Review: Series, Hella, Out Hud @ The Grog Shop last night
Those of you from the Cleveland area probably know of The Grog Shop, which is an excellent venue for all manner of music. Last night I went to see Out Hud with Hella and my friend's band Series opening up, and the show was completely fuckin great.
Series opened with their Guided By Voices-esque, swaggering indie rock. The music was good. The lead singer Sam sounded awesome, but their female vocalist was kind of a let-down. Very nervous girl, didn't really get into the music. Next up was Hella, and these fuckin guys blew me away. They assaulted the audience with a raw blend of hardcore math rock and indie dance synths, and it was absolultely incredible. Think Dillinger Escape Plan with a synthesizer and a more minimalist vocalist. I highly recommend their music to anyone that digs noise rock and hardcore. Their musicianship was unrivaled, easily some of the best, most precise guitar and drum-playing I've experienced. Finally, with my eardrums near bleeding, Out Hud came out and instantly got the crowd moving. The band was so into the music that not one person in the crowd could resist dancing. Out Hud is a hard band to categorize, with it's three of its five members trading guitar, keyboard (3 types), cello and percussion duties, two female vocalists and a bass player and a drum machine genius. I simply recommend that everyone check them out, particulary their first album S.T.R.E.E.T.D.A.D. |

Cool review. I just picked up Out Hud's most recent album. Not sure if I like it yet - gotta give it more listens - but it's very groovy.

ahh..very cool - never knew there's a fellow TFPer from the cleve area
I've only been to the grog shop once, before they moved - saw orange island, a static lullaby, and brand new. Got the tix for free from a radio contest on WRUW - I was the first to name and call in the doogie howser theme song.

Well, Keyshawn, if you're not busy on the 29th of April, you should definitely go to the Grog and check out Brothers Past. They're an amazing electronic rock group. Think Radiohead with some Amon Tobin/DJ Shadow style beats and sampling. My friend Jeff's band, Dirty Television is opening up for them and it's gonna be a blast.
