old sad song requests
Can anybody give me some song ideas? I'd like to find songs that are kind of melancholy (sp?) sounding, from perhaps the late 50s to mid 70s. Examples would be songs such as "As Tears Go By" by Rolling Stones, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" by Dusty Springfield, "Runaway" by Del Shannon, "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young, etc.
Thanks in advance. |
"He Was A Friend Of Mine"
Bob Dylan "This Guys In Love With You" Bacharach |
"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams.

Peggy Lee -- "Is That All There Is?
"If that's all there is, my friend, then let's keep dancing. Let's break out the booze and have a ball, if that's all ....... there is. " Simon and Garfunkel were good at melancholy, too: "Sounds of Silence,' "I am a Rock," "America," "Homeward Bound," "Richard Corey," and others. If you want to go back beyond the 50s a little, I highly recommend Billie Holiday's rendition of "God Bless the Child." |
I think the Eagles - Take it to the Limit qualifies as a mid 70s
song, and it's pretty mellow. I don't know and listen to many mellow songs, so that's as best as I can do :P |
Beatles - "Hey Jude" and "Yesterday"
|
hmmm...
Operator - Jim Croce All By Myself - Eric Carmen If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot All I have to Do is Dream - the Everly Brothers It's Too Late - Carole King Angie - The Rolling Stones |
New sad songs are great as well. "I Do" by Jude is an extraordinary example.

Joe Jackson -- Be My Number Two
Won't you be my number two Me and number one are through There won't be too much to do Just smile when I feel blue And there's not much left of me What you get is what you see Is it worth the energy I leave it up to you And if you got something to say to me Don't try to play your funny games on me I know that it's really not fair of me But my heart's seen too much action And every time I look at you You'll be who I want you to And I'll do what I can do To make a dream or two come true If you'll be my If you be my number two |

Oh yeah, "I Wish it Would Rain," by The Temptations. It was later covered by a lot of other people later, but the original version is best, I think.
