Well my 16.5 month old little girl is now to big for her crib. Not that she is too big for it, but her climbing skills have developed and I want to avoid a fall, as the crib is as high. So it's gotta go. I took her mattress out of the crib and stuck it on the floor will a think duvet under it. She slept there fine last night, but i was not sure about the next bed as it has to be so low incase she falls out.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this transfer to a big kid bed, She rolls to much to be on a bed that it too high, but big enough to climb out of a crib. I would like to build a cage but my wife is against that.
Just looking for stories. cheers.

When we transfered my son to a regular bed, we had him in a double, so that he had plenty of room to move around without falling out. He initally slept in his crib-bed, but it was too high. He never really had a problem with falling out though....it only happened a couple of times. He has no problems now though!

When I was a kid my parents bought me a twin bed and just made sure it was low to the ground, so if I did roll out, I wouldn't hurt myself.

You might also look for a bedframe that has side rails or an old bunkbed that could be cut apart.

You can get bed guards, did that with my kids. Their cribs 'converted' to toddler beds-just lowered them and put the sides all the way down as guards-then got bunkbeds and put guards on the lower bunk(top bunk was surrounded with a bar frame.)

I love the girls' toddler beds. They were a nice transition to twin beds. None of my children ever fell out of bed and they were all very wiggly.

My 18 month old just went from a crib to matress on floor to a todler bed (with a side board nesr the head of the bed), and she seems to do ok with the todler bed, even though most mornings I put her back in bed before I go to work, as she gets off the bed during the night She has never fallen out hard enough to wake up crying, so i don't know if she slides off or wakes a litlle then gets off, but she seems to be staying on more often now.

I just told my daughter there were crocodiles under the bed and if she fell out or tried to get out they would eat her...

She doesn't leave the bed.

(best to leave the room singing, "Never smile at a crocodile..."



(we used a rolled up towel under her sheets to create a lump that would prevent her from rolling out... but the rails that dawg suggests are good too)

After doing some shopping yesterday we decided to stay with just the mattress and the thick duvet surrounding it. The beds just all seemed too high as she is such a roller in her sleep. Will wait a couple months until she is a bit bigger to get an actually bed. Plus as night its quite funny to peek into her room and see where she ended up, she moves around so much in her sleep. thanks again everyone!!!

I just put my daughter's twin bed in the corner of the room against one wall. She couldn't roll off that in one direction. Then stuck the crib mattress on the floor next to her bed on the other side. It gave her a leg up to crawl up onto the bed and if she rolled off she was just fine. There were a number of times that I would come in in the morning and find her sound asleep on the crib mattress with her blanket.

My big problem was when my daughter switched to the big bed she started wandering outside EARLY in the morning. I got a lock that I installed at the top of our outside door where she couldn't reach. That got locked anytime I needed to know where she was and everynight before bedtime.

When I took apart my daughter's crib, I placed just the mattress on the floor as "practice" for a bed with an actual frame. For some reason, she refuses to sleep in it, choosing the floor instead. It is a perfectly fine mattress... I think she just likes to lay on the floor. Just a floor, pillow, and blanket suits her fine, but I think I should just go ahead and see if she'll sleep in a regular bed with a frame.

raeanna74 thanks, i never thought of putting the crib mattress beside the big kid bed as a pad. There were a couple beds we liked but were just too tall, with the mattress it should be much safer fall.

My son uses a Graco Cozy Bed model 8840WW (this is important because several other similarly named models were recalled), it's a plastic sided bed that uses a standard crib sized matress and sits very low to the ground. He's used it since he was about the same age as your child and he's now almost 5 and just about to outgrow it. These guys appear to have it for $69. It's basically indistructable and did a nice job of keeping him off the floor despite following in his dad's footsteps of being a heavy tosser in his sleep =)

Thanks robodog for listing that bed you had I have been looking all over for a bed that looked safe and was in a good price range. My son is 13 months old and is a dare devil already pretty big for his age about the size of a 2yr old. Once again thank you. Also is anyone else have problems with there infants bitting people? My son likes to bite peoples feet we can't get him to stop. Any sugestions?

originally with Amanda when she was about that age we took the side off the crib so she slept in like a 3 walled bed (with the mattress lowered as far as it would go) then we moved to a twin bed, I still had the guard rails my mom had used with me and my sister.

a friend of mine just put a mattress on the floor and went with that... basically it prevents any falling and gets them acclimated to a real bed when they decide to move him to one.

My parents put me on a bed with the sideguards to ensure I didn't fall out. Never had a problem, hope you found a nice bed!
