I was out yesterday after what I hope is the last of the ice and snow and have a few pictures to post

This is cropped a little closer than I would have liked, but I wanted to clip out some branches on the right hand side. This was the only one of a bunch I took that came out as anyything I like. Trying to get a good exposure with bright snow and dark rocks is tough since there's such a wide range of light intensity. I like this shot since I think it contrasts the frozen ice and the running river.

I like pictures of spraying water with longer exposures. This one was about 1/13 second @ f20

I saw this chunk of ice and thought it made an interesting picture. This was shot at 1/30 sec@F11. The reduced size image posted here looks ok, but a full size image shows camera shake since I shot this with my 70-200MM zoom @ 200MM handheld. I should have used my tripiod

A wider angle than the last one. This one's at 1/30 second/F11 and 70MM. The camera shake isn't as obvious here, but I like the closer shot better.

Being from the land of swamp and rain, it is always fascinating to see melting snow. Thank you for posting.

I like #3. Be adventurous, take a 5sec exposure and see what happens. =] Have you tried using one of those bean-bag/tripod substitute things? Might be easier than using a tripod in a rocky or uneven place. You're so lucky you have snow where you are. Last Sunday I took boring pictures at the beach/pier. If only it would snow in socal.

I haven't used a bean bag. I do sometimes rest the camera against a tree trunk or on a rock. This time I was lazy and over-confident, and I wanted something with just a bit of a longer exposure.

This was a bright sunny day, so even at ISO 100, the longest exposure I could get was around .1 second without filters. I have a polarizer that I can also use as a neutral density filter and I used that to gain a couple stops for some pictures. 5 seconds would have been way over-exposed.

On cloudy days I have taken 1-2 second exposures and get a very smooth effect to the moving water.

I see. I know nothing about longer exposures in the daytime because I dont often shoot during the day. I'm used to taking extended (10+ sec. I'm not talking hours, here. I can't even afford a decent tripod much less the equipment -or knowledge- needed for a nightlong shot) exposures on a regular basis @ISO100 (Btw, Fuji Neopan 100 is awesome for this. great reciprocity characteristics). Excuse me for my ignorance . I am too tired to think.
