I like country music and love bluegrass music. Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs are my favorites, closely followed by Bill Monroe.

Edit to add: I rarely drink, and when I do it's usually at home. I like to sit down with a frosty mug of Penn Dark (a German lager made in Pittsburgh) and listen to Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers (Irish folk music) and bluegrass. I always start with the Irish drinking songs though.

Yup, I like most country music (not the older honky-tonky stuff though). I like bluegrass when it is played live. It is not a genre I can just sit and listen to, it grates on my nerves a bit. The country right now played on the radio is "pop" but I can sing along to it and that is my test to good music.

I grew up on country. The first record I ever listened to was John Denver's Back Home Again...
The last concert I went to was to see Merle Haggard.
I'm currently learning how to play guitar, and the first song I'm learning is The Pilgrim Chapter 33 by Kris Kristofferson.

Yeah, I guess you could say I like country.

But OLD country. Classic stuff. Conway Twitty is my hero.

I love country music! Geroge Strait is the best. But I also like Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, and some of the newer artists like Dierks Bently and Rascal Flatts.

Stuff along the lines of Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams (Sr.)...yes.

Wilco, Uncle Tupelo...hell yes.

Nickel Creek...yes.

Shania Twain, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban...NO. Worst subgenre ever.

The only country music I like is Johnny Cash. I've been playing The Man Comes Around almost nonstop for a while now. I've downloaded a few of his other songs (don't narc on me). But for the most part I can' stand the country music that is played on CMT or the radio. Most is too "pop" like Colonel Special pointed out.

I'm not sure if it counts, but I'm addicted to Sheryl Crow, I kinda class her as Country. Although I am a little partial to a bit of Dolly Parton every now and again.

I like some country and bluegrass (I'm not sure why people call it country) music (I'll give anything a chance). Just like any genre though, there's a lot of crap. My favorites are Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, Johnny Cash, Big & Rich, Tim McGraw, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Hank Williams.

I really like Lyle Lovett. I appreciate Bluegrass well played, whether Flatt and Scruggs, Jerry Garcia, 'Ol 97s, or Hayseed Dixie. I like some old Johnny Cash, but not all of it.

Count me in, too. I like Yonder Mountain String Band and Nickel Creek the best, but I enjoy most of the genres.

Sheryl Crow... not country.
Shania Twain...not country, anymore.
Ditto for Faith Hill, Big and Rich, and anyone who collaborates with Nelly.

Well, after reading through everyone's posts, I'm going to take the opportunity to pimp for some friends of mine. The Wilders are an old time country band from Kansas City and possibly the best live act I've ever seen. Not only are they friends, but personal musical heros. I've never been a huge fan of country (Hank, Johnny, Pasty, etc. was about all I'd listen to), but they just play too goddamn well to ignore.

Check them out please. I'm certain you won't regret it. In fact, if you do, drop me a line and I'll apologize personally.

It's ok katie...I like some of it too (just some though, hehe)

I grew up on bluegrass AND country. I love John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Kate Wolf, Patsy Cline, Garth Brooks, The Judds, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, well..the list goes on and on. I'm liking less and less of what I hear on current country stations, though.

If you like Bluegrass, check out Split Lip Rayfield. It's a Wichita, Kansas quartet of guitar, banjo, mandolin and gas-tank bass (homemade standup bass made from a pickup trucks gas tank, just one string...) They play pretty fast, and the lyrics are mostly funny, but they certainly have the sound you're looking for.

I can't believe nobody mentioned good 'ol Willie Nelson! I personally met him in the lower lobby of terminal C of Bush Intercontientla airport in Houston, and he is just as down to earth in person as he seems on stage.

Like Katie_Ann I too like new country, but a lot of it does sound alike. One of my fav newer singers is Joe Nichols. His song "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" is not only funny, but its a really good song...give it a listen!

I borrowed a Tim McGraw CD (Everywhere) a few weeks ago, it's still my favourite out of the country stuff I've listened to. (Alan Jackson and uh... Alan Jackson.) I'll probably go check out some more once I get some free time.

I love country because of there lyrics have a pretty good meaning most of the time if not all. I was raised by Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and all those guys. My wife loves the old Faith Hill, and listens to Lonestar's Amazed every time I deploy, or leave for extended periods of time.
