If Jesus came back, would he claim to be christian?
Lets face it, The current social face of christianity is less than christlike, Do you think "the man" would want to have anything to do with the likes of Pat Robertson or Jerry Fall-Well?
|
i think he'd have some strong words. the man never shied from a conflict with people who used religious authority to harm. but considering his treatment of oppressors who reformed (centurians, tax collectors, etc...) they would not be written off permanently either...
|
Go to a used book store and pick up a copy of "Joshua".
I personally think it's a pretty accurate portrayal of just what might happen if He came back. But to answer your question, no he wouldn't, IMHO. |
For me it doesn't matter, for being within the spirit, I know as long as I do my best and live well, I will be OK when the time comes.
|
Shee-it, last time his dad came back, he changed his name.
Would Jesus be a Christian? Damn straight, He'd be a Christian! However, there are some folks calling themselves Christians these days that he'd give the moneychanger treatment to. I could really go for a live, onair flogging of Pat Robertson, and I think Jesus would agree with me. I also think that those folks weaving around with the "In case of Rapture, this car will be unmanned" bumper stickers would be deeply disappointed. Seriously, though (the above was half joking), i8one2 seems to have the right answer, and that's all I have to say about tha-ut. |
Sorry enough, a modern day Jesus would probably be locked up if he said he was Jesus. So somewhere out there he wanders, helping society. Sadly enough, no matter how much help occurs, we still just kill everything together as a global society... the earth, each other, animals, might as well have a giant nuclear holocaust or something.

I such a figure as Jesus did once exist, he'll be more like a very Orthodox Jew if he lived today. The guy probably just wanted a little less corruption on the temple mount. Or, possibly he viewed himself as a Messiah - but he would still be a far cry from a modern or medieval Christian.
|
I always thought it would be a funny movie idea if jesus really did come back and spent his time locked away in various mental institutions while trying to convince people.

I was raised in a strict pentecostal home (i.e. forced to attend chuch until i was around 16-17ish, did time in a xtian school, youth group, yada yada yada), was indoctrinated and brainwashed to the whole concept of the "second comming" of christ, the end times, anti-christ and the whole good v. evil and good winning out and we all lived happily ever-after scenario.
But honestly, if any of you have spent any amount of time around fundamentalist xtians or have a backround, you will know that not one group or denomination is able to agree on any aspects of the bible, especially pretaining to any aspects of this. For example, if you are "pre-trib" (pre-tribulation) this means that if you are a christian, you will be raptured up before the anti-christ, people forced to take the mark, etc etc. If you are "post-trib", this means that even if you are a christian, you will have to endure the tribluation and this is when you faith will be tested, either to take the mark, and be damned for all eternity, or refuse the mark and live in glory. I have witnessed churches "split" over this dogma. I could (and maybe should) start a thread regarding the structure and process of the hows, whys, and therefores of the belief systems of "born-again christians", but then again, those would just be the observations and ramblings of one person. Anyhoe, guess what i am leading up to is that even if christ did return, i'm not sure how many christians would actually accept this, since he might not fit into their doctrine, or go along with some obscure verse out of the bible. I'm telling you, folks, there would be huge fight in the christian community if christ were to return, as they say he would. because he didn fit their mold, or a time frame that some whack job said he is supposed to come. To quote, he would probably just say "Screw you guys, I'm going home!" I'm going to hell for that :-P |
I know this isn't completely true to the heart of the argument, but he wouldn't have a choice whether or not to be a Christian. He portrayed himself as the Christ, the word means those who follow/emulate Christ. Either the word would have to change meaning, or he would have to return as something other than Christ.

Jesus was a jew, as far as Christianity goes, he only laid the foundation and put things into motion. Historically speaking all early Christians were jews and weren't called "Christians" til several hundred years after Christ.
Anywho who knows how he would identify. |
If he believed in himself, he'd be a Christian, yes?

"If Jesus came back today and saw what people were doing in his name, he wouldn't stop throwing up."
/Woody Allen |
For some reason, i have a pic n my head of Jesus decending to earth as mentioned in the bible and him saying "Smile, your on candid camera!" or "HEEEERRRREEEES JOHNNY!"

Who would get the interview, Larry King or O'Reilly?, if he went on Larry King then we would know he was still Jewish.
|
Jesus is a Jew....like Mojo said he only laid the foundation for Christianity. Christianity is for gentiles (everyone else who isnt a jew) to come to know Him.
|
I think if he were to come back, he wouldn't care about a label. He would simply be among us -- teaching, praying, helping, curing, being. And who's to say he hasn't come back?
|
Just another small question. If the Christian religion is based on Christ as the savior, then him claiming to be christian would be bowing to himself? Wouldn't that be a sin, infact breaking one of the ten comandments, because Christ was jewish was he not? think about it.
|
it's funny, because they teach little Muslim kids that Jesus will eventually return as a Muslim.
|
No, Jesus was Jewish.

Since being a Christian by default is following the teachings of Christ, he would be a Christian unless he were a hypocrite.

I dunno if he'd be christian, but i definitely think he'd be a packers fan. I mean c'mon, they're destined!!!

Well, considering the fact that christian means christlike, I don't think he could really get around it.
However, he certainly wouldn't proclaim to be the wierd version of christianity that we see today. During his lifetime he was a jew, and I imagine that he would still consider himself one. After all, if he was the son of god, he was probably able to pick the correct religion back then, why would that have changed? |
I don't think Jesus would be any Christian faith that is currently out there, but he would be Christian. His arrival would probably bring about a new form of Christianity that removes all of the dogma and traditions and beliefs that people have invented in his name, it would be the REAL way Christianity was supposed to be.
