Possessed?

My friend (Jen) was telling me about her younger sister the other day. She (and her family) think that her sister is possessed. I don't think that's quite it, well, let me tell you about her. When she was young, maybe a year, her mother used to lock the door to her room with one of those old sliding bolt things so she wouldn't get out and fall downstairs. The lock was pretty close to the top, so a child her age would have no way of getting it, plus it was on the outside. During the night her mother woke up with a strange feeling I guess and went out into the hall just in time to catch the little girl from falling down the stairs. Supposedly the door was wide open, and she was standing at the top of the stairs looking down and holding her arms out to something at the bottom.

That was the first incident as far as I know. Now she's 8 I think,(not 100% on that detail) and her family is afraid of her. During the night sometimes she will sit up and talk to someone, or just smile at the wall, but she will still be dead asleep, although her eyes will be open. Jen says it gives her a very creepy feeling, and they way her face looks, her expression and everything makes her look like a totally different person, her eyes even seem to change color!

Once she was clawing at a second story window screaming, "I'm coming! I'll be right there!" She almost broke the window and would have been seriously hurt. The strange thing is, you can't wake her up during one of these "episodes", you just have to let it pass.

One of the latest happenings was where she just got up out of bed and said something to the effect of, "Oh, you mother's dead? That's too bad. What happened to you?" She then got up and started walking around the room, "showing" it to someone. She'd point to her bed and say "this is my bed, this is my cat," and whatnot. She then said, "No, my cat's nice, she doesn'y bite, not like yours."

It sounds to me like she can communicate with spirits while she is asleep or someting. Supposedly people have died in that house, and they have seen strange things, like soda cans sliding acrossed the table and things flying off the wall. They aren't scared, because it has never been harmful and think it is a grandfather or relatives I think. Any comments or similar stories?

Have they ever taken her to a doctor? She could have an illness. That sounds very much like a possibility, you know?

I say tell her to suggest having her brain checked by a doctor. An EEG while she is sleeping sounds like it would help to see what's going on. Maybe take her out of the environment that she's in and see if there are the same results.

Just some thoughts.

If there's any kind of supernatural beings in that house, they are very unlikely to be related to her, unless they died in that house or spent a serious amount of time in it. Dead people get attached to places, not other people, 99.9% of the time.

She almost fell down the stairs and almost broke through a second-story window, and things are flying around the house--I'm sorry, but if that family isn't a little scared, they're not very smart people.

She either has a mental illness, or there are some entities in the home who don't care at all about her physical well-being, depending on where your beliefs stand.

Either way, I would take her to a shrink, and if she comes out with the clean bill of health, move the hell away from that place.

Yeah I'm with Johnny, if they were just "ghosts" they wouldn't be luring her around or hucking shit across the room... Poltergists on the other hand do that, and to me knowledge they is not the most friendly types of spirits out there. Maybe the girl has some insane 6th sense, but usually those are manifested in the awake stage.

I don't want to come off as a religious nut or anything, but has the family considered having a priest come out to the house or to see the daughter??? Exorcism used to be widely practiced in the church and it isn't solely limited to possesions. It definently sounds like there is some spiritual force there, luckily nothing bad has happened yet.

Re:

Well, things don't really get "hucked acrossed the room".
What that had to do with is Jen's mother was hanging christmas decorations up efore thanksgiving, and she was telling her mother to take the wreath off the door. Then it flew off and landed on the table. Jen goes, "See, grandpa doesn't like it either." And the can was over a long period. The things like that don't scare them but they are really freaked out by the girl. I'll pass on the info next time I see her.

Kids are very good at picking up vibes, if the mum and sister are neurotic and are constantly heaping attention on the poor kid then it's quite likely that the girl is projecting these anxieties from her relatives... Maybe they should back off, sounds like they're being overprotective. Bar that, she could have some sort of mental illness, or just have a really strange sleepwalking problem. I hope that they aren't treating her any differently because of her apparent "possession" because I'm sure that'd just make things worse...

Hiding Out

That's kinda freaky...but maybe she's just disturbed mentally. She just craves attention or soemthing...but the thing when she was little and opened the door is a bit tougher to explain. I do subscribe to ghosts and other-wordly existance whole heartedly but I always would go for a natural cause, maybe she has some sort of advanced psycho-kenisis that only is controllable when she's sleeping?

Okay, list of things I'd do if it were my sis, one, get her to a head doc, if that shows nothing wrong get her examined by a medical professional while she sleeps, if that shows nothing erratic research my home's history for any gruesome murders or past paranormal abnormalities. If that shows something I would call in some sort of psychic (sp?) to examine your home for restless spirits and find hot spots in your house and to commicate with spirits to see if they are angry or friendly. If all of these things turn up negative she's just a very strange and clever/ attention starved child who needs some loving, if several of these turn up green I'd get an excorcism performed on the child and leave the house just for good posterity.

But, that's just me...

There are a few Catholic priests out there that can evaluate the girl and possibly offer some advice. Kind of a strange story...

Seriously if there is all of this crazy phenomenon get a priest in there, this really sounds outta the realm of psycho-kenises or over protective attention, especially if the rest of the family sees weird shit going on.

That's weird as hell, man. Not necessarily because of the content, but because the exact same thing has happened to someone I know -- my sister.

I can't give too many examples, but the main one correlates exactly to what you're saying. One night in my old house, my sister was asleep. It was about 9:00 PM and I was playing PS1 in my room (this was about 6 years ago). My room and my sister's room are both on the 2nd story of my old house. My sister got out of her bed and walked into my room WITH HER EYES CLOSED, got on top of my bed, and started looking out the window at the cul de sac (sp). Her eyes were closed the entire time, by the way. It was like something else was using her body to look at something. She kept saying "It's coming, there it is" over and over again, "looking" out the window with her eyes closed.

I shook her, and it had no effect. She then got off of my bed, walked into the hall, and opened her eyes looking at me. They were a tint of red (I shit you not)...not the kind that's from sleepiness, but they were actually tinted red purely. She went back into her room and back asleep. In the morning, I told her about it, and she remembered NOTHING about it. Not even about waking up or anything. She jumped on my bed and opened the fucking blinds to look out my window with her eyes closed and she didn't remember it!

Just thought I'd share my similar experiences.

PS: She hasn't did anything like this since that one time.

possession and poltergeist activity are actually rumored to be the affect of pent-up emotions (generally anger and sexual fustration), but in a child of 8 or whatever, i can't see why that would apply.
if it has something to do with the house itself, then the child must have a specific link with the "being" that is communicating with her (by specific i mean age or something).

i had the same sort of thing for a while, it's not so bad now. I had a lot of pent-up anger, so my "spirit" friend was just a manifestation of that anger. It used to rip things off the walls, break glasses and stuff, and it pushed my little brother down the hall. It used to "love" me though. If I was sad, it would sit beside me. It was like an invisible sibling or something.

If you believe in psychic phenomena, then the case your friends sister could just be mental powers and/or emotions just releasing itself. And because of the age, and that it's been happening for a while, it might be coupled with an overactive imagination that can't express itself in an artform of some sort yet.
I don't recommend the priest though... it doesn't sound serious enough for that. Just try to encourage some sort of artistic expression. If it gets worse, maybe then call a priest. Or, i've been told there are some psychic investigators around, you could try that...
