The Lovemakers

Shesus and I went to see Veruca Salt at the Metro last night. We got there a little after the opening acts started because we have found that opening acts are usually hit or miss.

Anyways, the band playing when we got there was The Lovemakers. They're out of Oakland and they blew us away with their live show.

They have a definite 80s New Wave sound and would fit in perfectly with a catalogue that included bands like Information Society, Human League, etc. After the show, we decided to pick up their CD and have listened to it at least 5 times today. It's catchy as hell. It's one of those albums that grows on you quickly and you can't get it out of your head.

Has anyone else heard them? What are your opinions if you have?

You can sample some of their stuff on their website here.

What's even better is that they'll be back in town in one month playing with She Wants Revenge, another band I'm becoming excited about.

Music is not dead. There is some really good new music out there.

The first sample seems broken, but I'm trying the other RealAudio samples now. Not bad, certainly sounds like it might have been on the radio 20 years ago. It isn't grabbing me, though; I guess it just isn't the subgenre that I listened to back then.

How was Veruca Salt?

Veruca Salt was good. Shesus was not as happy as me as she really wished Nina Gordon was still there, but I was very pleased with the show.

They started a little rocky, but they soon gained their momentum and the rest of the show was very energetic and the mood on stage was very light and fun which made the show that much better.

I've seen them live twice. I only found out about them because I happened to be in Rasputin Records here in Berkeley when they had an instore appearance. I mostly listen to metal and electronic dance music, so it makes sense that I'd like them being kind of in the middle dance rock, though I don't typically go to live shows of such. Then I went to see them play a proper show in San Francisco some days later. It was frankly a little depressing because every guy was there with his hot girlfriend. Not a single in sight.. But sure, the music was still good. I might go to their next one here, which is probably part of a tour including the one you're talking about. November 22 at The Fillmore (a pretty nice venue I might add) FYI anyone around here.

Because of this post, I may buy a CD for the first time in over two years. Thanks, JJ
