"The" or not "The".
Here's something that really pisses me off about mainstream-ed-ness.
They are called "Gorillaz", not "The Gorillaz". Once one ignorant Disc Jockey calls them "The Gorillaz", they're now officially "The Gorillaz" to anybody who listens to the station. What's worse is when you're talking about Gorillaz, and some ignoramus mainstream-er corrects you and says "NO, you dumbass, they're called 'The Gorillaz'." It's like, dude, I've been listening to them for 4 or 5 years. I know what they're fucking called, and it's not "The Gorillaz". And what about you TFPers? How have these mainstream-ers been fucking up the names of your favorite bands? |
The "The" gets me so mad! Definitely just Gorillaz. I heard someone mention "The Nine Inch Nails Band" the last time I turned on the radio. My iPod (affectionately known as "nOodle") have gotten very close due to the idiocy of Northeastern Florida radio personalities. :D

I really like Beatles.

My peeve is when they start giving some lead singers headlining credit, such as Jim Morrison & The Doors. The band's name was The Doors, end of discussion.
I realize there are legimate frontman/band name combos, such as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but quit doing it to bands that never intended it. |
I actually just read an article about this kind of garbage today. It talked about how the new "in thing" for bands was to have a name with "the" in it. According to the article, bands names that use numbers are inferior.... my response : who cares? If you like the music, get over it. Who cares what the band is called? The name should only matter when youre looking them up or trying to buy one of their cds.

I remember Smashing Pumpkins having the same debate... it isn't THE Smashing Pumpkins... it's just Smashing Pumpkins...
one is passive the other is active... |

Also i can understand an overuse/addition of "The" - it normally helps identify what you're "specficially" talking about. Although this is unfarily taken out of context, if i was to say "I like Gorillaz" and "I like The Gorillaz", you can more easily identify with the latter, as when you put "The" in front of the name/term it looses it's generality ie talking about ape-like creatures :p However counterpoint again, if someone purports the name to be something it isn't, in a (formal) debate of such about the bands correct name, then this fretting would justified; albeit if some yahoo DJ says "The" in front of the name, you need not be too fussed with it. Just play the music... if it's good :p |
Not a mainstream band here in the states, but Doves probably get a "the" tacked on in England all the time.
|
Same thing with Deftones. I don't know anyone who calls them just Deftones, they're always called The Deftones. I would think if that were their name it'd be printed that way on the albums.
Whatever either way... |
I hate when a band uses lowercase letters to start their name and get all pissed when somebody puts a capital letter in the front.

The Children of Bodom

It's similar with Pixies. A lot of people tend to say The Pixies.
