Nickel Creek
Never been a fan of Blue Grass in general but then I accidentally bought their Why Should the Fire Die Album and I fell in love with their 1st song "When in Rome"
I mean, they do really well for a blue grass group and their sound seems pretty original to me. Just wondered if anyone else was a fan and if their were groups or other CDs that were as good. |
I discovered them earlier this year, and I really enjoy their music, as well. They were just on Austin City Limits this last saturday, too. That was nifty.

Their mandolin player was a child prodigy and regarded as one of the best ever.
|
well, i really like both their previous albums...but i do like bluegrass, a lot. the first is quite old school, and has at least a couple straight instrumental tracks. the second has more pop influence...a little more accessable to a non-country fan.
|
I really like all I've heard off the first two albums, plan on getting both then most likely going for the newest one. Someone made me a modern country mix, and "This Side" by Nickel Creek was the only song on it that I thought was more than 'okay'; I loved it. That album is heading to me through the mail right now.

I have their self titled and it's pretty decent.

They are a good tight band and the more you listen to Nickel Creek, the more you'll like them. "This Side" is a great CD IMHO. They played at KaBoom for KFOG in downtown San Franscisco last year on the wharf and were good live, too. Looked like they enjoyed every minute there which was fun to see. Since they're relatively youngins' you can bet we'll hear a lot more good stuff from them...
If you don't like Jazzy Bluegrass, then go listen to the punksters down the street... |

Yeah I love them. I got into bluegrass from XM, and I have loved it ever since. Jerry Garcia has a good bluegrass album with David Grisman that's really nice. Nickel Creek defiantly will be the next bluegrass album I am buying. They were awesome on Austin City Limits.

Yeah, good call on these guys (and girl). I just heard them today on World Cafe and was really impressed. I plan on picking up their new disc soon.
|
I recently purchased their self titled CD and I really like it. From the samples I heard from amazon of Chris Thile i'm going to check out his solo album as well as it looks promising!
|
Nickel Creek is probably my favorite performing group right now. The self title album is pretty easy to listen to. The second album This Side, is much more progressive. The new album is a nice mix. They have a rare combination of great instrumentals, vocals and good song writing ability. They are pretty nice in person as well. If you check out their website, the fans section, they have links to some live stuff (sessions at AOL, and NPR). Check it out if you're a fan.

I have a couple of their CDs, and Deceiver by Chris Thile.
Favorite tunes: Speak, from the self titled CD.... and Empire Falls from Thile's Deceiver. I don't know if I'd classify them as bluegrass... more like AAA or Americana. |
Another bluegrass bitch here, and yes - Nickel Creek is a fantastic group. I would put Chris Thiele up with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, David Grier type players.

I wasn't really impressed with them. There are a couple of songs I like though.
They kind of remind me of Goose Creek Symphony, but GCS is better. |

"Green and Gray" is good. I need the solid beat of "Speak" though. G&G is more like traditional Americana. "Young" is also another good song from that CD. Chris Thile was dating a 16 year old girl when he was 19. He wrote another song about that on "Deceiver" about how the girl's father was thought he was such a nice boy and how guilty he felt for thinking dirty thoughts and kissing his daughter. "The Wrong Idea". They're married now. I talked to him about 7 months ago, he came across as a goofy, shy kid. I wanted to say, "DON'T get married. You're going to be hit on more an entire town of guys. Girls will want to do anything with you." |
