New Wave of American Heavy Metal

metalcore has become very popular in these days.there are so many bands that do this style of music.in europe it is becomming popular at the moment, and i think in america it is very popular.but there aren't many bands that have a unique sound, most metalcor bands sound like in flames of killswitch engage clones.it is becomming as popular as nu metal or even grunge became in the past.but i don't think it will last very long.
yeah, there are good bands like unearth or atreyu, but there are so many bands that do this kind of music only because everyone does it and because the record companies sign almost every metalcore band.
what#s cour oppinion on the so called new wave of american heavy metal?

Blah, that's what I think. Iron Maiden meets Blink 182, it's like something out of Lovecraft...

The more accessible end of black/death metal has been clamoring for mainstream acceptance for years, I guess it was only a matter of time before elements of that stuff started making in to the airwaves.

I can't listen to any of this stuff with any kind of enthusiasm but Killswitch Engage beat the hell out of Korn and Slipknot at least. You could do worse.

I agree it's very bleh I haven't seen much that original, but that may be because it is really not my thing. (I haven't explored the genre that deeply)

Killswitch Engage is the shit.. nuff said. Atreyu is close. In every genre of music there are going to be copy cats. It's inevitable. Every genre also goes through a popular period. That's when the record companies start signing anyone and everyone. It's how they make money. True fans of said genre know what is good and what is cookie cutter. Just don't diss KsE or I will become very angry

In Flames - Whoracle was them on top of their game. I've heard that Killswitch Engage sound more like that than actual new In Flames.

In Flames' last 2 albums sounded kind of different to me. Like they were more generic or something... can someone extrapolate the reasoning behind that?

What are the bands that represent this genre? Darkest Hour? Don't laugh at me. I haven't listened to metal in a while, just looking for recomendations.

There are definitely some good metalcore bands doing the Gothenburg thing, e.g. Darkest Hour, Unearth, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage (mostly their older stuff), and Still Remains. Of course there are also some terrible ones - Atreyu and Bleeding Through come to mind.

iceburn: if you want to hear the band that basically started the Swedish thrash metal movement, listen to At The Gates. You might also want to check out Dark Tranquility and Arch Enemy.

I've been wishing Gothenberg would die long before the mainstream picked up on it. Yes, we have "Slaughter of the Soul" to blame for this. The surprising thing is that At the Gates were actually making pretty heady music before that.

well, I guess we're all on the same page.

I loved "Slaughter of the Soul". Bodom fucking rips, I love that stuff. And dark tranquillity of course. I'll check out the other stuff you guys mentioned for sure. You guys called it, the gothenburg stuff is what I was referring too. I figured Darkest hour was pretty much a copy of them... i do dig them though. So if there's anything else out there that sounds in that same vein and pulls it off, i'd love to hear it.
gracias

KillSwitch Engage, rocks, theyre not the kind of band that has to act all tough onstage just because of their style of music, they like the fuck around be funny. and they dont let their label F with their music, its all them, only them who do the recording work. i really could care less about any "screaming-o" or whatever the hell its called music, its horrible, double bass drums through everysong.... the screaming sucks. i dont know how all the dumb kids eat this stuff up.

yeah, they are preety good.but i don't like their new album very much.i can't help myself, but it sounds a bit like killswitch engage.therir older albums, like the haunted made me do it are good, but rEVOLVEr sucks in my oppinion.
in my oppinion, cob are one of the best present metal bands.they don't have a bad song, and theri lead guitar player and singer, alexi laiho plays as if he weren't from this world.
the thing whith metalcore is a bit courious,i know some people that only listen to ist because it is trendy, but they don't like "real" metal bands like at the gates of in flames.just courious if someone listens to killswitch engage or unearth, but he doesn't like the ones thaat inventet their music.it was the same thing with nu metal, but i personally think that in a few years there won't be more than 2 or 3 metalcore bands that still are that popular.

for god's sake - is every genre polluted with people who hate on bands that acheive some measure of popularity? do we really need to complain about the "trendy" NWOAHM bands, the most popular of whom aren't even close to making a gold album, let alone platinum?

anyway, i think there are some sweet american metal bands, though i hardly see enough similarities between them to invent a disparaging label - like mallcore.

bands that rock:

Killswitch Engage
All That Remains
Shadows Fall
Lamb of God
Mastodon
Blood Has Been Shed
Unearth

How these two bands haven't been mentioned before this is beyond me.

More bands:

Haggard - 19 member classical metal band from Germany
Chimaira
As I Lay Dying
The Black Dahlia Murder - All they need is good production values and they could be so much better

I have stopped labelling bands "Metalcore, Gothenburg, Butt Metal, whatever." All those sub-sub-sub genres start getting confusing and mixing together, so it really stopped mattering to me. Plus people start saying "This sub-sub-sub genre of metal/punk/whatever is for sellouts, true metalheads/punks/whatevers listen to other sub-sub-sub genre," and it all becomes a bunch of elitist crap.

That being said, I think "God Forbid" should be mentioned as a good American metal band. The new Machine Head is actually suprisingly good as well.

I personally like the NWOAHM movement. God knows I'd rather have it as a trend than nu metal or pop-punk/emo. *shudders*

It sort of lends itself to a label. I really don't know how well the bands sell but I don't like them too much so when the topic's open for discussion I'll likely say things like "you know, I don't really care for those bands".

It really is better than nu-metal though. A lot of times it does sound a little close to pop-punk/emo (but LOUDER) though, ick...

I guess I'm sorta "elitist" in that I won't praise any band that comes down the pike with a couple of catchy songs for being screaming geniuses. :/

NWOAHM???

There is no heavy metal in USA.To usa i must thanks to bring to live Thrash metal. but say that a new metal is coming from his territory is hillarious.

Some people here make the great sin of mix masters of really metal with mtv "bad boys" icons.
Mudvayne
Slipknot
Linkin Park'?????metal??? dont make me laugh.
New american metal dont come with that. Metal is one, theres is no country for metal.
