On this date in 1983, Karen Carpenter died of complications from severe anorexia nervosa. I've heard from more than one Vietnam Vet who said they hate all that Oliver Stone bullshit about listening to The Doors and Jimi Hendrix while on patrol. They said the music that really tore up everybody's hearts and made them long for home was The Carpenters. I believe that.

Also on this date in 1987, pianist Liberace dead of AIDS in Palm Springs. No matter what you think, this guy could play a mean piano. Old film clips from his TV show are awesome.

The Carpenters were a huge part of my formative years. I will always be grateful for having had the opportunity to see them in concert. There is really something magical about her voice....
