U2 - Vertigo

In the 20 years that I have been a U2 disciple I have never once been diappointed with a new single. Not even with Pop but I heard the new single "Vertigo" and thought it sucked. Sucked bad. It seems to be a giant step backwards from ATYCLB. I sincerely hope the new album has better songs than that. Has anyone else heard it and what do you think? Is it as bad as I think or am I just over-reacting due to my intense connection with the band. Just wondering and thanks.

I am a huge U2 fan and I love the song. I have to disagree when you say it is a step backwards from ATYCLB. It has that raw guitar sound of old U2. Just my opinion.

I like U2 (mostly) but didn't like the new single for just that reason; it was very Un-U2ish. They seem to have lost their trademark sound and joined the generic and the banal.

Dear Bono,

Please write better songs.

Thanks,

U2 has not produced anything that has grabbed my heart since 1991. But I still loved their Mexico Concert in 1997

The album is an "old style, back to roots" rock'n'roll guitar band album.

My brother works for the band (studio and on tour) and he says it's some of their best work for years.

So, we'll put you down as 'sitting on the fence' then

I like it, bit boring in the middle, but it generally bodes well for the album I think.

I love the early albums, but kinda lost interest lately. This sound seems to capture some of their boy/october/war sound, and I really like that. ATYCLB just bored me to tears, so I gotta hope this one is better. I think vertigo is fastpaced, but the lyrics are a bit cheesy in spots. I'll put up with that, I've always like bono's voice basically as an instrument, more than the actual meaning of it all. Just my point-oh-two....

I like it, and congrats to your brother. It's an honor to be traveling with a band like that. I assume he plays an instrument then?

After hearing the song, I'm really looking forward to the album. They sound very energized. They are taking another step away from where they are. U2 refuses to churn out clones of previous albums. Obviously, I really like Vertigo.

I'm a huge U2 fan and I love this song. Ive preordered the album on Amazon (there are about four different editions...) Vertigo has an Elevation type of sound to it. Just another phase of the many styles of U2.

I like some of U2's songs, mainly the older music. This one, however, is quite bad. You can tell its horrible when Bono starts singing in Spanish. That signals a dud.

Just to give this thread a bump...

Just last night I was able to lay my hands on a promotional copy of "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb", the new CD that this song came from.

The rest of the tracks are far superior to Vertigo. In fact, I'd have to say that Vertigo is the worst song on the CD, by far. It is, however, the most upbeat 'dancy' type song, which makes for a good single.

Wait until the CD comes out, and pick it up. I promise that, if you just skip the first track, the rest will be well worth it.

I single is ok i guess, im not a big u2 fan, but i dont mind the song. Its kinda funny how people are calling U2 sellouts just cause they used "vertigo" for a commercial. What up with the spanish part though, uno, dos, tres, catorce! 1,2,3,.....14!

I have to agree with Mr. Mephisto('s brother). I got the disk yesterday and it's not left my cd player since I first put it in. Some of the material does harken back to early U2, a plus in my book, but other songs are more reminiscent of mid-career work, while some other stuff sounds as new and fresh as a daisy.

So far, I'd have to say it's a well rounded release, covers all the typical U2 bases--breaks some new ground, also, but nothing earthshatteringly different.

I believe this is a critical point for the group; they have thus far managed to survive and stay relevent through many years and many changes in public tastes, opinions, and musical trends, where other bands got laid to waste in the wake of "the new sound", whatever it was at any given point. (i.e., punk, 80's pop, hair metal, grunge, emo, present day pop/r&b/urban trends)

This is a time they must once again establish themselves as an effective voice and force for the next decade to come. IMO, that's why there is such a huge swell of promotion behind this release - it could well determine what their place is/will be or was in the coming years. They've got alot riding on the success of this disk.

All that said, personally I think it's a VERY good collection of songs and will please U2 fans as well as appeal to a mass audience. Is it their best work ever? Too early to tell for me--the tunes still need more time to osmose into my DNA, like another two weeks of listening, but early indications are it's not their best work ever, but it is damn good and may be their best work in a long while.

The real question is, does the music buying public in general still care? Do they still wanna hear Bono's stream of consciousness lyrics and The Edge's multitap digital delay guitar fills and riffs? THAT'S the question everyone, not the least of which is the band themselves, wants an answer to.

But I gotta say this; they've survived this long & not by accident, they have a great track record, and they still seem to genuinely care about the quality of music they put out. Plus, they've done a smart thing by getting back to basics, to a familiar sounding U2, maybe in an effort to remind people who, over the years, could have forgotten what it was they liked about the band to begin with, yet all the while marketing it strongly to the "ipod generation". Good business, in my book. They're not going down without a fight, that's for sure.

My gut tells me we'll be hearing yet another new single released from this disk even as late as a year from now. So I say, go ahead and buy it. If you like U2, you wont be disappointed, plus you'll already know the lyrics to that "new" single from it that gets released next December!

ehhhh, but then again, what the hell do I know?!

i think i'd like this song much better if someone can explain to me why the opening line is: uno, dos, tres, catorce (1,2,3,14)

why doesn't he say cuatro?
