This is my first post im from Peru and my english is not good. A couple of things : Slayer (Thrash metal) WAS a great band, his last album "God hate us all" = NO METAL Mudvayne System of a Down = Rapcore In flames are masters of the genre, really good death metal, listen Colony and Jester Race. Groups like Linkin Park, Chimaeira, they are not metal. They are called usually NEW METAL which is a really stupid definition they have nothing to do with really metal. Other thing more : Opeth sucks???? They are masters of Progressive Death metal, u really dont like them??? |

Most of you guys dont listen to a lot of metal, recommending hardcore or (insert genre)core to a guy that already listens to it its not going to help. I would suggest you start listening to death metal. Bands like DEATH, AMON AMARTH, ARSIS would be a good start, then you can listen to DISSECTION, THE CHASM, SPAWN OF POSSESION and much more. I see you listen to SLAYER, its a good band to start, but dont think they are the gods of metal, many thrash bands are way better than slayer even in their better days. Try getting material from TESTAMENT, OVERKILL, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, EXHORDER and of course DEKAPITATOR. I would not recommend you to listen to black metal, due to its "raw" production and "un-technical" sound. PM ME if you need some more band information or help with anything related to metal. EDIT: And whoever posted his WINAMP or whatever program list. That's a horrible list, don't try to show off with your not so underground bands. Last edited by mofeta; 12-11-2004 at 06:06 PM.. |

hmmm Try Opeth and The Gathering. If you buy The Gathering - Mandylion, you'll never want to buy another prog rock cd. Its simply the best.

stop plz.
Opeth is a great band but its not the best (never say that a band is the best say that is what u most like) and is not prog rock. Is prog death metal and one of the bests. Black label is a good band i dont like their style but i respect it. Im seeing Slipknot with Iron Maiden??? What is this??? it says METAL recomendations, Slipknot its not metal. If u dont feel ready to hear death or black metal begin with classics, Iron Maiden, Metallica (1981-1989), Old Sepultura, Slayer, Venom, Dio, Accept, Judas Priest. Heavy Metal is the law. |

Phantom lord, I think you are being a little too strict on your definition of "Metal".
I will take all of your suggestions, as for who to check out, but cmon man. God Hates us All is most definatly metal. I see "old" heavy metal as hardly metal at all. Ive heard In Flames Colony, and Whoracle, and they are great. They are in no way masters. In fact, I prefer to hear Slayer over them. Not really a Nu-Metal fan, but I would still classify a lot of it as metal. Just cuz you dont like it, and you are a metal fan, does not equate with it being "NOT METAL". That said, thanks for the suggestions. |

ok here's how I see it.
Whether it's Goth Metal or Black Metal or Thrash Metal or any thing that is known to have metal behind it is all Metal to insult one is to insult part of the genre as a whole. I don't like all of the stuff but let's face it metal is metal. To say bands like Slipknot and Chimaira aren't metal then what are they? They definately aren't rock. |

If you like the thrash style of Slayer, check out old Sepultura, like "Arise" and "Beneath the Remains." I would venture to say that it is even better than Slayer's "Reign in Blood." Of course that is just my opinion.
That is another thing. There are a lot of "elitists" in the metal community who will look down on you because of bands you listen to. Forget them, and just listen to what you like. More bands to check out (as if you don't have enough already).... Arch Enemy Nevermore Solefald Iced Earth Graveworm hmm, I think most have been said, but whatever. |

burzum is the only purveyor of metal variants that interests me these days.
i have a sentimental attachment to the form, but find myself having to be talked into checking out newer stuff. thanks to the good dr bindujeet, my itunes was invaded...i am not at all sure that the reasons i like burzum's stuff have to do with what you normally listen for when you listen to metal, but then again, i do nto really care about that.

I know that RIAA lawsuits have peed on everybody's pant legs, but does anyone know of metal VIDEOS? I saw a couple In Flames vids, and I thought they were good stuff. It was off the album before "soundtrack fo your escape."
Thanks to everyone for all the input, I'm picking up on some new bands I hadn't heard of before. |

Some great suggestions here. I'm pissed someone beat me to Probot.
Question: how many of you really dig the "cookie monster" vocals that are on so many metal tracks these days? It seems to me like a cop out, like "hey I can't sing but I can sound like cookie monster so I'll do that." I really like metal singers who can actually sing. That's why I'm interested in: Strapping Young Lad (their drummer is insane. and fat.) Shadows Fall (yes I know they scream, but they also sing, and the singing isn't of the cookie monster variety) Killswitch Engage (I like Howard better than Jamie, and again they do scream but also sing) In Flames (because that guy can scream in tune) Sevendust (cuz they're from Atlanta and they rock) Mudvayne (because they have silly bass work and truly interesting song structure. I agree that LD 50 is their best so far) Tool (duh) And the new Megadeth is absolutely excellent. I think they are one of the all time greats. Dave Mustaine is a vastly underrated songwriter, and will likely be remembered at least in metal circles as one of a very few true pioneers in thrash metal. And for those who get hung up on genres: I think we all know that if it feels like metal and it rocks balls then who the fuck cares what some record store dork classifies it as? Hell, I saw Godsmack open for Metallica a month or so ago and enjoyed it. I saw Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit blow UP a crowd (along with Deftones, Mudvayne, and Metallica) at Turner Field in Atlanta a coupla summers ago. Sure they don't have the greatest reputation or integrity in the biz, but if it jams then who gives a shit? |

I dont know exactly what you're looking for, the question is a little broad. I'm a grind man myself. I'm blown away nobody has yet recomended Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Stoaked that someone dropped some other Scott Hull with the Pig Destroyer Reference. Both of them would be good to pick up, on Agoraphobic's "Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope" they drop 2000 BPMs on their drum machine.
some more favorites(that i dont belive i saw listed): Circle of Dead Children The Red Chord (some of the best guitar work in metal today) Isis Dying Fetus (this one may have been mentioned, i cant remember) |

It's a good idea to find out how hardcore you like it.
So get some Severe Torture. I'm not that hardcore, so some of this stuff I list may be edging away from metal in any number of directions. List of things unmentioned, genres are my own opinion: Workhorse Movement: Stoner Metal Mad Trucker Gone Mad: Redneck Metal Lollipop Lust Kill: They call themselves 'murder metal', I think that's pretty accurate. Vaux: A friend of mine calls this 'yelling metal' Therion: Orchestral metal. I'm told their older stuff is straight death metal, I haven't heard any though White Lion: Hair metal. Vomitron: They're just... wierd. I got their stuff off MP3.com before it sucked, so they may be hard to find now Violent Work of Art: More yelling metal Union Underground: I'd call it nu metal. You should get all the stuff that people say sucks too, form your own opinions Stahlhammer Grindstone Shuvel: rap metal Raised Fist: I think they're technically punk, sounds like metal to me though. Pressure 4-5 Pain Gamma Ray Godhead Hallow: They like to pretend they Mr. Bungle: Very wierd stuff, probably not metal Kill II This Hopesfall: Melodic metal. Death metal singing with mellow music. Edguy: Power Metal, I don't think anybody's mentioned any of that yet. I love Edguy, they're the best. Helloween Dog Day Sunrise Hammerfall Death by Stereo Sentenced: New stuff is 'suicide metal', old stuff is death metal Bohse Onkelz Big Dumb Face Andrew WK If you liked White Zombie, try Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000 (Rob's little brother's band), and Scum of the Earth (various people from both bands). See if you can find any metal mags, very helpfull in finding new stuff. BW+BK is pretty good, but skews a little hardcore for me. |

I personally enjoy every single album they've put out and understand that St. Anger has some of the heaviest songs they've ever played live (i've seen them a few times live since the release of the cd, and before) The CD itself is horrid by most Metallica standards, but then again, when have they done things as expected?

This is a fucking awesome thread!!!
Some bands with new albums out (easier to find that way): Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer (insane!) Mastodon - Leviathan (is there ANYONE who can say ANYTHING bad about this fucking band?!) Red Harvest - Internal Punishment Programs (industrial-ish stuff) The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine (great, great album, a lot different from their previous ones) Vader - The Beast (old school DM) Hypnosis - CyberDeath (along the lines of Red Harvest and Sigh) Amon Amarth - Fate of the Norns (excellent brutal viking DM) Ayreon - The Human Equation (probably never heard of these guys but they are an incredible prog band, concept album and everything. On vocals: Devin Townsend, James LaBrie, Mikael Akerfeldt...tons of other guys. brilliant album) Dark Tranquility - Character (if you have their last album it's pretty much more of that sound, which means it's awesome) Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh (best DM album of the year bar-none! Fucking Tagtgren, Blakkheim, Swano, Renske, and Axenrot!) Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (most underrated album of 2004 IMO) Suffocation - Souls to Deny (it's Suffocation, with a new album...do I need to say anything else?) Borknagar - Epic (great prog release) My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light (doomy metal at it's fucking finest!) Decapitated - The Negation (DM from probably the youngest guys in the genre...tons of energy!) Meshuggah - I (only an EP but completely mind blowing from masters of syncopated heaviness) Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn (can't deny these guys are still some of DM's best) Those are all the new relases I could think of, other great bands to check out that other folks might not have mentioned: Blood Red Throne Torture Squad Ulver Diabolical Masquerade Cephalic Carnage Dimmu Borgir (GET Death Cult Armageddon) Naglfar Nile Hate Eternal Death If I was back at college I could go through my playlist and pick out more, but these are all right out of my travel CD case. |\m/| ( - - ) |\m/| Edit: Quote:

while I wouldn't call them metal, I also wouldn't call them "EMO" if they're emo then metallica's latest efforts are emo too...Metallica is farther from metal than My Chemical Romance as of late.

Eh... while Metallica has fallen from what they used to be, St. Anger is still "metal".
If anyone else wants to challenge this, download a few MCR songs and see what I mean. They're as "metal" as "Blink 182".. and we all know that isn't what's being sought after here [edit] Sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing anyone's tastes. I just think they're... kind of outta place in this thread
