Beatles Album Tournament

Voting to continue until at least 8:00 PM, CDT, October 19, 2004. Directions on voting below.

1. REVOLVER
16. LIVE AT THE BBC

8. LET IT BE
9 PAST MASTERS 2

5. ABBEY ROAD
12. PLEASE PLEASE ME

4. THE BEATLES (The White Album)
13. WITH THE BEATLES

3. RUBBER SOUL
14. PAST MASTERS 1

6. MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR
11. HELP!

7. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
10. BEATLES FOR SALE

2. SGT. PEPPER
15. YELLOW SUBMARINE

What is this: A tournament of Beatle songs, seeded like a tennis tournament or the NCAA basketball tournament in the USA. Pick a winner in each of the 8 matches. I'll tally the votes and the winners advance.

How to vote: Simpliest way is to cut and paste. For ease of counting, I prefer the numbers be left by the name of the album.

How it was seeded: I put what are often cited as the best Beatle albums in the top four slots, but with this group, even the next three slots were of high quality. I put the 13 original albums, then included LIVE AT THE BBC and the two PAST MASTERS albums as a way to round out the field.

Discussions of the choices are encouraged, but again for ease of counting, I request that the "ballot" be at the top of the page, and the comments below.

Thanks to all that want to take part!

Surprise, the guy that seeded this took almost all top seeds. I prefer PAST MASTERS 2 over LET IT BE; two of the three hit singles on LET IT BE are also on PAST MASTERS 2 (albeit in slightly different form), and the extras like "Hey Jude" and "Rain" make PM2 a better listen to these ears.

Nice thread man. Weird but nice. My only problem was pitting The White Album against With the Beatles. Loved em both but damn, had to go with the one that started it all up. At least for me.

WITH THE BEATLES started it for you? A first generation UK fan, huh? Glad you're with us.

Weird thread? Perhaps. It's really a variation of "what's the best album" or "what's your favorite?" When we are done, we'll know nothing but what the majority of the TFP members vote on as their favorite, and even then, it won't be a clear consenus. My favorite of the lot here is MMT, but it won't win; that fact won't change a thing. The main object of this is to generate conversation, groaning, cheering, etc.

If you get a chance, please edit your note to keep the seeding number by the album as I posted it. Makes it SOOOOO much easier for me to count them later.

Thanks for playing!

If it can beat The White Album next, and then REVOLVER (if it stay in that long) and then whatever wins in the bottom half of the bracket, it'll be crowned the king! I've done this four other times, and two different albums have won twice.

pan6467 10-14-2004 03:51 PM

1. REVOLVER

8. LET IT BE

5. ABBEY ROAD

4. THE BEATLES (The White Album)

3. RUBBER SOUL

11. HELP! (really depends on which one... there were 2 one from Capital and the one from MGM/UA, that was billed as "the official movie soundtrack" with them spelling HELP on the cover that included instrumentals)

7. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

2. SGT. PEPPER

Also instead of "Past Masters" which is just a compilation I would have used the out of print but very very classic albums Beatles 65 and Meet The Beatles.

Sorry for the thread jack, a very good idea.

No thread jack at all, I hoped we'd have discussion. And if there's enough interest in this, we can move to the song catalog next; I have 256 entry tournament already drawn and ready to go.

I probably should have said more clearly that the entrants were the 13 original UK albums; using '65 or MEET THE BEATLES would have virtually duplicated BEATLES FOR SALE and WITH THE BEATLES. I picked 16 that were on CD. And yes, PAST MASTERS I and II are compilations, but not of the sort the 1962-66 or 1 are, since the tracks don't appear on other discs. I'm sure that neither of those will be around too long in this tourney; they are mainly taking up space in the first round! :)

You happened to pick the two instances where I thought the Capitol product was better than the UK rough equivilants. With the single "I Feel Fine/She's A Woman" included on '65 and "I Want To Hold Your Hand/This Boy", plus "I Saw Her Standing There" added to a lot of WTB, the fans here got a better running order on the albums.

If we can all see the votes, won't that make it easy to cheat and go with whichever album is ahead?

If someone was of a mind to "cheat" in such a fashion, nothing we can do about it. But I'm not sure why someone would want to tab a disc as their favorite of the duo in question if it isn't. And I frankly don't know of any other way to do it. I'm open to suggestions, though.

Damn you know your Beatles.
Do you know the KINKS? Why am I asking noone knows the KINKS anymore.

I take it the Help album mentioned was the Capitol and not the MGM/UA (I had the MGM/UA my parents gave me that one, 65 and Meet when I was a young pup. Played those 3 LPs till they were warped and scratched and just unlistenable). Also had the Stones Big Hits and Green Grass, a bunch of 45's and a couple Simon and Garfunkel's. Ahhh, looking back I grew up with great music.

I never was a big Kinks fan. I had a few albums (actually, 8-tracks) of MUSWELL HILLBILLIES and whichever one had "Celluloid Heroes" on it. I have a GOLDEN ERA compilation. While in college in the late 70's/early 80's, I got into LOW BUDGET, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT and STATE OF CONFUSION, and the great live album ONE FOR THE ROAD. All in all, though, I can take or leave them. I recognize the genius of Ray Davies, but it's just nothing I want to listen to that much.

Yes. I've tried to forget about the one with half-Martin instrumentals, much as I have the UA A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. The standardized versions we have now are big improvements over those two half-interesting discs.

Harry Cox 10-15-2004 02:56 PM

Great thread. By the way, #5 is a very low seed for "Abbey Road", my #1 album of all time of any band. Oh well, here are my picks:

1. REVOLVER

8. LET IT BE

5. ABBEY ROAD

4. THE BEATLES (The White Album)

3. RUBBER SOUL

11. HELP!

10. BEATLES FOR SALE

2. SGT. PEPPER

Just like the NCAA basketball tournament or Wimbledon or any other sporting event, the seed doesn't mean a thing in the final analysis. My previous four efforts at this tournament has shown that a top four seed for ABBEY ROAD wouldn't change its ultimate fate--it loses in the second round. But that's why I do these again with different players.

Thanks for joining in.

Harry Cox 10-19-2004 04:18 PM

You know it. ;) I want it all and I want it NOW.
