this sucks...im pissed
 

i was just thinking...one of my favorite songs of all time is "On Fire" by switchfoot...and no matter what you think of the band, i urge you to download it.

That being said, now that they are really popular and played on pop stations all day long, eventually they will probably put this out as a single (best song on the CD by miles, in my opinion), and teeny-bopper girls will be walking around singing it all day, etc, and it will KILL me!

now i know, who cares who else likes it or not, if you like it, more power to you. I couldnt agree more. So i cant describe why i feel that way, but i do! Has this happened to any of you? A song you liked immensely before it became popular, but once it did, even though you still liked it, you were kinda mad that so many other people liked it without giving it the same appreciation you did?

I don't listen to the radio at all, so it surprises me to find out certain bands I've been listening to for a while have become popular. Case in point: Muse.

My friend's friend is very into music and recommends him things to listen to all the time. My friend then passes this information on to me. He came to visit me this summer and we were sitting there listening to Franz Ferdinand when he tells me his friend has recommended this great band from Britain called Muse, and I should really check them out. I give him this funny look, turn to my stacks of CDs and fish out "Absolution." "You mean these guys?" "Yeah. How'd you get that? It just came out." "It's been out since March. I got it on spring break in Seattle." "No way. You've been listening to Muse all this time and you didn't tell me?"

Oh, and Modest Mouse is a prime example of this--they've been immensely popular with the college crowd in Oregon and Washington for a long freakin' time. They played at a big concert I went to in December and I had to cut out early--all of the teeny boppers wearing Modest Mouse t-shirts were driving me insane. Ugggh.

I agree completely. My group of friends and I listened to modest mouse all the time for quite a while. I think we saw a commercial for a van or something that had their music in the background and my buddy just looks at me and goes, "uh-oh..."

I personally don't care if they are played a bunch as long as the music keeps whatever had me into it to begin with. I do agree that it really can ruin the concert experience when it becomes a big teeny bopper fest.

Oh yeah, and Switchfoot is great. I had 'The Legend of Chin' album forever....then one day they were all over the place...

heh I helped out isaac brock with some computer stuff at least a year ago... I had no idea who he was but I had to ask when I saw one entire room of his house devoted to guiters stacked at least two deep. now of course modest mouse is everywhere... :D

The latest modest mouse was made to hit it big. Its like a best of early 90's alternative put out by one band. There's a pixies song, a Tom Waits song, a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, and a few others I can't remember at the moment. It's still a good disc.

I like it when underground bands I like make it big. Happened with Muse, happening with the Shins, happened (kinda) with Ben Gibbard. Crossing my fingers that it'll happen with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.

I don't mind too much if an underground band suddenly become popular; i think it's actually quite good in some instances because then more people will know the band and i wont be such a musical recluse :p

What i don't like is when people try to hold some kind of higher ground on you because they liked or heard of a band before you did.


an example:

Person1: *excited tone* "Hey, i got this new cd by *band here* and it's great"

Person2: *patronising tone* "ohhhh, i have been listening to that for agggesss"

Generally though, if anyone only listens to something cause it's on the radio, i doubt it'd have the same longevity for them, compared to if they discovered the bands themselves on their own terms?

I don't want this to turn into an advertisement, but I've had XM radio for awhile now and I'm often discovering new songs or groups that turn out to be popular later on. It's a great source for finding new stuff that commercial radio takes forever to wise up to.

Are they popular because they play on commercial radio or do they play on commercial radio because they are popular?

I didn't read the whole thread, but I read the first post, and I just want to say this. People that whine about other people liking their bands piss me off. Honestly, what is so bad about it? The fact that they made it big and people are singing their songs? That must be it.

Well I'll start and sign a petition that will make it so they can only play certain songs once a month so that people don't hear about them or start to like them. I'm sure that will ensure that they keep making music!

Why are you upset about a band you like making money? Think about it from their point of view... they probably dont like you, and they probably dont like the mallrats either, but if the CD is getting paid for, i doubt they care who by.
To some other cats:
Muse started playing what they needed to play to get on the radio, so it was obviously their decision. Completely different sound after the first release.
Modest Mouse have been commercially successful for their last three albums, just because they werent on MTV does not mean that millions of people (even dumb people) were listening to them. They were selling out concert halls in the late 90s.

Well I like Switchfoot, but not On Fire. I don't really feel mad about it when stuff I listen to suddenly appears on the radio alot, but I really get pissed with EVERYONE begins singing it. I like a song then people all around me are draining the goodness out of it by their neverending butchery of it. I can't even listen to I believe in a Thing called Love by the Darkness anymore because people never stopped for an entire year at my school. Or anything by Jet gets on my nerves now because peope sing it so often.
