Oldies

What's everyone's favourite oldies song?

I've got a ton, but I think my absolute favourite has to be GuiTarzan by Ray Stevens... Does anyone remember this song? It's so funny...

So you guys are up... whats your favourite?

I don't know what year it is when a song becomes officially an oldie (always changing, you know) but I guess I'll go with whatever plays on the oldies station...

"Sunshine Superman" by Donovan

Ah, hell, I can't help myself, here is another...

"Heard it Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye

djtestudo 04-16-2004 07:56 PM

"Centerfield" by CCR

"You May Be Right" by Billy Joel

Do they count?

I wondered that myself, when I posted this... Some people say '50's and '60's, and others include 80's...

Hmmmm....
Right now, Im kinda leaning towards Who are You by The Who, but thats probably because its playing right now... I dont think I could narrow it down at all...

I remember when my "oldie" station started playing disco songs. Man oh man, if time keeps progressing like it always has (and probably will) the oldies stations will one day play "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains.

I think of 'oldies' as Ragtime leading up to the 1920's/30's. My favourite song for enjoyable pop ditties (off the top of my head) would skip the 1960's and 70's entirely and very likely be "Mr Five by Five" from the 30's or 40's; not sure exactly when that written without checking.
For the more serious music, I would go with I Know Why (and so do you) and When Angels sing. The version of I know Why as sung by Paula Kelly with the Glenn Miller orchestra would likely place on my overall top ten list of songs.

not a CCR song, but rather one by John Fogerty, who was the main songwriter of the group. was released YEARS after CCR split up.

as for the definition of "oldies" I tend to think of it in subjective terms. a song is an oldie to a given person if it was recorded before he or she was born.

Beatles - Things We Said Today

or

Rolling Stones - Paint it Black

Really...thanks.

Glad my father didn't see that, he'd kill me :D

Have to add "Kokamo" by the Beach Boys.

laconic1 04-19-2004 11:13 AM

I hate to admit this since I'm only 24, but I do have an oldies station as one of my presets on my radio. I can't pick a single favorite but I do like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and a lot of stuff from Motown.

Redlemon 04-19-2004 11:41 AM

"Love, Unrequited, Robs Me Of My Rest", by Gilbert & Sullivan, from Patience.

... how far back does an oldie reach?

CinnamonGirl 04-19-2004 11:44 AM

Just one? hmmm...I guess I'll go with "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King. Artist-wise, I like the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly quite a bit.

My dad has the Time-Life `50s collection...I used to listen to that constantly. Lots of great songs...

Gortexfogg 04-21-2004 05:44 AM

Pretty much anything by Gershwin. That and "Send in the Clowns" by I don't remember who...

hilbert25 04-21-2004 06:44 PM

On the Dock of the Bay - Otis Day

blankstare 04-21-2004 06:47 PM

Man, I've always loved "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited. Just the perfect instrumental.

kl0pper 04-22-2004 04:14 AM

"splish splash i was taking a bath" is genius

Derwood 04-22-2004 05:31 AM

Radio stations classify "oldies" as popular music from the 50's and 60's. There is a little of a blurred line between Oldies and Classic Rock, as Classic Rock roughly covers the late 60's through the 70's.

That said, I'll go with "So Happy Together" by the Turtles.

gorilla 04-22-2004 06:50 AM

When I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles
Surfin' Safari - Beach Boys

Otis Redding did Dock of the Bay.

Otis Day & the Knights was the band in "Animal House"

As for my favorite, I'd say anything by the Beatles

Stompy 04-22-2004 12:07 PM

I loathe all oldies songs, but considering they play The Doors now on oldies stations around here, I'll simply answer with: anything by The Doors.

[edit]
And The Beatles AFTER their corny "Love me do" and "Help!" phase *shudder*.

FoolThemAll 04-22-2004 01:47 PM

Hey, "Help!" kicked ass. Title song, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Yesterday, Ticket To Ride, it's good stuff.
