Thought it would be good to find out what people are calling their kids in different locations/countries.

I'm in Australia and have two boys, Josh (9) and Seth (6 months). Seth was almost Kelly but the missus leant towards Seth [and I am but a mere mortal, no match for a woman with her mind set]

Expecting our first. apparently it's a girl and we've narrowed our choices to:

Katherine
Caroline
Elizabeth

Both my wife and I like English names and like names that are A) of a definite gender (so no names like Terry or Kim that could be either male or female) and B) names that can be shortened (IE if it's Katehrine she'll be Katie probably)

Interesting, highthief, because my wife and I are very much against nicknames. We feel that if you, for example, want to call your daughter Katie, you should just name her Katie. Why bother with Katherine if that name will only be used on formal documents and the like? (Of course you should do what YOU want, because the worst thing to do is base your decision about YOUR kid's name on what anyone but you and your S.O. want).

My wife and I like names that are unique. This doesn't mean weird spellings of common names (like Genipher or Rebekah). We both are first generation Americans, so our heritage is important to us. Our daughter has a Dutch name, as my father is from Holland. My wife's family if from Cuba and Colombia, so perhaps we'll go with a hispanic name for our second child.

my son's name is Andrew (Drew for short)- it means Manly (boy, that's true) and also inspired by comic Drew Carrey (only a little, though), his middle name is Fox (inspired by the character Fox Mulder on the older XFiles show)

Josh's daughter's name is Eva (from Neon Genesis Evangelion) and her middle name is Illyana (I think her mom and Josh just chose that because it's a beautiful, unique name)

If I were to have another child, it being a girl, it would be Julia Rain or Julia Star

have a 11 week old baby girl named Liley. wife was leaning towards emma but the baby off friends is named emma i think so she thought many kids would have that name. Liley has no family history meaning just a name my wife liked since she was a little girl. was born just before easter so fits too with easter. my little easter liley.:) i too like you have no powers against the woman and her god given right to name our daughter. i think its in the constitution or something lol. i get to the name the boy if we have one...or so i was told....

My daughter is Katherine Abigail (Abbey)

My son is Noah Alexander (Noah)

I agree, Joshua is a wonderful name read some where that it's regarded in some circles as Jesus' true name (not that had any bearing on the decision).

Strangely I've also read somewhere that SETH is the name of the devil (not sure where I read this), so my children are (if my memory serves me correctly) christ and the devil !!!

I'm open to stand corrected so if I'm wrong let me know . .

First child:
Maya Raven

Named after a skilled poet, and civil rights leader
Middle name is her totem animal (inspired thru meditation)

Second child:
Sagan Dreigh

Named after an inspired scientist (before his death)
Middle name translates to Dragon (totem animal)

Third child:
Anya Wren

Named after the Russian Princess (Anastasia)
Middle name is totem animal

We didn't even realize the double A's until afterwards.

In Quebec they have a rule about naming children - if you try and call your kid "Toaster" or "Saddam Hussein" they will not allow you to print that on a birth certificate. I tend to agree with that thinking, obviously you can call your kid what you want within your home, but the government won't let you call your kid Stalin on paper.

That is basically the reason. I think Katie sounds great, but with Katherine as a full name, she has options, especially if she becomes a professional where a formal name like Katherine can sound better than a short version like Katie or Kat.

Right, that's fine. At least you are planning on Katie. It's worse when you name them Katherine, call them Katherine, but other people (primarily teachers) take it upon themselves to nickname her Kate or Katie.

For example my wife's brother is named Matthew and goes by Matthew. No one calls him Matt. Oh, except all his teachers who won't call him Matthew despite numerous requests from his parents. How disrespectful is that?

Her Daddy gave her first, and I named her the second. It was a joint effort. ;)

My son's name is Travis. We just like the name. His middle name is Gregory, which is my first name, my dads middle name and my grandmother's (dad's mom) maiden name. I doubt he'll name a son Gregory, but we'll see.

My daughters name is Michaela. Pronounced Mic-kay-la. Half the people who see her name can't pronounce it without help. I believe it's the "proper/Old English" spelling of the name. We actually got the idea of the name from the TV show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. The family calls her Mic or even Mickey, but she is know to all her friends, teachers, and coaches as Michaela.

I would think (from the spelling) that it would be pronounced Mik-ky-AY-la, mostly because the "ae" combo is often pronounced as two separate sounds (in Spanish, for example).

I have the same issue with my daughter though. People will mispronounce her name for her whole life.

Laura Elizabeth.

I wanted Sarah Elizabeth as that was the name of my great grandmother from Alsace-Lorraine, France. I wanted that name since I was a teenager.

Strangely enough that was hubby's sister's EXACT name and he vetoed having another one in the family. In his words "One is bad enough."

Now he has a favorite Aunt who's name is Laura and so we altered the name to fit. It's still a family based name and it's common enough that people shouldn't have trouble spelling it. I wanted something not too extravegant or unusual for my daughter.

It's actually the feminine version of Michael. I think its Hebrew for "In the likeness of our Lord" or something like that. We picked the name before we found the meaning.

My father wanted to name me Hezikiah Zachariah Herkamer(don't know spelling). Of course, my mother told him to piss off, and I ended up Adam.

Well growing up with this common of a name, I wanted my child to have a unique one. A name that was actually somewhat unique to her to spare the confusion of total normality. :)

Carisma Jewel is what we named her. Notice the lack of "h" in Carisma. I decided it's a name, it can be fanetic(sp lol). I'm not a fan of names with confusing spellings just to look cool or names intended for use of a nickname.

Unfortunately, my wife and I realized we may have cursed her by giving her a pseudo-stripper stage name. Oops! :)

loved reading the kids names! I have 3 kids and my first we named
MALACHI we chose the name out of the bible, but poor kid is 8 and has had trouble from the day he was born. He has NO idea what Children of the Corn is but when we lived in an apt complex next to a cornfield and some kids couldn't play with him when the corn got high he was CRUSHED. I felt terrible :-(

I also have an Isaiah and a Victoria who goes by Tori. so i'm sure the name calling will only get worse. but NOTHING could top the cornfield story so needless to say we moved FAR away from the cornfields and hopefully that'll help a little!

I have one boy. Bryan Nathanael.
I don't have a problem with nicknames. In my experience it makes things a tad bit more interesting. I figure this way my son has several names he can be called: bryan, ryan, nate, nathan, nathanael.
We picked Bryan since it was a nice non biblical name. Nathanael is biblical but I used it as a tribute to my dead brother Nathanael.

You can thank Stephen King for ruining most old testament bible names with that story...

I want to name my daughter (if I have one) Lucy Brennan- Lucy after my grandfather Louis, and Brennan after my mother Brenda.

I never liked having the exact same name as tons of other people in my family, so I like to give them a little twist.

I also like Lolamae (or Lola Mae) and Lyla Dawn for girls.

I haven't thought about boys, but if I have one of those, I am sure I will come up with something.

Our choice for a girl was Gillian Marie or Jillian Marie. We never solved the G or J spelling disagreement before we found out our child was going to be male.

We actually changed the name of our son a day or so before he was born.

We finally picked Travis for his name, but we had told most of our family and friends that we were going to name the baby Matthew if it was going to be a boy.

We received several congratulations cards sent to us for our new son "Matthew" :)

I chose to name my two girls after the matriarchs of my combined family.

My eldest is Callie Anne - first name is her great great grandmother's name, middle name is both my mother's and my ex-husband's mother's middle name.

My baby girl is Margaret Rae (Maggie for short) - first name after her paternal great grandmother, middle name is my aunt's middle name.

Unfortunately - they're nicknamed "monster & maggot"

My daughter's name is Xyla Blue. She gets mistaken for Lyla a lot though.

I have Eli and Aidan
We didn't name either until 2-3 weeks after they were born (much to the chagrin of the hospitals). We just had to meet them and get to know them before we named them!

My wife is due in a couple of days with a girl. We still haven't decided. We're considering Haley Elizabeth. She wants Elizabeth for her middle name. The problem is my last name has 11 letters.

Heres one for you, our youngest son is BECKETT. Some call him that, others call him Beck. His mother named him after Thomas Beckett, the english author that lived and wrote in Paris. He loves his name, the whole family loves it, his friends love it; it was a good choice. He always said when he was walking down the hall, and the principal shouted BECKETT, he had no doubt who was in trouble!

Daughter #1: Emily Marie
My wife got to pick the name and chose "Emily" because of some song of the same name and "Marie" because it's her middle name and she always liked it. If she was going to be a he, then he'd be named after me "Thomas Henry".

Daughter #2 (one month away): Claire Elizabeth
Again my wife's choice, and another excellent one. After we found out we'd be having another girl she asked me what I thought of it and it was just perfect. No reason to waste time thinking of others.

On a side note, we haven't told anyone Claire's name yet, we want it to be a surprise. My parents have been bugging the living hell out of us to use their names, but if we did that then we'd have to have at least one more child to satisfy my wife's side of the family. I'm sure they'll get over it.

Daughter #1: Ariel Elisabeth - she liked Ariel only to find out that the Little Mermaid came out around the same time, so its 'just like the Little Mermaid' to everyone... Elisabeth (yes with an s) is a spin off my wife's middle name Elise

Daughter #2: Avery Kaitlin - my wife says she chose Avery, but I still think I found it first. :-) I like Avery because it is cute as a little kid name and can be a sophisticated adult name...of either gender...but more common in girls now (side note, Avery was the ex-girl friend of Jerry MacGuire in the movie of the same name)...name means 'ruler of the elves'...cool, and kinda funny because she's the sweetest little girl.

Son #1: Aiden Christopher - again a name that is cute for a little boy and can be a professional adult name too, and again, either boy or girl. Aiden means fiery and is Celtic in origin. Many people spell it with an 'an' at the end. Christopher is tied to my name.

Hold the phone... isn't that sort of what nicknaming is all about? The names that other people call you? Granted, unwanted nicknames are tragic, but people have to understand the propensity for people to shorten names and call people their own special names. If it's that big a deal and your child doesn't like it, s/he can exert some control over it, i.e. "It's Katherine" in response to "Hey Kat!"

We have an 8 month boy: Giovanni Anthony. Giovanni is my bf's favorite boy name. Anthony after one of our best friends and also my grandfather. For short, we call him Gio. If we have a girl, my bf wants to name her Aria.

#1 Monique Rachelle - I was about 13 when I heard that name and fell in love with it. Rachelle came afterwards and is french in origin, my family is 'French Canadian'. My middle name is Chantelle, so I went with that 'theme' of it. Hubby had no choice in the matter whatsoever!! ;)

#2 Crystal Rose - This name was chosen my hubby from a list of names I put together one day with my aunt. I really wanted to use DeAvea Lynn, but hubby refused...said if I used that name he wouldn't sign the birth certificate (which legally he didn't have to ;) ) and so her name is now Crystal.

If we have a boy, it will be Paul Elmer III (the third), of which I have no choice. I am afraid that if he gets to name the first two out of three, I will have another one just to get equal naming rights...(that was a joke!! ;))

My other favorites which hubby says might be alright, should we have another girl, besides of course DeAvea Lynn, seeing as I've had to save that one for a future pet is seems:

A male cousin of mine is called Gabrielle, i always thought it was a slightly strange/girlish name, although named after arch angel Gabrielle. I put it down to my wierd thinking but apparently someone agrees with me, when you hear Gabrielle whats your immediate reaction? just curious.

I don't have children yet, ideally i'd like 5 but that's not going to happen. Regardless here are my top 5 names for boys and girls.
