Pink Floyd reuniting for Live 8

Waters, Gilmour, Wright and Mason together again.

Pink Floyd reuniting for Live 8
Concert marks first public performance since 1981

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Four members of seminal British rock band Pink Floyd will play together for the first time in 24 years at London's Live 8 charity concert for Africa on July 2, publicists for the event said on Sunday.

Guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and keyboard player Richard Wright will be on stage with bassist Roger Waters for their first public performance since they played at London's Earls Court in 1981.

The rock legends will join a star-studded line-up including Coldplay, Elton John and Paul McCartney at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, organized by activist rocker Bob Geldof to pressure rich nations to ease African poverty.

"Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," said Gilmour.

"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention then it's got to be worthwhile."

The band released their first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in 1967 and broke records with 1973's "The Dark Side Of The Moon", which remained in the American album charts for more than a decade.

In the 1980s relations between Waters and the rest of the group soured, with Waters suing over the rights to the Pink Floyd name.

Gilmore, Mason and Wright continued to record and tour as Pink Floyd, releasing their last studio album "The Division Bell" in 1994.

i think the live aid shows will be televised...at least they were last time. maybe it's a PPV deal. but the shows are free if you can get tickets.

also bob geldof, the organizer, starred in the movie version of the wall

and it seems like dark side was on the charts (billboard 200) for more than a decade

I strongly suspect that the BBC will be carrying the audio element on Radio1.

If that is the case, they have a policy of everything broadcast on BBC radio nationally here beign available to listen to online for one week afterwards. In fact I seem to remember that copyright issues prevented a number of US orchestras appearing in last years Proms classical concerts, because individual players insisted on repeat fees!

Either way, if you go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 and follow the links to "listen again" you should find it.

The UK concert is definitely the best.

Besides Pink Floyd, there will be Elton John, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Muse, Coldplay, REM, U2, Sting, Joss Stone, Velvet Revolver, The Cure....

I haven't been able to track down any PPV info yet. I know it's being broadcast on both BBC Radio and TV, but what good does that do us over here?

I hate to say it, folks, but I wouldn't get my expectations too high for the show.

This won't be a Floyd show in the true sense - I doubt there will be lots of visuals or flying pigs (with or without a penis - Floyd trivia freaks get this reference). I imagine it will be just the band getting out there, playing a 45 minute set or so with a bunch of hits, and then never to be seen again.

Also, note that they will not have had much time to practice, so it will be pretty much by the numbers.

Totally guessed partial set list:

Another Brick in the Wall (We don't need no education)
Money
Wish You Were Here
Comfortably Numb (b/c Gilmour will insist)
One of these Days (b/c Roger will want a bass moment and it's a crowd pleaser)

Also possible:
Have a Cigar and/or Welcome to the Machine
Pigs on the Wing
(something else from Dark Side, but who knows what?)
Pigs, Dogs or Sheep (from Animals) (My guess is "Pigs" b/c Roger will want to sing the "Hey you, white house, haha... charade you are" line)
(something else from the Wall, but which?)

Slightly possible
The Tide Is Turning (Roger solo stuff, so a touchy point, but an awfully good song, and very appropriate to the event)
Something from the early material - Set the Controls, perhaps?
one of those new, awful Roger songs about Iraq

Never gonna happen:
Anything from Final Cut
Anything from The Division Bell (well, maybe that one that rips off "Wish You Were Here" and has the "he told to please go fuck myself" line, b/c Roger and Dave might think that was funny)
Anything from A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Oh yeah. Forgot about that one. Big crowd pleaser.

I suppose the scientific way to predict would be to look at RW's most recent set lists, compare with PF's "most recent" set lists (from how many years ago, now??) and see what they've both been playing from the old material.

Any TFP'er have that kind of time?

I, for one, would love to see them do Echoes, but I don't think either has been playing it recently, and it's not really a festival crowd song.

I forecast Floyd doing 2-3 songs (at most 4), and Waters walking offstage. I seriously doubt they will sound good as they will have had little practice together.

Who knows tho, maybe backstage Gilmour,Wright and Mason will work things out with Roger and this'll be the beginning of them reforming for 1 last tour and the MILLIONS they can make.

As for the concert itself, it's good in theory I just hope it comes off and works as weell as it can. You're talking about a lot of HUGE egos and I remember reading Live Aid was pure Hell backstage.

If you haven't seen it, go get the "David Gilmour Live" DVD that came out a couple of years ago. It's amazing. He plays Shine on You Crazy Diamond solo with just an acoustic guitar. Only other instrument is Dick Parry on Sax for part V. Then they do a full band version of parts VI-IX later in the show.

Plus he does a lot of covers, including a few Syd Barrett tunes, an aria from Georges Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers" and more. One new song as well.

It's just fantastic. Even has Bob Geldof doing a guest vocal on "Comfortably Numb" and a song from Richard Wright's latest album.

Everyone has a price, regardless of what Waters says. Plus, if they recieve a huge reception and get up and emotions get the best of them .... never know they may hug onstage and talk about a reunion.

Hell, Van Halen took Sammy back and they took DLR back.... albeit for a very very short time.

I've always thought that Gilmour was extremely underated as a guitar player. Primarily because he wasn't cranking out hard rock and that Pink Floyd was considered very poorly by many.

I still have vinyl Dark Side and Ummagumma somewhere, so the old pot smoker in me really wants this shit to happen, and continue to happen for a few years.

I doubt if their relationship could withstand time in a studio to do a new CD but that would just be outstanding if they did. Hell, I'd have to go out and buy a bong if they did. And if they do, anyone know where I can score some dope?

Cosign on what the flyman says. Derwood is right. I'm going to be getting this DVD myself first chance I get as it has David doing "A Great Day For Freedom" which is one of my absolute favorite guitar solo's from him, on top of it being a beautiful song.

I also want to get The Delicate Sound Of Thunder video because that has "On The Turning Away" which is my second favorite guitar solo I've heard from Dave so far next to of course Comfortably Numb. So many things to get.

Fuck I wish I had a million dollars right now.

I'm banking on PPV, because I think a DVD would probably show 1 or 2 songs from each artist instead of the complete sets.

Well you may have superior trivia knowledge to me, but my understanding was that David added a penis (with balls) to distinguish from the Animals pig....
