Neal Peart from Rush. The hand speed of this guy is amazing. Just listen to Moving Pictures and you'll hear for yourself.

Then going back a ways -- Max Roach brilliant drummer who played along side jazz greats like Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker.... (and last I checked, he's still kicking drum butt)

I'm gonna have to go with Danny Carrey. In every band he's in the man just shines with talent. Amazing drummer and very diverse.

Anyone who can be that precise at that speed deserves to be listed.

Simon Phillips is one of my favourites.

Also, Virgil Donati, Danney Carrey for monster drumming. And have always had a soft spot for Carter Beauford from DMB (listed TWICE on that list: 72 & 92) and Jimmy Chamberlain from the Smashing Pumpkins- I love his playing style and his sound.

There are a damn load of great drummers out there.

That was a pretty worthless list, order wise, as are almost all Top X Y of Z lists. However, it was very helpful in constructing my own Top Ten.:

1 Neil Peart (Rush) (18)
1 Bill Bruford (Yes/King Crimson) (3)
1 Tim Alexander (Primus) (6)

2 Stewart Copeland (Police) (83)
2 Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Frank Zappa) (59)
2 Steve Gadd (Steely Dan) (N/A)

3 Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) (72)
(He'll be one of the all time greats if the Smack doesn't kill him first.)

4 Mike Giles (King Crimson) (75)
4 Charlie Watts (Rolling Stones) (1)
4 Jeff Porcaro (Toto/Steely Dan) (82)
4 Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) (66)

5 Matt Cameron (Soundgarden) (49)
5 Chris Frantz (Talking Heads) (78)
5 Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience) (99)
5 Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) (80)

6 Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull) (73)
6 Mike Shrieve (Santana) (12)
6 John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) (45)
6 Keith Moon (Who) (15)

7 Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) (N/A)
7 William Calhoun (Living Colour) (11)
7 Ian Paice (Deep Purple) (74)

8 Lars Ulrich (Metallica) (87)
(Yeah, he's a little shit, but he sure can pound the fuck out of a drum kit)

9 Dave Abbruzzese (Pearl Jam) (69)

10 Rick Allen (Def Leppard) (N/A)
(Consolation prize/"What a trooper" Award. He's a much better drummer with one arm then he ever was with 2.)

Lots of ties there, but there's a lot of Drummers who only have style, not skill, to pick between them.

Q: What did the Drummer get on his S.A.T's?
A: Drool.

we are thinking about great dummers and no-one mentions jazz players?
how is this possible?

a small list of who i can remember while drinking coffee, in no order, and quite sure that there are other dummers out there i either cannot remember and/or have not heard yet who should be here:

elvin jones
eddie blackwell
andrew cyrille
don moye
jerome cooper
max roach
rashied ali
sunny murray
william hooker (check out his duet release with thurston moore)

chris cutler

and tony allen, who was the drumming (and musical) backbone for most early fela anikulapo kuti tracks--through the early 1980s---and is just a monster....

and why only trap drums?

i might object to considering drummer who play 4 (boom chak da boom boom chak), in general, except---
for more power and/or speed oriented material, the good dr. bindujeet of bindujeet partners llc is a veritable gateway to a legion of black metal drummers, the recordings of which simply leave one's tiny unsuspecting brain pummelled into a a kind of brakish froth...
maybe i will try to lure him over here.

waves a hat of meat.....

Danny Carey from Tool is definitely one of the best.
Lars Ulrich, although a bitch, is good.

Also, I don't know his name, but the guy from 3 Doors Down is pretty good. I know you ordinarily wouldn't think of their drummer to be on a list that celebrates speed and stuff, but I went to one of their shows and he had a several minute long solo and it sounded awesome. So he's a sleeper at least.

I don't know about the current record, but with the previous records the drums were recorded live and then reproduced electronically, hence the precision.

I'm as big of a Metallica fan as possible but I've always thought of Lars as a average to above average drummer.

My two favorites are Gene Holgan (Death, Testament) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Testament, Fantomas). I didn't expect anyone to know about Gene but he is an amazing drummer. Extrememly fast and precise.

I thought that at least someone would have mentioned Lombardo. He's about as good as it gets.

I can't comment on who's best in terms of technicality and creativity because I know precious little about drumming, but the drummer with the biggest "uuuuuuuuuuuuh(confused-at-how-incredibly-quick-and-confusing-the-drums-are-smiley)" factor, for me, has to be Brann Dailor from Mastodon.

Some great ones that I don't believe have been mentioned:

Matt Abts (Gov't Mule)
Alan Evans (Soulive)
Stanton Moore (Galactic)

My favorite:
Neil Peart (if you're a fan, you ought to pick up Ghost Rider, his book about his long motorcycle trip where he attempted to heal after losing his wife and daughter)

I'll throw in votes for Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland. Peart because he shatters the 'Stupid Drummer' stereotype, and Copeland because he hates Sting more than I do.
Oh yeah, Neil Peart's book is called 'The Masked Rider'
