Loops, am I the only one getting this shit?

so, a week or two ago I decided I wanted to hear the new Fleetwood Mac tunes. I fire up the old Kazaa Lite and type in the name of the album and soon I have all 18 songs downloading. Later, I go to listen to them and all but 5 or 6 of them are loops. If you havent heard any of these yet, what it is is a 10-15 second clip of a song, looped to play over and over for whatever amount of time the song is supposed to last. In this case, it was a loop of the first single, called Peacekeeper. I have tried dling some of these songs 3 and 4 times and still keep getting this fucking loop.

anyone else having this trouble? is this something the music companies came up with to interfere with song/file sharing?

and if so, who are the assholes who keep this shit on their comps? or do you think the music companies have comps set up specifically to spew this shit into the p2p community?

isnt it about time that the RIAA just admits that it has lost? Had they been on the ball (say about 5 years ago), they could have put all this p2p technology to work for them. Instead they ignored it and now WE have it. They'll never get it back.

rant over.

I haven't run into that particular problem yet, but I'd be willing to bet the farm that it's done by the record companies.

I have had one incident where a song I downloaded said "Property of MCA Records" all the way through the song. Hehehe.

I really can't blame them too much. I mean...I know I probably abuse the p2p thing sometimes and the artists really do deserve to get the loot from those tracks.

I understand checking out some songs to see if you wanna buy the album. But it's so easy to just rip off a copy and not think twice about it.

Uhhh...did I just babble a little? Sorry. :) It happens sometimes.

BAMF 05-04-2003 09:20 PM

Yeah...its the RIAA or someone working for them..im pretty sure that flat out admitted it, if winamp would add a way to delelte songs (not just from playlist, but from comp as well) then this problem would probably quickly disappear. Its just hard to match ID3 tags to filename sometimes, and I got enough that it is annoying to search for the 1 song I have that loops

Sion 05-04-2003 10:38 PM

I too use winamp bamf, and I have a simple solution to that problem. whenever I dl a song, it goes into a folder called tempmusic, until I have a chance to listen to it. if it makes the grade, it graduates to the permanent music folder, otherwise its out the door. there are rarely more than half a dozen songs in my temp folder.

i have run into the "loop" problem many times (i have a massive mp3 collection...all legal.....yes, that's right.....legal.....)

a good strategy that i use is to never choose the highest amount of users for the song you are attempting to download.

rock_bottom 05-05-2003 07:18 AM

When downloading a song, I go for the one with the most sources. I get maybe one loop for every 100 downloads.
A copy that thousands of people have is much more likely to be the correct copy.

ReggErving 05-05-2003 08:15 AM

Had that problem with two songs from the new Rdaiohead CD.

Also tried to download the new White Stripes CD and had the same problem as you descibed.

dankitti 05-05-2003 09:53 AM

the ones that say NO LOOPS, NO BLANKS, REAL VERSION and CHECK IT OUT always seem to be blanks and loops. i had that trouble with The Dixie Chicks and the new Peter Gabriel album, but interestingly, i can download indie bands with NO trouble. NO loops with slint, tortoise, modest mouse, or mogwai.

When I tried to download the newest Tom Petty album, all the songs were the same. The Last DJ.

Magpie0001 05-05-2003 11:47 AM

Ive been stealing music since Napster & have never got a song with loops.
If it is the record company thats doing this its a real dirty trick but I dont htink it'll stick, someome will figure out a way around it.

On another note, I ave a friend whos a professional musician, He says that the money you pay for a Cd is enormously inflated bu the record companys for no reson other than to make more money & usually it doesnt go to the artisit concerned. Not that we didnt know allready but Its nice to hear it from a person on the "inside".
If there was a website or something that I could send an artist I apreciate money directly I'd gladly hand over my cash, untill then, fuck the fatcats.

fienna 05-06-2003 07:55 AM

hehe... that's pretty funny - i never thought that the RIAA would stoop so low as to introduce bogus MP3's into the community...

i pretty much left the MP3 scene back in 99, so i'm not sure what's going on now... all the trojan horse software got me thinkin that this wasn't something i wanted to pursue, ya know? besides, if i find music i like, i buy it - i believe in supporting starving artists cause i like their cd's and i want them to make more music, ya know?

but one of the best things about early napster that i'll always miss was the ability to say "this is shit" before spending 20 bucks on a cd, or to say "wow, this is great - who the hell is VNV nation anyways???" and then go buy their back catalog...

Private FTPs -- the only way to fly.

A new way to stop piracy

I just downloaded an advance copy of Less Than Jake's new CD "Anthem" and during every track, like every 30 or 45 seconds it has band members dubbed in over the music saying go buy the record May 20th. It gets annoying after a while. I guess artists are trying everything nowadays.

meanSpleen 05-06-2003 07:22 PM

Madonna did the same thing for her American Life (or whatever it is called) album. They are doing it because music piracy is bad for business.

Actually, I don't see it that way. Thats just what Big Media tells me think.

wakelagger 05-06-2003 07:39 PM

Madonna released mp3's that were titled as songs on her upcoming album onto various p2p networks that consisted of Madonna saying "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"
So, hackers, being the witty folk they are, decided to rip apart Madonna's website.
They put real, full length mp3's of her yet-to-be released songs up on her hacked site with this sentence prominently displayed across the top. "This is what the fuck I'm doing."
:D :D

Gortexfogg 05-06-2003 08:08 PM

Aargh. Music piracy will be harder to get rid of than real piracy. However, I don't think inserting "Buy this album" in a techo song would work...

I sail the high accountant seas!

MSD 05-08-2003 09:09 AM

I swear that Lars Ulrich is personally responsible for all those Metallica songs I downloaded that are missing the last 20 seconds.

Derwood 05-08-2003 10:29 AM

I hear that the next thing the music industry is going to do is create some programs that will flood Kazaa, Grokster and the like with hundreds of thousands of bogus mp3's. Won't get rid of the real ones, but will certainly piss enough people off to stop trying

heh...

is another reason i'm glad i don't use p2p for my mp3s :D

Emotion 05-08-2003 04:10 PM

lots of people get their music from direc connect or things like that anyway, so this doesn't even affect most people

gibber71 05-08-2003 07:03 PM

Well the artist's may not be making anymore money through royalties but at least they're fighting back.If someone was ripping into your livelihood, you'd fight back to.

bundy 05-10-2003 10:59 PM

selfish bastards.
don't they know how poor we peasants are?

Unknown Poster 05-13-2003 11:21 AM

The first time I ran into this was when Audioslave just released their first song. I wanted to get a taste of the rest of the album, but wound up with squat.

josh_s08 05-13-2003 04:32 PM

I had this problem last night for songs from the new godsmack cd that i bought today because of the single that i d/led and saw on mtv. All the songs were really just the single looped at different langhts.
