Alice Cooper

I think that everyone I talk to thinks that Alice Cooper is some hard-core rocker. I don't think so... I think that there are harder bands out... for example: Korn, Ozzy... but why did Alice Cooper get this reputation... I'm only 18 and I didn't live through when Alice Cooper was more popular... I don't know why hes got this reputation but I'd like to hear what people have to say....

PS: Hes coming to columbus and I'm definately going to see him

pan6467 03-17-2004 08:11 AM

Alice was and is a GREAT ARTIST. His concerts are among the best I've ever seen (and I've seen Floyd, Mccartney, Stewart, the Stones and so on).

I think Alice's "label" was put there by some of the freakish things he did in the 70's. He was the first to turn his concerts into theatrical shows, often with violent undertones (not many others guillotined women and babies on stage). He was hardcore and pushed the envelope.

As he has said Alice is not evil, Alice is someone that just can't be trusted.

Not really the answer you were looking for I suppose but Alice is original, and so over the top, that in a label happy world where everything is labelled "Hardcore" is the only thing that fit.

WHEN IS HE COMING TO COLUMBUS, I'D LOVE TO SEE HIM AGAIN??????? COLUMBUS OHIO RIGHT?

God of Thunder 03-17-2004 08:51 AM

Alice was the original "Shock Rocker", long before Marilyn Manson and the others. His music isn't really heavy, but as pan6467 pointed out, his stage show is.

"Alice" is the stage persona, the freak, the guy you wouldn't tkae home to mom. Be prepared to be entertained. The show is great from what I've heard. (I'm jealous pan6467)

Quote:

"Originally, there was a band called Alice Cooper led by a singer named Vincent Damon Furnier. Under his direction, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all coordinated by the heavily made-up Furnier."
Taken from his bio at allmusic.com

The "band" broke up, but Vincent went solo and adopted the name "Alice Cooper" and continued the wild stage show.

I'm only 20 years old, so I feel the same way as Streak_56 on this one. When he is interviewed now, he seems like a tame, intelligent musician who knows his shit. But not a hardcore rock and roll crazy man :)

I guess it's from the stage shows like previously mentioned

shakran 03-17-2004 11:14 AM

If you can get ahold of it, watch the episode of the Muppet show with Alice Cooper as the guest star. You'll never view the muppets the same way again :D

He is actually, he keeps his on-stage and off-stage personas seperate. He's actually a hell of a golfer too. He has played in and won several celebrity tournaments.

Charlatan 03-17-2004 12:17 PM

He used to be the wild and crazy guy off stage but the alcoholism caught up with him and after too many mornings of throwing up blood he finally got the message and sobered up...

His music is about as hard core as say Led Zepplin or Black Sabbath. In the early 70s hard core like Metallica, Korn, etc. and the truly nasty aspects of Punk hadn't even happened yet.

As others have noted, it was all about the stage show.

Kaos 03-17-2004 12:36 PM

Alice Cooper has influenced countless other musicians and bands, and including his amazing elaborate stage shows, his lyrics and music were groundbreaking and pure genius.

He is still my favourite artist of all time and I have a tattoo of the cover of Welcome to My Nightmare on my arm :)

Quite true. What the original poster is lacking is PERSPECTIVE. In the early '70s nobody'd seen anything like Alice before. Sure there was Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, but those guys never staged their own executions. People were shocked by Alice Cooper because they (at the time they were more than just the lead singer) were doing something unique.
As far as musical heaviness goes, you have to remember that heavy metal, as a genre, was in its infancy. The heavy guitar sounds pioneered by some bands in the '60's was just now becoming seperate from mainstream rock-n-roll, thanks to artists like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper.
And yeah, Alice Cooper isn't the wild man he was back in '72. We all mellow with age, and Alice knew his addictions were killing him. If he'd remained the party-man he was then, he'd probably be a doddering burnout like Ozzy.

Recommended: Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits to start.
Individual albums - Love It To Death, Killer, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome to My Nightmare, The Last Temptation, Brutal Planet
Avoid - Flush The Fashion (a bizarre attempt at New Wave), Trash (unless you happen to like hair-metal), Dragontown (Alice's evangelical Christian side gets the better of him).

hawkeye 03-17-2004 03:37 PM

All Alice Cooper is awesome, IMO, but I would also reccomend that you check out Brutal Planet, Last Temptation, and the Eyes of Alice Cooper, I would say that they, especially Brutal Planet, are the hardest of his material.

It kills me to say it, but I think Dragontown was Alice's weakest effort. Flush the Fashion certainly was "off", but after the amazing and heavy Brutal Planet, Dragontown was a bit disappointing. Best songs off it was the title track, "Dragontown" and "I Just Wanna Be God"

Killer is a definitely must hear (Halo Of Flies is genius), along with Welcome To My Nightmare (My 2 personal favourites). And Love It To Death with The Ballad of Dwight Fry. Hell, I could list his whole catalog.

Streak...I will try to get a picture of my tat and post it :)

any chance we could see it? i'm going to be getting a tattoo, and was seriously thinking of getting a pic of alice. i'd love to see how that turned out.

hey stoopid was also a great album.

Kaos 03-22-2004 08:43 PM

Alright, it's not the best picture and I was getting another tattoo covered.

Hmmm, I've had it for over 10 years and looks like it's time to get it touched up.

I had the tattoist add Alice's makeup to the tattoo to make it more original since Alice doesn't have the makeup on the album cover.

While I am not a big fan of his music, I am a HUGE fan of Alice Cooper. I live in Phoenix, where he lives, and have met him in business situations and at charity functions. He is really a very nice guy and a class act. I also love the corned beef sandwiches at his restaurant Alice Cooperstown in downtown Phoenix. If you come to Phoenix, you should at least stop into Cooperstown for lunch or a drink or two. :)

Prince 03-22-2004 11:53 PM

Cooper is, above all, an artist. I wouldn't bother comparing him and Manson, the latter just doesn't come even close.

streak_56 03-23-2004 03:14 PM

Awesome Tat..... I need to get another too...... so many possibilities though

I think that sums it up perfectly. Sone would find it hard to think of Alice as an "artist" , but that is what he is. Everyone else is doing it for the shock value.

If you've ever seen any interview with him you'd see that Vincent is a seperate person from "Alice". The stage show is just that, a show.

Alice is the original...all others suck!!

That's messed up. I hosted the pic on my website that I have done nothing with in over a year and the pic worked fine before. Maybe try copy and paste the link into the address bar. I was getting the Tripod pic from the link in this thread too.

That did the trick.
