Untitled - being ignorant about musicians.
I didn't know what to name this topic, but I just wanted to tell this somewhat stupid story because I was bored. I was talkin with some friends and we were talkin about concerts and my older, very very smart(at least on the topic of music) friend mentioned the last few concerts he went to and one of them was a Jimmy Page concert a while back and my 16 year old friend was like... Who the hell is Jimmy Page?
I, of course, laughed and he got mad but I wasn't laughing because he didn't know, I was laughing because I remember not knowing too. When I was about his age Page and Plant were touring I'd hear their names on the radio like every 20 minutes saying how they were rock gods. I heard names like John Fogerty, Pete Townshend ,Roger Waters and didn't know why the hell they were "legends." Hell, I thought Jeff Beck was the guy who sang Devil's Haircut... Does anyone else remember a point in your life where instead of just listening to music you wanted to know where the members went after the band, even if they aren't that good on their own? In 20 years I wanna be full of music knowledge to pass down to my future kid(s).

Hear hear! I can't remember exactly when it was that I started thinking about this (probably about the time I started tring to make sense of Jethro Tull's ever shifting lineup), but yeah, at some point I wanted to be able to form an opinion about individual musicians mostly so I could be smug about it, but also in some degree so that there would be some backup when I got old and started bitching about the kids today and the NOISE they listen to.

Ok get this... at one point in my life (namely high school), I was really into techno, especially the happy hardcore and anthem rave sort (you know, that NOISE kids listen to). Jimmy Page? Jethro Tull? I didn't know who they were, nor did I care. Boy did I suck!
Now, I'm still kinda bad with band lineups, but I'm working on it. And my musical taste has definitely formed into something I consider to be quite good, and yes, I may be even developing a healthy amount of musical snobbery as well ![]()

Hey I've always wondered this....When David Bowie started dressing very flamboyantly and wearing make-up all over his face....around the time he had the song "Ziggy Stardust" but did he adopt that alias for a while as well? And go by Ziggy Stardust? Or was it JUST a song title of his? (Probably a really stupid question but I'm curious anyway)
Asta!!

The first time I heard Led Zeppelin. I was about six or seven and all I listened to, as far as music, was the California Rasins. I was a little kid and didn't care. Then my Dad, God bless him, turned on his favorite station and 'Dazed and Confused'. It blew my mind. I had heard rock from this era before, but I wasn't really listining. For years after this I listined to everything rock. I knew NOTHING about who was playing it, I just knew I liked it.
Then I heard Puff Daddy's 'Come with me'. He took 'Kashmir' and started rapping about Godzilla over it. I was pretty steamed about it for a while. Then I watched the video on MTV. There was this guy on guitar, playing the chorus. I squinted my eyes and thought really hard. Who the heck was this? Well after checking it out I found out it was a guy named Jimmy Page. I'd been listining to him for years and years, but I had no idea who he was. I went all over searching for information on Jimmy, then Led, then all the bands that I loved. There was all this great information and music out there that I didn't even know existed. I listined to everything from Neil Christian & the Crusaders to playing with Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds. I started to realize that there are growth patterns in artists skills, among other things. That was my experince. |
