Does Anyone Else Build Lego Robots?
My son and I have begun building robots with the Lego Mindstorms kit we bought him for Christmas. Before I go off on a rant I'd like to know if anyone else here builds them. He is a 9-year old and is homeschooled atm. I highly recommend the kit to anyone who likes Legos or programming. The IDE is a very visual "Drag 'n Drop" affair that makes programming fun, although Java, C#, and other languages can be loaded with a firmware flash. Very Cool IMHO.

I don't currently build Lego Robots, but I have in the past. At the computer camp I worked at, we used them to get the younger students interested in programming/robotics. I found that it really did the trick. Kids (and adults) can play with lego and learn simple programming all at the same time. But don't let the legos fool you, some of those robots are really, really hard to build! :)

I haven't played with mine for a while now, but it's really cool. I can't rememer the name, but i "converted" to a C++ like language when I was bored with the drag-n-drop interface. It's a great way to learn programming (And plenty of fun for dads to :))

I had one with my ex husband. It was pretty awesome. That was a few years ago. I'm sure when little man's older he'll be introduced to them by his dad. :)

I recently bought and put together the Batman Batmobile lego set. It was regularly $70, but it was on clearance and an "open item" at Wal-Mart for $20. I picked it up, intending on returning it if some of the parts were missing, but when I opened it up at home, all of the blocks were still in the bags, and nothing was missing. Took about 7 hours to put together.
http://assets.lego.com/upload/conten...BC255A79E7.jpg Has all these moving gears and shit on the inside. The steering wheel makes the hood pop open, to reveal turbines that spin when the wheels roll. You can see the turbine's gears and shafts and stuff in the car. The rear wheels are a cluster-fuck of gears as well, that make the back turbines turn (and make fire twirl around like a jet engine). This thing is fucking awesome! I'm 23. |
I've built my fair share, and I tutored a beginning electronics class that built 12 models, including their final model, which was used in a competition at the end of the semester.
Their programs were actually very well written for a class who had never seen a programming language. I strongly recommend NQC over the drag-and-drop bits, it is quite easy. |
My son and I have not built the robots togther but we have load of Legos, I have wanted to get the computer for the 249.00 but its just kind of a stretch. Its very hard to find any used because i think like the legos themselves the computers are loved by whoever buys them and nobody ever wants to get rid of them.
Hopefully someday.. My son and I have not built the robots togther but we have load of Legos, I have wanted to get the computer for the 249.00 but its just kind of a stretch.
