The Words of George Carlin! A philosophy on life.
 

I think we could all learn a little from this large quote from the comedian:

"The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

The last line is the key to a full and happy life, I hope this post has taken your breath away.:D

George Carlin... As in Shiny Time station?

This is why I like Mr. Carlin. Not for his fart and shit jokes, but for the stuff he says to make a point... stuff like this, because I dare anyone to tell me he's wrong about anything he's saying in boyfriend's post... think about it people... he's right, and it's kind of sad.

Don't forget to live a little.

He really is the Will Rogers of our time. Humor mixed with just so much common sense that it forces you to take notice of him.

His bit on everything being anti-bacterial today and the kids are sicker than ever is hilarious and true. He says that when he was a kid he swam in the East River and had to push the fecal matter out of the way to swim. His immune system could kill anything after a childhood like that.

Nice post. The art of observation is a vital part of comedy and he make several interesting ones. I myself sometimes wonder where all this progress has really gotten us as a species. Clearly we live longer and know more by the time we die that people did before agriculture was discovered. I wonder if we are any happier as a species.

There is actually an interesting history behind this essay, the most prominent feature being that Carlin had nothing to do with it, as it turns out. It was written by Bob Moorehead, a pastor of Overlake Christian Church, which makes sense in retrospect, as it is filled with societal value assessments. This is also ironic, because Mr. Moorhead has an unfortunate moral history of his own, as is detailed in the link above.

Here is Carlin's response to being pinned as the author: "One of the more embarrassing items making the internet/e-mail rounds is a sappy load of shit called "The Paradox of Our Time." The main problem I have with it is that as true as some of the expressed sentiments may be, who really gives a shit? Certainly not me."

I think the difference here is the intended audience. I would likely be asleep by the time a preacher finished his sermon. But as I have far more respect for Carlin, I would be enthraled. Hows that for a reality check.

Being human does not always mean you get to take up lots of resources in your pursuit of being happy. Greedy and materialistic people are the number one social disease and before humans take their place in the greatness of this Universe they will need to come to terms with the limited resources available to their race as a whole. All others present the worst danger to the group.

This is a great post! Helps to put some things into perspective (for the time being). I think we all need a little reminder that people were able to live and ENJOY life before we had the gratuitous ultra-modern luxuries that we have now.

Not that you can't enjoy them and life at the same time, but we need to remember to take some time out to smell the roses and realize that it's NOT all about the rat race.

Also.. It doesn't sound like Carlin.. He makes jokes about hookers, gangbangers, and that psycho guy fucking someone with a dildo while wearing a pink bunny suit. ;)

Carlin, I feel, would say it more like this:
"I mean have you looked at the prices for a good hooker these days? They're outragous.. and then once you get 'em, you wonder where all that money goes, because it definately not going to their appetites..."

Thats more of the flavor Carlin has. My wording might be a little off, but I am no comedian and that would be what we call a "rough draft"

I guess my post would fall into the funny category. lol I guess it has been a while since I've actually heard Carlin's stuff. The last time I saw him, I remember thinking that some of his insights were not only funny, but true. I guess I thought maybe he decided to get a little deeper....guess I was wrong. Jokes on me! haha

i could see carlin doing a bit like that, but it would not be as long. Also, while i was reading it, i was thinking, "There will be a post down below from scopes saying he didn't write this" bc it really is too mushy for carlin. I will agree, though, that his comedy is very vulgar until he just hits you with an insightful rant that makes you take notice. Taht's one of my favorite things about him..

george carlin is a great man

This is great and I have heard Carlin live discussing a few of the points in a little more serious way. Guess I'll be like a christion and make a few things up - like thinking this is from Carlin - so it fits my perspective.

Anywho, I have it pinned in our kitchen at work because it has such a universal message, good for christians and the rest of us alike!

One other thing.... it reminds me of a Dave Matthews song.... think about it.
