VH1's The 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock
Did anyone else see this on TV last night? It was like 5 episodes @ 1 hour each. Here's the full list.
100.) Quiet Riot 99.) Bad Brains 98.) Mountain 97.) Primus 96.) Meat Loaf 95.) Fugazi 94.) Yes 93.) Lenny Kravitz <--- HOW THE FUCK IS HE ON THE LIST!?!@? 92.) The Black Crowes 91.) Danzig 90.) Rainbow 89.) Lita Ford 88.) Tool 87.) King Crimson 86.) Foreigner 85.) Whitesnake 84.) UFO 83.) King's X 82.) Queensryche 81.) The Pixies 80.) Green Day 79.) Ratt 78.) Marilyn Manson 77.) Hole 76.) Bon Jovi 75.) Spinal Tap 74.) Pat Benatar 73.) Twisted Sister 72.) Foo Fighters 71.) Lynyrd Skynyrd 70.) Living Colour 69.) Megadeth 68.) Hüsker Dü 67.) The Rolling Stones 66.) Joan Jett and the Blackhearts 65.) The Cult 64.) Steppenwolf 63.) Boston 62.) Ministry 61.) Jethro Tull 60.) The New York Dolls 59.) Bad Company 58.) Anthrax 57.) Heart 56.) Rob Zombie/White Zombie 55.) Blue Öyster Cult 54.) Sonic Youth 53.) Korn <------WHAT. THE. FUCK!?!? 52.) Faith No More 51.) Thin Lizzy 50.) Slayer 49.) The Smashing Pumpkins 48.) Janis Joplin 47.) Soundgarden 13.) Queen 12.) The Sex Pistols 11.) Aerosmith 10.) Kiss 9.) Guns N' Roses 8.) The Who 7.) Van Halen 6.) Nirvana <----How the fuck did they get in the top 10, let alone the top 100? 5.) Metallica 4.) AC/DC 3.) Jimi Hendrix 2.) Black Sabbath 1.) Led Zeppelin Who do you think should and/or should not be on this list? I think Lenny Kravitz, Korn, and Nirvana should not be on this list at all. Putting their no talent asses on this list is a disgrace to all of the other great bands. I also think Foreigner, Boston, Tool, Blue Öyster Cult, and Lynyrd Skynyrd should definitely be higher in the list.

One day an Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman walked into a pub together. They each bought a pint of Guinness. Just as they were about to enjoy their creamy beverage, three flies landed in each of their pints. The Englishman pushed his beer away in disgust. The Scotsman fished the fly out of his beer and continued drinking it, as if nothing had happened. The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!" |

10.) Kiss <------Damn right!!!
But above: 13.) Queen 28.) Rush & 24.) Iron Maiden???? VH1's lists have never really made any sense to me. I think it is funny that Spinal Tap made it on to the list. It would have been funnier if they ranked higher that Nirvana. The Beatles should have at least made honorable mention. Sure they are not hard rock, but IMHO, without them, none other would exist.

Yea, I saw this a long time ago. I have no clue how anyone could put nirvana at 6 as there are a lot of artists above them that could have been considered more influential or "great." The thing with nirvana is that everyone in the music industry gives them too much respect because of the way they blew up really big and then boom, kurt cobain kills himself and the whole world proclaims him a rock god. Were they a good band, yea, they were, but there was much better music that came out of that same scene (soundgarden, aic, pearl jam, mudhoney). I was happy to see bad brains on the list, they deserve it, but 99? come on, they deserve better than that. Anyway, the moral of the story is, VH1

Seriously though Yes were 94 and yes kick the bloody bajesus out of 70% of this list. They should have been MUCH higher on the list. And the fact that Lenny Kravitz is the first one to beat them out REALLY pisses me off. I loved this list though...not particularly fond of the order of things like Nirvana beating out Pink Floyd, Queen, Van Halen, The Doors, Bad Company, Lynard Skynard, Jethro Tull, etc. etc. I'd say 50% of the bands above them are better than them including Pearl Jam in my opinion but I think most of the bands that made it deserve to be there and pretty much all the ones that REALLY deserve to be there are on there.

Well, I was going to re-rank the whole thing, but my HTML skills aren't up to it. So here's my top 20:
1) Black Sabbath 2) Led Zeppelin 3) Jimi Hendrix 4) Iron Maiden 5) Rush 6) AC/DC 7) Cream 8) Megadeth 9) Kiss 10) Soundgarden 11) Guns N' Roses 12) Blue Öyster Cult 13) Primus 14) Tool 15) Deep Purple 16) Living Colour 17) Frank Zappa 18) Queen 19) Faith No More 20) Ozzy Osbourne For the record, Metallica came in at #24 in my ranking, Nirvana at #47. I laid the whole list out and asked myself of each band, are they better, more talented, more authentically hard rock (whatever that means. Difference between Pat Benetar and Mötorhead.), and /or more innovative than the band above them. If they were, then I bumped them up.

the sex pistols beat out the clash? fuck that. sex pistols were a bunch of angry hacks who didnt even know how to play their instruments when they came together and came out with one fucking album that was even worth a damn. shit everyone sounded like the sex pistols in '77. add intelligence, talent, and love for music and then you have the clash. a band that outpreforms and outclasses the pistols by leaps and bounds. they did so much for music in 5 years its astounding. 5 albums that streched and challenged genres and what do the pistols have? gimme a break.

^ Listen to a song like "I'm In Love With My Car" "We Will Rock You" "Born To Be Kings" "Tie Your Mother Down" etc. and tell me Queen didn't rock hard. If yer gonna call on them ya might as well call on Yes too. Costello has a point too...Joey Ramone said it himself "The Sex Pistols are a good band...The Clash are great band"

We could argue personal taste all day. I mean, you may not like Nirvana, but others think they are the best ever. Personally, I think the Clash and Rush are two of the most overrated piece of shit bands ever, but I'm not going to question whether they belong on this list or not.

Love em or hate em, but Nirvana, like Zeppelin/Sabbath before them, is one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands from the past 20 years. There have been others, yes, but none quite as great as Nirvana.

VH1 more than likely didn't know who they or Kings X and a shit load of the other bands are the Musicians, Front Men, Journalists, VJ & DJ's, etc. are the ones who picked the bands...and what order they ranked them. They're the ones who knew about Bad Brains...not VH1.

I pertty much have to agree that Nirvana belongs on the list, but not in the top 10. It doesn't matter if you did something first if the thing that you did wasn't worth doing. Props to Cobain for pretty fair songwriting. Massively overrated because he killed himself. (Is this the meaning of number 1 with a bullet?). Major Props to Dave Grohl for being a kickass drummer and carrying the band.
