none of those are really metal and in my opinion they all kind of give metal a bad name

Metal is a diverse branch of music, those bands are certainly metal. They may not be your brand of metal but they are someone elses. There's no need to be a metal snob, this isn't blabbermouth.net. Hell, you even listed Rammstein. I could just as easly say that In Flames is recycled unoriginal garbage but I'm not going to.

How the hell could Pantera not be considered metal? Have you ever listened to Vulgar Display of Power? It was one of the most influential albums of the 90's.

ForwardtoDeath 08-12-2004 09:56 AM

Metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \m/,

I listen to all genres of metal (excluding nu-metal, which i dont consider to be metal) and some of my favorite bands are:

SLAYER!!!!
Pantera
Megadeth
Metallica
Cryptopsy
Death
Dying Fetus
Opeth
Testament
Black Sabbath

The list goes on, these are just the bands i could think of off the top of my head.

I wouldn't really call any of those bands the epitome of metal music, but Damage Plan is a damn fine group of musicians. Much more industrial than metal, but eh.

Redjake 08-12-2004 10:18 AM

Metallica
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Godsmack (suck it)
Black Sabbath
Ministry
Manowar (OH YEAH!!!)

kutulu 08-12-2004 10:29 AM

I used to work with a guy who listened to Manowar. I was always asking him why we all had to be punished with his homoerotic viking music :) I think they can play their instruments better than most out there but they lack in the creation process.

Zephyr66 08-12-2004 03:41 PM

oops, i left some of my favs off my list without noticing: stratovarius, yngwie malmsteen, Carpathian forest and blaze

but kutulu, 1. pantera's an exception to what i said. not my
favourite metal, but still metal
2. i listed rammstein, but i also said it didnt really fit
under metal, they still rock though

Nefir 08-12-2004 07:30 PM

\m/ @..@ \m/

ahem.

Favorite genre has to be operatic power-metal. Its just so much fun to listen to!

Favorite bands: Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Therion

Thats not to say I don't love other types of metal as well. Opeth is one of my favorite metal bands out there. But operatic power-metal just rawks :D

MSD 08-12-2004 07:45 PM

I listen to all sorts of stuff. I'd put down most of what you said in the original post. Off the top of my head, I'll also add Mystic Circle, Dark Tranquillity, KMFDM(listen to them live and they sound more metal than industrial,) Chimaira, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Opeth, probably a bunch of others that I can't think of.

Just because it isn't heavy metal doesn't mean it isn't metal. Also, I will hunt down and kill the first person who uses the term "nu-metal" in this thread. My brother is one of the idiotic elitists who, for example, started hating Linkin Park after being a big fan solely because he wanted to put himself above people who do like them.

kutulu 08-12-2004 07:59 PM

I'm definitely sick of the nu metal term, but that's more because of all the time I used to spend on blabbermouth.net

I see Opeth listed a lot, and I've sampled a bunch of their music. I would like it much better if the guy didn't do the same old bullshit "low end incoherent growling" vocal style. Some of the instrumental stuff rivals "Master of Puppets" era Metallica, but the "singing" (ahem) is awful and ruins it for me.

Lamb of God rocks, going to see them at the toronto opera house on the 29th with Atreyu, Unearthed and Every Time I Die. Hurray for me!

mercury-hg 08-15-2004 06:36 PM

the way i see it, there are 3 categories in metal:

1) heavy/intense/crazy with no vocal melody, usually has STRONG focus on musicianship (gets respect)
2) slightly less heavy/intense/crazy with some vocal melody (sometimes gets respect)
3) rodney dangerfield metal

i listen to all 3 and it's nice to see that not everyone needs to hate on metal that isn't quite as metal as, say, Death. anyway i listen to:

1) Old In Flames - Lamb of God - The Haunted - Shadows Fall - Opeth - Old Metallica - Megadeth - The Black Dahlia Murder - Pantera
2) Killswitch Engage - All That Remains - Chiamara - Mastadon - Unearth - New In Flames - New Metallica - Tool
3) System of a Down - Disturbed - Mudvayne - Sevendust - Slipknot

I disagree. But that's what's great about music. We all have different tastes. I don't need my metal vocalist to chirp like a canary, but this particular style does nothing for me, and it cuts against what I think is wonderfully well crafted and brilliantly played music.

k1ng 08-16-2004 08:23 PM

The Opeth singer actually has a lot of variety in his vocals. Sure there is a bunch of grunting and growling but there is also very smooth and melodic parts to balance some songs out. In fact their newest album has no "low end incoherent growling" at all.

docbungle 08-16-2004 10:31 PM

Oh hell yesss.

Faith No More
Fantomas
7,000 Dying Rats
Immortal Dominion
God Forbid
Godflesh
Opeth
Lamb of God

The list could go on forever...
