Most Under/Overrated Album/Band EVER!!

Fresh off the 'favorite albums' thread, I got to thinking...

Post here your views on the great albums that got skipped over, and the ones that got too much attention (at this point I am excluding all top 40 hits from the past ten years, because we all know they're crap, so don't even go there).

The album above, for instance, is a masterpiece, rife with subtleties and avante garde musicianship. I find it difficult to believe that the critics and fans lambasted it.

Now this one got waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much attention for an album that sounds like fourth-graders performed on it:

Apparently, the wee winky wee wee on the original cover was disallowed, so here is an edit.

Musical vomit. Nirvana.

What about you? Got any good ones?

Well not sure I entirely agree with you on the Nirvana one. But heres my pick

That album was definitely terribly underrated. I don't think I saw one video from it on T.V. here in America...I hardly saw any critics mention it...it didn't get nominated for ANY awards that I know of...it's one of the best albums I've ever heard. As far as too much attention goes and the fact that yer NOT accepting anything from the past 10 years...I'd saaaaaaay...I dunno.....hmm.....

Yeah what the craze about this album was...I do not know.

They kinda just took the same drum machine beat and wrote all their songs around it.

Asta!!

And I hate these threads for this simple reason. WHAT THE HELL IS THE ALBUM??? I'm not cool enough to know what the album/artist is simply by the cover art.

Sorry Averett, that's one of my peeves too. The album I posted above is Faith No More (Album of the Year). Their next most recent one, Angel Dust is also very good.

Hmm... this could end up more subjective than the most overrated/underrated guitarists and drummers...

Taking subjectivity to new heights...

Radiohead - Ok Computer

I don't understand all the brew ha ha over this album. Radiohead hasn't done anything for me since 'Pablo Honey'.

its almost a cliche that nivana has to appear in most overrated band threads

I dont really listen to music popular enough to be overrated in the first place anyway

Ok, i must say that saying Nirvana is overrated is not bandwaggony where I come from. As a matter of fact, I believe Kurt Cobain is idolized to the point of worship by a lot of people. If there are other people out there who think that they suck as much as I do, that just makes me feel like I'm not completely insane.

Pedro, you're right of course. King for a day is a really good album too. And Limp Bizkit is not all it's cracked up to be.

Now here's an interesting one. Watching MTV2 the other day and the 'Top 20 albums of the past 20 years' is on. These were supposedly albums that people had called in and voted for. Here's the kicker: Alannis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill came in first. That means that more people than not (who voted) thought that that was the best album of all time.

WHAT?

Most underrated band: Faith No More.
Most overrated band: too many to count... but I'd have to say White Stripes.

Underrated Album: Angel Dust - Faith No More. That is EASILY one of the top 10 masterpieces created in the 90's. Anyone who hasn't listened to that album is REALLY missing out on a crazy experience. It baffles me when these various magazines and entertainment sources do their "top x albums of the 90's" and leave this one out. It makes you wonder if they even paid attention to the real good stuff...

Overrated Album: Any early Beatles album. They started off as a sappy "boy band" of sorts, but it wasn't till later when they actually started makin the good stuff. When people praise the Beatles, I'm assuming that they're NOT including those early albums (at least I hope they aren't..)

Also, I don't quite get how Nirvana is overrated. Overrated, to me, means that people think they're a lot better than they really are. Whether you like Nirvana or not, you have to admit the lyrics were awesome (if you could decipher what they meant) and the music was raw and to the point - fit the lyrics perfectly.

Flat out, they're a legendary band a la Beatles/Zeppelin. How can a band like that be overrated?

[edit]
That'd be like having an under/overrated movies list and saying "The Godfather" is overrated. C'mon now... even if you don't like the movie, you KNOW damn well it's mark in movie history and the fact that it is easily hailed as one of the best movies ever made instead of a passing fad. Something like that can't be overrated because... yeah, I can't even explain why, but I'm sure you get what I'm sayin

There's a diff between a passing fad that's overrated and something that HAS a place in history. When kids actually start listening to music (as in.. real music and getting away from current mainstream), the most common bands they'll listen to are: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Nirvana. Of course, not always 100% of the time, but I know quite a few people in high school and I can pin point who's actually getting into music as opposed to those who just listen to the radio.. and that's typically the result set.

Also, you can bet any money that when the next "Nirvana/Zeppelin" storms the music scene, that band will have Nirvana as an influence.

I actually think the Foo Fighters are a better band than Nirvana. That's not to say that I think they're an excellent band, just that they're better than the merely good Nirvana. I never did get the fuss about In Utero, I see it as being somewhere between good and mediocre. "Rape Me" and "All Apologies" are Puddle of Mudd-level in quality. Although..."Heart-Shaped Box" is a very good song. So, my pick for overrated is not Nevermind but instead, In Utero.

Underrated? I'll go with the Stone Temple Pilots' Tiny Music. Sure, it had a mediocre/okay song in "Lady Picture Show", but the rest was absolutely aces. The biggest obstacle is the grating vocals, but I've grown to love them. "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" is my favorite STP song, bar none. "Adhesive" is excellent. "Art School Girl" is alternately wonderfully catchy and awesomely grating. "And So I Know" has a slight Vandross edge to it. "Seven Caged Tigers" is perfect as a closer. I'd give it four-and-a-half used heroin needles out of five.

edit: Also, I consider Core pretty overrated. I seriously consider it STP's worst album. Never liked "Wicked Garden" or "Creep", and greatly prefer the acoustic version of "Plush" The non-singles are about half-great, half-bad as well.

I'm saying Sublime-40 oz to Freedom is one of the most underrated albums of the 90's. It's brilliant both musicaly and lyricaly.

Overrated? I'm going to go with Smashing Pumpkins-Meloncholy..... While admittably a fair album, I don't think it deserves the cult following it had.

Great pick K-Wise, I love the sounds on diorama as well as neon ballroom, and the only stuff that really made it here in the states is frogstomp. Oh well. Diorama is going to be my pick, too.

As for overrated: Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, and Kid Rock. The first two almost blend into the same band for me. Creed, as well. Creed just seems like they are trying to milk everything out of their music, without a care in the world whether they are actually producing anything worthwhile. Because, mostly, their music sucks.

Oh, and one final note-- check the sig for another terribly underrated artist.

Eh, it's taking me some straining to get into their self-titled...I may never. "Stay With Me (Unlikely)" is immediately great, though.

Definitely. It would've been a billion times better had it been cut down to one CD. Gish and Siamese Dream are worlds better.
