Go write some poetry you pussy. What irritates me the most about the entire emo lifestyle is that, the majority of these kids shouldn't have ANYTHING to complain about. Especially when you're at college. Jesus. HELLO! You're at fucking college. And you're NOT paying for it! What the hell's the matter with you? Go put on some normal clothing.

Argith. I hate emo. I never listened to much of the music, probably because none of the bands are good enough to pass under my scope. If they ever become good enough to be noticed, then they probably sold out.

I like a lot of emo music, but mostly hip hop. And music is about making a statement about a moment or a feeling, not offering people a design for life: I like to listen to Mobb Deep for example, but it doesnt make me want to go out and shoot people.

I consider music lyrics to be a form of poetry. And besides that, couldn't I say the same thing about poetry? Go play some music you pussy...

Yeah, I agree that most mainstream emo sucks. You have to search deeper to make a more sound judgement on the style. There are some good emo bands, and they all don't fit the basic mold, in my opinion.

A few good emo/screamo bands, IMO, are:

Engine Down
Matchstick Romance
Sunny Day Real Estate
Copeland
Brand New

There are obviously others, but the bottom line is that you have to search farther than the radio or MTV to find good bands, emo or whatever.

Mainstream emo sucks. Some underground emo is tolerable, but as soon as it is processed by MTV and regurgitated back to the masses of "troubled" teens, it goes straight downhill. I dig all the listed bands too.

i've never understood the need to label music by these meaningless terms like "emo", "punk", "pop"...
It's all music.
Just take each band/song for what it is.

Exactly. I know some people who won't listen to bands because they're "emo" or "punk" or whatever. "oh, they're that new emo band. I hate emo. I'll never listen to them." Fine then. Be closed minded and not give it a try

I have no real problem with some good underground "emo" bands. The list that was posted earlier had some pretty decent bands, take Brand New for example. I have liked them for a while and I think one of the big reasons is because they write lyrics that could be catchy and make you think but at the same time be emotional and filled with heart. BUT! When bands start singing like:

"You stepped on my black framed glasses and untwined my favorite sweater as my heart cried tears of pain on my notebook filled with lines of misery because your gone"

Im gonna have to say "Im Rick James Bitch" to that shit and shove their tight pants into their tighter asses. Quit bitching about some ugly whore and go listen to DEICIDE! ROCK!

Hell fuckin' yes. I agree ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.

I'd also like to add that I hate ALL Emo people. The music (the underground stuff) is tolerable, but emo people themselves are so full of themselves. WAKE UP. YOUR LIFE ISN'T ANY WORSE THAN MINE. GET YOUR OWN CLOTHES.

Emo is basically a new buzzword applied to a style of music that has been around for a very long time. Theres nothing new or even different about it. Its been given a name now, along with a dresscode for the lost, and bewildered teens who feel the need to define themselves with a strap on identity. *Shrug*.. every "genre" of music that appeals to kids has this "problem" (punk, rock, hardcore etc). Theres some good music out there that many would label as emo, but I just consider it good music. Of course the other 99% of music out there labeled as Emo is pure crap but the kids listen to it anyways because its called Emo. Whatever.

And just my personal opinion... all you emo boys wearing skin tight girly jeans... you look rediculous!! We got rid of those after the 80's. Different strokes for different folks i guess.:/

And has anyone else noticed that somehow bands that very clearly arent Emo, are getting labeled as Emo just because Emo fans listen to them? Annoying.

everything ever written by any musical artist is emo, emo is short for emotional music, and to write any song you have to be feeling an emotion to write it

I agree but i'd like to expand on the idea of the thread's owner. Every band that picks up a guitar and is popular is a pop band with guitars and Emo is what it wants to be. It bothers me when bands get labeled.

Emo rules, it just doesnt rule for everyone.

The cool thing about emo is its sincerity. When you hear the guy from sunny day real estate singing, he sounds honestly miserable. That is a nice change from all the fake emotions of boy bands and others. Unfortunately, Emo got really popular and so now there are alot of less than sincere bands, who are also less creative, and the genre becomes a charicature of itself.

Fans of Emo, and Enemies of Emo alike should go to emogame.com for a good laugh.

Can some people name some 'mainstream' Emo bands? Some one mentioned AFI, personally I like them, but not sure what other bands would/wouldn't fall in that category. Would Dashboard Confessional, Simple Plan fall into Emo?

AFI being emo? I am just not seeing that.
Is it because he sounds sad when he sings or because he sings about death and such? Not exactly emo IMO.

I feel the same way. I'm a HUGE Dashboard fan, but I do get funny look at their shows. The last one I went to I was probably the oldest person there (I'll be 26 in 2 days) who wasn't a Mom or Dad bringing their kid along. I didn't have a trucker hat, I wasn't wearing a cool unknown band's t-shirt.

Gladly I also wasn't moshing. People who mosh at a Dashboard show should be beaten. It just makes no sense.

moshing.. dashboard confessionals..? what? you have to be kidding me.. Their music is so not mosh music.. probably little kids who just wanted to push people around..

But one of the perks of being 21+ at shows is some of the venues around here have 21+ only areas, like the House of Blues. I'm only 20 so I can't get up there just yet =(.

EMO doesn't exist. It is now a marketing tool. EMO USED to mean something and was more or less a bit of a punk slur. A short-cut when it came to describing the hardcore scene evolution. Late 80's/early 90s.... but has no connection to what the word is being applied to nowadays.

Listen to Rites of Spring(short-lived DC band) and tell me if you think that is EMO. ...then come back to your teacher drown_with_me, and I will quiz you properly.

That was basically it. And not to be picky, but its Confessional

The 2nd opening act of that concert was MXPX. I may have that wrong... Anyway, they were more mosh worthy. Personally I thought they sucked. The lead singer was all "Are you ready to rock?" Shut up and sing for cryin out loud....

No music lables exist. They are all marketing tools. For every musical label, you'll find an act that's pushed into it that doesn't belong.

Alright guys, I don't want to bring this topic up but it is a pretty hot topic for me:

Some emo is tolerable, yes, but to say you hate it because it is classified as "emo" is very closeminded. I first heard emo music when brand new first came out (I listened to them before they got popular). Anyways, I am not some uber depressed teen or anything, I just like the music. Confused? Whatever, I will show you a reason I like emo (specially brand new) the lyrics:

"So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish
I've seen more guts in eleven-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
and again when your head goes through the windshield "

a line from Brand New's "70x7"

It seems to me that even though emo is becoming pretty huge right now, there are many different forms that exist within the "genre", if you can call it that.

Theres the pretty cheesy stuff, like all-american rejects, and some Dashboard stuff, but the emo-core music, which is more like hardcore music blended with emotional topics and such...that stuff is rockin'. Bands like Thursday and Coheed and Cambria have done a damn good job blending emo with hardcore and other genres

"emo" is a moronic and terribly overused (and innacurate) term for a huge spectrum of music. people automatically assume when a band is tagged as "emo" they're a bunch of whiny kids who sing about losing girlfriends and slitting wrists. in actuality, a ton of bands get that title for no real reason and rash generalizations are made about the content of their music. take thursday for example, they have just about NO songs about "losing girlfriends" as it were and at the same time are one of the first bands mentioned when "emo" is bought up.

that being said there are a lot of "emo" bands that i love and a lot that i hate. you can't just say you hate the entire genre, because that makes no sense. i like a lot of the heavier "emo-core" bands (another moronic discription of a genre) like glassjaw, thursday, from autumn to ashes, desaparecidos, and others.
