i'm a massive fan. There message board has been down for a while so i'd thought i'd chat up in hear about them. See if you guys and gals are fellow Jammers. I met Mike McCready in Melbourne last year and talked to him for 15mins. That was cool. Had front row seats for the 1st Melb show in 03 and got one of Stone's pics. Best Concert experience of my life. Tell me some of your PJ concert stories if you any ? |

I was a HUGE Pearl Jam fan through High School. Hence the first half of my handle. I've seen them live several times, including some acoustic shows and when they played with the Rolling Stones. As a teen, I could really relate to the music and it helped me through some hard times. I've been playing music since I was a kid and they had a big influence on my playing style. I love Stone's riff's and writing style, even the "Brad" stuff he did. The band as a whole has always had amazing presence and chemistry.
Over the years I have lost my passion for the band as my taste has changed. I would still go to a concert if they come around again. After the first 3 or 4 albums, I started to lose a little interest because they just got a little weird. I still bought all of them but I have to say that my favorite all time album has got to be "Ten" to this day. Records just don't get better than that. I guess you were looking for a concert story: I saw Peal Jam in SF at Golden Gate Park. I went alone so I could go wherever I wanted and I made it up to the very front. I couldn't have been closer. I was crushed up against the railing but I hung in there just to be that close. Before I knew it, a huge mosh pit opened up right behind me and I was sucked in. I was pretty scrawny at the time so I was tossed around like a ragdoll. I somehow ended up crowd surfing and ended up about 10 yards back from where I was I eventually made it back up to the front but it was quite a struggle. One of the best concerts I've ever been to.

Huge PJ fan, I have only seen them 3 times Chicago 95 / Detroit 2000 / DC 2002, that Chicago show was the best though. It's amazing how many live CD's I have. I love how they continue to evolve and create. This is one of the greatest bands in Rock n Roll and I don't think they recieve the credit they deserve!

Ten has to be one of the best Albums of the 1990's. Great record, I love how they stayed true to their music and sort of fell to the back of the landscape but held onto their true fans!
I haven't heard anything recently by them sadly. But I guess if you listen to maybe half the rock bands out today you can hear cheap rip offs of Perl Jam's early 90's stuff |

i used to be a pretty massive fan but my passion has somewhat died for them. This is probably due to me not liking binaural or riotact especially. I love VS though. Incredibly album. really feel like playing it now actually.
unfrotunately threy arent big in england and so tour here pretty infrequently (last time was in 2000) so i've not seen them live. |

Whoot! PJ Rules. One of my favorite bands.
I just saw them a couple of weeks ago on the Vote for Change tour. The show was in Ashville, NC at the Civic Center, this tiny little venue of about 6500. Killer show, killer sound. They only played one set, but it had a short acoustic portion in the middle which was very cool. Sorry I don't have the set list. I am hoping it becomes available for DL soon, but the site doesn't look like it's been updates since 2002, so I don't have much hope there. The funny thing about the show I saw was the very special guest star that showed up unannounced. The actor Tim Robbins showed up with his band to open the evening with a short set. He then came back out and sang a song with Eddie and the boys at the end of their set. Good time for all, and they had lots of activity at the voter registration booth. I think the whole thing was very sucsessful. I think it's excellent the way PJ has evolved. As they mature and change, so does the music. I'm not a huge fan of Riot Act, but I think everything up through Yield is really top notch music. Even Riot Act has some good tunes on it, and the B-Side "Down" is an great song. I think Eddie gets a little full of himself sometimes, but I'm sure that just comes with being so popular. Some of his stuff actually reminds me of late Jim Morrison stuff. Poetryesque spoken words over music. It's creative to say the least, just not quite my cup of tea... heh heh... Glorified G just came up on the media player (in random) *sings* I've got a gun... fact I've got two... That's okay man, cause I love God! Excellent man, just excellent.

Love Pearl Jam! Saw them in MSG during the Riot Act tour, both nights. Definitely one of the best concert experiences of my life! I think their latest albums have been their best. Yield is amazing, so is Riot Act, listened to it this morning, as well as No Code and Binaural. I also love the fact that they are a politically motivated band as well, speaking out when others are afraid to...and sticking to their word by avoiding hypocritical actions, i.e. music videos, cooperating with large corporations, etc.
A friend of mine once said they are this generation's "Doors". i think that might be a pretty good comparison, though I think Pearl jam's music is more relevant and creative than the Doors, but I am definitely biased.

I don't really mean that. The Doors are okay. Pearl Jam has produced a lot of lethargic-sounding filler. Vedder's vocals seem to be the band's greatest asset and weakness alternatively. But I think if you were to take their seven studio albums and condense them down to five, you'd have five albums of four or five-star quality. And No Code and Ten might already qualify for 4-4 1/2. They're a solid band. But not quite as good as the Stone Temple Pilots.

PJ are one of my favorite bands of all time and as far as modern bands go they are my favorite hands down. I've never been to any of their concerts before because lets just say I'm not one of those lucky kids who actually gets to go to concerts. I don't think Ten is merely one of the best albums of the 90's though. I think it is one of the single best albums ever made. It's actually a perfect album. Every single song on the album is fuckin great. So far I don't have all the albums...I wish I did. I don't have that much cash so I can usually only afford em if their new or as Christmas gifts n shit. I have Ten, No Code, Riot Act, and Lost Dogs. And unlike most people I actually think Riot Act is a great fuckin album. Very Pearl Jam material too. I don't know why people shit all over it so much. Love Boat Captain, Thumbing My Way, I Am Mine, You Are, 1/2 full, etc. I mean the album has plenty of good songs on it. Thumbing My Way is one of the best they've ever done. They're still just as relevant as they always were. I don't think Vedder is the ONLY think they have going for them Stone and Mike are both very talented musicians...Stone makes great riffs and Mike is one of the best guitar players in the world right now. Matt is a good bassist too. PJ rock my world haha. They showed one of their concerts in NY Live at the Garden I think on cable not too long ago and Eddie had this bright ass spotlight on him and he picked up a big ass mirror and put it over his head and reflected the light into the crowd and put the spotlight on all of them. That was awesome. I wish I coulda been there for that.

"This generation's Doors"???? Please! Setting aside any comparisons of album sales, sold out shows, etc., Let's keep a proper perspective on the Doors as they were perceived at the time. They were THE "Dark" band of the 60s. People frowned on the Stones when they did songs like "Sympathy For The Devil", and they didn't like Jefferson Airplane's drug references, but "The Doors" were seen as an open gateway to damnation. Morrison was viewed in much the same way Marilyn Manson is now (no, Manson isn't this generation's Doors either), and Alice Cooper in his heyday (ditto). All of them didn't just shock and outrage parents when they arrived in the mainstream scene - they SCARED THE HELL out of them. Their music was discussed in sociological terms, not just for musical content. They were denied bookings in clubs and venues throughout the Bible belt. Mothers with baby carriages would RUN from them through airports. Ministers warned against their evil words from pulpits. I seriously doubt any parent ever had a stronger reaction to their kids blasting Pearl Jam music than "Turn that annoying overrated shit down!"

If you're talking about quality, then I'd say that the Doors are nothing compared to Pearl Jam. And Pearl Jam's not even in my top ten anymore.

Huge PJ fan!!!!
Have seen them over 6 times, to include a memorable concert weekend of Metallica/GNR and then the next day Lollapalloza with Pearl Jam, Red Hot, Soundgarden, Ice T....it was awesome. Have the PJ box set from years ago and I even like Mother Love Bone because of the connection. Man, I need some help. |

To each his own. The similarities are that the Doors were kind of underground like Pearl jam is today. I bet not too many people have heard Pearl Jam since Ten, or "Betterman" or "Last Kiss". Those that do come upon it are rewarded!
But anyways...K-Wise, you didnt mention the best song on Riot Act. "Greendisease" Fuckin love that song! And I was at that concert with the mirror at MSG in NY. Hands down one of the best concerts I have ever been to. They played forever!

Greendisease is just one of many songs that shows the slightly punk side of PJ. We all know Vedder is a huge fan of punk music. Every now and then he shows it. I noticed it on the No Code album as well. I think I like nearly the whole album if not the whole album.

Comparing The Doors vs. Pearl Jam musically is fairly pointless. Lifting anything out of its time period and judging it by the standards of today is an exercise in futility. Suffice it to say that many of yesterday's musical greats cited The Doors as a big influence on them, and many of tomorrow's musical greats will, no doubt, cite Pearl Jam as a big influence on them.

I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, and their 2003 show in Vancouver was just awesome. I didn't think the night could get any better and then for the final encore they played I Won't Back Down, Crazy Mary, Bu$hleaguer, Rockin' in the Free World and Yellow Ledbetter.
