Panorama on the tweens
One for the Brits amongst us. Did anyone see the Panorama programme tonight and what thoughts did it prokoke ?
For the onon-brits, this was a programme about kids 8-12 (called "tweens" by the media) and how they respond to marketing, branding etc. I found it shocking that kids are so driven by branding and peer pressure, but more so that parents allow it to happen. I haven't kids myself yet but have always wanted them. However programmes like this make you wonder what world it is that we'd be bringing them into. |

I'm not a birt, but I can tell you living in America, the problem of kids just blindly following everything they see on media is alarming. Till now I haven't known any generation that are made to be drones, just following the latest fad and trend their 'pop idol' or hero has set.
The root of all this problem would be lack of parenting. Nowdays, here, parents just "don't have that kind of time." They give them TV, food and money for clothes and don't even know what their kids are upto and if they are getting enough learning and experience (that their parents can teach them). Whoops almost went on a rant there, but yea, its pretty much becoming a big problem. |

I have a "tween" - a 10 (nearly 11) year old girl. Of course she's influenced by what she sees and hears, and wants cool stuff that her mates have...what kid doesn't?
What I do as her mother is try and influence her decision making process with an element of sensibility and logic. Add to that the fact that I am the one holding the credit card and we have a fairly cluey young kid who doesn't tend to get carried away with the whole marketing thing too much. Works for us.
