Tilted Midi

There has been some demand for a single place to share creation and inspiration with fellow members. As of now.....there is no devoted hosting for this exchange of Ideas.....thus you all need to be creative.

Here is the place to show off what you can do.....what you have found....and what you hope others can teach you. Everything in here is owned by someone....keep that in mind , and have fun.

MIDI has been widely used for almost 30 years now. It stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It's not just cheesy songs for your computer. It enables your MIDI-capable devices to be interconnected.

Keyboards, effect boxes, light systems, digital recorders (and some analog recorders) to name a few devices.

It is almost ubiquitous in recording and composition. I couldn't imagine composing without it -- call me lazy.

Okay, you're lazy...

Having composed short pieces both with and without MIDI, I'll agree with you though. Makes me respect traditional composers a lot more when I think about it...

Heh... Imagine Bach or Beethoven or Wagner using MIDI.

i wasnt bashing midi... it just seems that with mp3s out, theres no reason to still record or listen to lower quality songs... with no voice too....

I don't think that's the point of this thread. I'm not sure, but I think that it's supposed to be a place for collaborating with other forum members who write music.

You should read this page:

I realize that you are not bashing MIDI. But I want to make sure that you understand that it's more than just "lower quality songs." In fact, I would say that MIDI can be much, much higher quality than MP3.

If you're used to hearing it using a soundcard's MIDI engine then you are correct ... but if you have a MIDI rig with at least one professional keyboard then you'll be amazed. Add several pro keyboards and modules together and it could blow you away.

That being said, MIDI is NOT a replacement for musicianship though.

MP3's are all well and good, but if you have a composing program like Sibelius, Finale, Cakewalk...all you need is to find a midi of your favorite piece or song and instantly you've got tabs, or a score, or parts, if that's what you're looking for. There are even free programs that let you do that. Without midi, it would take hours picking away with a CD to figure out a part, and that's hardly even possible with orchestral music. I also compose with midi, and it saves me so much time, especially since I challenge any non-pianist to pick out 4 or 8 moving parts on a piano at one time.
