The consummate Ozzfest 2004 thread
So, how many people have been/are going to go to any given date one this year's Ozzfest tour? I went just the other day to the one at Jones Beach on Long Island and it was absolutely incredible. The spirit was a bit diminished in that Jones Beach is owned by Tommy Hilfiger and therefore alcohol (among other things) is outlawed... so the normal Jaegermeister sponsor trucks with free crap weren't there, and some of the stands had words on shirts censored with duct tape... otherwise it was outstanding. No bands were truly horrible (though there were some whose music i despise), and many bands were fucking incredible. On the second stage I'd have to say the best band was Every Time I Die. I had never really heard them before Wednesday and I was fucking BLOWN AWAY by their show, it was fucking crazy. I walked out of there with a signed copy of their CD, I was so impressed. Just an awesome performance. As for the main stage, it's tough to say who was the best but it's between Slayer and Judas Priest. Slayer did a fucking awesome, albeit shorter than they deserved, set, with mostly reign in blood-era tracks. Priest, however, had a 75 minute set in the middle of a lightning storm and Rob Halford sounded as good as he ever had. They were fantastic though, utterly flawless. As for the other bands on the main stage, Black Label Society were good but rushed in their short set, Superjoint Ritual's music was outstanding but Phil Anselmo was being a dick with his whole "Pantera's Dead" tirade he went on (prompting a "SHUT THE FUCK UP" chant from the crowd), Dimmu Borgir were excellent though they didnt play any of my favorite songs of theirs, and Black Sabbath were surprisingly good. Geezer Butler looked as good as ever on bass and same with Tony Iommi at guitar. Ozzy is obviously a mere shadow of his former self BUT his vocals were great despite his frailty. Bill Ward didn't look so great, and although he played well on drums, he looks like he's giving up the ghost. All in all though they were solid.
here's a starred rating (out of 10) for each band that played cause i'm bored (in chronological order) Bleeding Through: ******** (8/10) Atreyu: ******* (7/10) Darkest Hour: ******* (7/10) Throwdown: ********* (9/10) Magna Fi: * (1/10, their music sucked, sounded like fucking Puddle of Mudd. they didnt put on a bad show if you like that sort of thing, though) Devildriver: ***** (5/10... decent music but their singer was annoying) Every Time I Die: ********** (10/10, possibly the best band of the day) Unearth: ******* (7/10) Otep: ***** (5/10, not really my thing but their singer is talented.... and frightening) God Forbid: ******** (8/10, striking resemblance in sound to Killswitch Engage) Lacuna Coil: * (1/10. Hate their music, it's basically evanescense+distortion. and i hate evanescense.) Lamb of God: ********* (9/10, love their music, and the new stuff that they played was great too. Very impressive) Hatebreed: ******** (8/10, they'd have gotten one or two more stars if they'd played A Call For Blood) Slipknot: ***** (5/10. I don't like their music, I do like their stage show, but their stage show is also growing on me.... and not in a good way. This was more boring than usual) MAIN STAGE Black Label Society: ******* (7/10) Superjoint Ritual: ******* (7/10, phil deprived them of a star or two by not shutting up) Dimmu Borgir: ******* (7/10) Slayer: ********** (10/10) Judas Priest: ********** (10/10) Black Sabbath: ******** (8/10) So if anyone else has gone or plans to go, POST HERE ...and do the starring thing too cause thats so cool.

I was another who was unwilling to shell out so much cash on tix. I definetly wouldn't have been caught dead atht eh Tommy Hilfiger theatre.
Of all the bands I like I would've loved to see Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Unearth, and God Forbid. As for the rest, I either saw them already or their music doesn't interest me. I'm still biased against Hatebreed ever since seeing them at The Dowtown on Long Island - their pits are always brutal but it was 90% fights between kids and while all the other bands stopped playing and told them to break it up, Hatebreed just kept on playing. It's a good thing you didn't go to the PNC Banks Arts center - I hear people got their cars vandalized because they parked in the parking lot. It's cool you had a good time - I might consider going next year if the line up is worth it.

I'm planning to go to the Raleigh show.. I like most of the lineups but I really can't wait to see Bleeding Through and Lamb of God again. They kick ass.. as far as pits go.. I like to stand on the edge of the pit and get my hits in as people get knocked into me but with Hatebreed playing followed by Slipknot..I may not stand so close.. am I a pussy...nope...I just prefer to keep my nose unbroken
