The parental fuck-up thread

When did you totally blow it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didn't get my son circumcised. I figured there was no need.
At age 3, it became obvious that things just weren't right down there. Sure enough, the doctors confirmed a circumcision was "medically necessary." It's a one in a million thing.
So my kid had to endure a surgery and a painful recovery. He kept asking me if it would "hurt forever."
UG!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My son was a little intimidated by our dog. She is all heart, and no brain. I kept telling him that she wouldn't hurt him and that she would like it if he pet her.

He finally got the courage to toddle over to her. And just as he started to pet her, the doorbell rang.

My dog thinks the doorbell is some sort of alarm. When it goes off, she must immediately begin barking and charge to the door, or we will all be killed.

She tried to run around my kid. She really did, but he zigged when he should have zagged, and the dog got faked out did a little stutter step and pretty much fell on him, barking the whole time.

My kid FREAKED. I felt like an ass.

I don't believe in blowing it as a parent, if you are trying to be the best you can.
We can however make not so wise choices, but it happens.
Nothing to hold on to.
It's never your fault- no one's. You didn't know that either thing would happen. Don't be hard on yourself.

You didn't blow it on this one. Odds were likely that it was the right decision.

Defecation occurs. It's not your fault.

If you don't believe me, go watch the procedure being performed on a newborn. It's one of the most brutal things I've ever seen.

Agreed, loping off a chunk of my son was not an option for me. We did much research into the pros and cons and found virtually no medically sound pros. Just seemed like a cruel thing to do to somneone you love so much(or anyone for that matter).

I didn't have my son circumcised either. Do you know when the foreskin needs to retract? My son is almost 6 and his hasn't. The doctors said it should happen by 6 and if it doesn't then I should have them do surgery. Should I wait for a problem, like is it obvious when the surgery becomes medically necessary?

when the boy is in the tub.......get him to pull back the foreskin himself.

not yank on it hard,but you know roll it between his fingers and pull it back and forth.

not like a man would play w/ himself but gentle.

he'll figure out what to do.

lil boys can't stop touching themselves anyways.

just keep on top of it and it should go well.

With regards to circumcision, as with many parenting decisions (family bed, diapers, feeding, etc.), there is often no absolutely "right" answer.

We all do the best we can.

After talking to multiple docs - kid docs, penis docs, regular ol' docs... I learned that the skin might not retract until a boy is in his teens.

Do with that informaton as you will. I am not qualified to dispense medical advice.

My son is 9 now and his still hasn't retracted... Having been circumsized I had no idea what to expect.

I went to see a urologist about this a couple of years ago and he said that it was fairly normal that it wouldn't retract until they hit puberty and it begins to get bigger...

On the flip side, my wife and I decided to go ahead and get my son circumsized and we wish we hadn't. The doctor did a horrible job. Now my poor little guy is 10 and asking why his pecker looks different. I wish I had left it the way nature intended!

to be honest my parents never "blew it" but they have made some bad decisions. Can't blame them for it, they're human like the rest of us. I haven't always had this mindset though, my parents have made quite a few mistakes and I used to feel that they were quite significant and those were what "blew it" for them. But then a take a look at myself, I don't do drugs, I'm 19 years old and I refuse to drink, even with their mistakes they have raised a decent human life......me... And I love both my parents for it...
