Oh man, too hard, but I must:

Styx
Yes
Rush
Genesis
Suzanne Vega

and I could go on, but these are the artists I started with when I first got into music

After the first spot this gets real hard, and i could probably edit it in a months time from now.

1. Talk Talk (late)

2. U2 (early'ish)
3. Jeff Buckley
4. Portishead
5. Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

From "Colour of Spring" and onwards, Talk Talk made some of the most impressive records ever recorded, IMO. One of the bands mentioned a lot on this thread; Radiohead, is deeply influenced by Talk Talk.

Wow.... picking my top five bands is like picking my five most favorite children ...and having a thousand kids.

OK, best way of doing this is by going by how much of a bands catalouge i have....

5. Radiohead
4. Gameface
3. Fugazi
2. Shudder to Think
1. Jawbox

...there you have it! Steeped heavily in DC Dischord 90's post-punk...

With the way music is now...It's probably easier to just name your favorite songs. There's so many bands out there that have great SONGS...but put too much filler on their albums. Anyway...here are my top BANDS:

Earth Wind & Fire

Led Zeppelin

Aerosmith

Huey Lewis & The News

Ben Folds Five

Honorable mention:

Rush

3 Doors Down

I don't see too many mentions of
Skynard (1 that I saw)
ELO (Also only 1 I've seen)
The Moody Blues
The Guess Who
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Blues Traveler (ha)

All those bands are great so add those to my Honorable Mentions list. Theres many more though.

Asta!!

Hey! I mentioned CCR! I guess I was kind of lazy and didn't spell it out, though. An amazing band...along with Styx!

I thought it was Dan who sung? Definitely an awesome band. Hmm kinda funny how my honorable mentions are better than my actual top 5. Heh.
