I got paid for buying overpriced music!

Anybody remember this?

Music CD Settlement Article (snopes.com)

I signed up for this a while ago, just for the hell of it.

Today I got a check for $13.86 from "CD MAP Antitrust Litigation" based in MN. No clue why it came out to $13.86, and it certainly doesn't reflect how much I've probably overpaid in CD prices over the past 14 years, but still, it's nice to get a check!

absorbentishe 02-24-2004 08:07 AM

Got my check yesterday!! Still not enough to buy a new cd, but the industry got dinged big time. Now, what to spend the 13.86 on...

Cynthetiq 02-24-2004 08:11 AM

awww.. damn.. i don't remember when i sent mine in or what address i used. I think i used my Long Island address and my old parents address in Cali.

:) just think you can't even buy a CD with the settlement monies.

God, that's depressing. :(

Bill O'Rights 02-24-2004 08:21 AM

Yep...I got mine yesterday, as well. And yes, the irony that I can't even buy a CD with it was not lost on me. I should imagine that the reason that the amount was so low is the number of people that responded to the suit. With X being the dollar amount of the settlement, and Y being the number of people to write a check to...X / Y - (attorney's fees) = a whopping $13.86. Oh well, $13.86 is $13.86.

brianna 02-24-2004 08:55 AM

hell i expect like $5 -- $13.86 was a pleasent surprise.

Nefir 02-24-2004 10:41 AM

Hmm I remember signing up for that settlement deal... Never got anything though. Who knows, maybe there's a check waiting for me when I get home.

$13.86 is not much, but it can keep me fed for a couple of days, and lunch is always a welcome freebie. :D

Jasmar 02-24-2004 07:10 PM

CD Anti-Trust case

Any one remember this from a while ago? If you had purchased a cd from around the late 80's to the late 90's you were entitled to a piece of the pie(I think they said around $20) if you registered with the site. Well I got me a check for 13 bucks today, anyone else get one?

anleja 02-24-2004 07:43 PM

I got mine. I read about it and registered. Nice surprise when it came in the mail.

I told quite a few people that they should register their names on the site, but I doubt any of them did.

Perhaps I'll take my $13 to buy some blank cds. :)

lalalapi 02-24-2004 09:24 PM

Just got mine today as well, having completely forgotten about the whole thing. Good times.

dy156 02-25-2004 06:48 AM

I posted mine, but haven't gotten anything yet.

FoolThemAll 02-25-2004 07:32 AM

The vast majority of the CDs I buy, and I buy at least 2 a month, are under $10.

There's no such thing as an overpriced cd in high demand, anyway.

gilada 02-25-2004 09:26 AM

got my check, depositied it yesterday. I think I'm gonna get a kick ass sammich with it.

moonstrucksoul 02-25-2004 10:43 AM

thirteen bucks. . . .not alot of money, but i suppose that wasn't the point of making them pay millions to thousands of people, it was to say "We're not gonna take it" and pay your absurd prices anymore.

jvwgtr 02-25-2004 12:05 PM

I just got mine today, too...$13.86.
I was totally surprised--I completely forgot about it!
No complaints, every little bit helps!

mirevolver 02-25-2004 03:13 PM

I got my $13.86. Off to buy a CD and let the cycle continue.

buclao 02-25-2004 03:49 PM

I got it yesterday. Surprised me too because I had forgotten about it.

Bobaphat 02-25-2004 04:02 PM

Got mine as well. Not going to buy a cd with it, because its not enough. Now that we've Sued, what's our recourse? We have to take the price gouging we are getting. Whatever. This will pay for almost 2 days worth of bus rides for my girl and I...

JazzmanAl 02-25-2004 04:24 PM

Seriously, though, did the music industry drop the price of CDs any because of this lawsuite? I haven't bought one in a long time so I really don't know. It doesn't seem like the price has gone down any, though. I guess I just don't understand the point...

MSD 02-25-2004 08:02 PM

I hope mine gets here tomorrow. I'll use the money to see Opeth live on Saturday, I figure I'll give back to the band what was taken from them in the first place.

Jam 02-26-2004 12:14 AM

umm this is the old price fixing thing?

i think the riaa should be taken down.. maybe theyll give me money in ten years since thier making so much off of suing people... all these people settling are settling for way more than they would ever spend on music... this shit is just a way for the riaa to get money i hope that racketeering countersuit wins

Junchbailey 02-26-2004 06:00 AM

I got my check a few days ago too. I had completly forgot about it, so it was a nice little surprise for me.

Frowning Budah 02-26-2004 05:03 PM

I got mine. Wish I gotten the slice the lawyers got instead.

nothingx 02-26-2004 07:53 PM

I just got mine in the mail today! Sweet. I wanted to post a picture of it here, but I can't attach images in this fourm.

Update: Well, unfortunately the money is gone already. On the other hand, I got pizza and beer courtesy of the RIAA! Woo hoo!

SiNai 02-26-2004 11:53 PM

Good enough for (almost) another overpriced cd!

/me opens his ftp...

Yeah, it isn't too much money, but its a day or two of food, or 1/6 of the way to a Barton 2500+ for my computer :D

02-27-2004 02:32 PM

I had to take a minute and give a shout out to quadro2000...
I was moments away from throwing my check away when I remembered this thread and realized what it was...
It was about 3 x 5 and folded shut and it looked nothing like a check. more like junk mail... $13.86 isnt much but every little bit counts...
I wonder how much the trial lawyers got... They probably just got a check for $13.86.... Yeah... Thats probably right....

Begora21 02-27-2004 03:29 PM

got my check today also ... I'll take it ..... I figured that was just some lame mass email and forgot about it

wakelagger 02-27-2004 07:35 PM

They probably want it to look fake banking on the fact that you won't cash it so the companies don't have to pay up. Bastards.

tronims 02-27-2004 09:11 PM

Can't believe it actually went through, if it went below $10 per person they were going to just invest the money in music programs, glad that it went to me instead.

God of Thunder 02-29-2004 02:48 PM

Kind of ironic that the amount of the settlement isn't even enough to buy a new CD.

ktthequeen 03-01-2004 11:57 AM

I signed up. ANd used my old college address. And didn't leave an address forwarding address when I moved.

Fuck.

monkeydriven 03-02-2004 08:48 AM

Got it...used it on two used CD's...that's how I beat the system...I only buy new releases in traditional record stores. All other music is bought at Used stores so the RIAA doesn't get any of my $$

Dano069 03-02-2004 10:49 AM

My wife and I both got a check for $13.

merkerguitars 03-03-2004 10:43 PM

hopefully when i get back home it'll be waiting for me from the mail :D then will and i can go cd thrift. ha.

thezel 03-04-2004 03:40 PM

If you are not going to do anything with the check then maybe you can donate it, DonateMyMusicCheck.com which is taking donations from CD price-fixing settlement check recipients for the Electronic Frontier Foundation(http://eff.org/), which is fighting for the rights of music downloaders and those being prosecuted.

rabidgoomba 03-04-2004 06:39 PM

I'm gonna spend my $13.86 on donating to the good cause of a P2P service. Thanks RIAA! :p

ReggErving 03-04-2004 10:06 PM

Put it in the bank and will buy another CD.

greyeyes 03-05-2004 01:15 AM

I had forgotten that I had registered but I still recieved my check in the mail yesterday. great feeling get money that you weren't expecting.

Pragma 03-05-2004 06:08 AM

I got my check a few days ago - I plan on cashing it and buying a used CD at a local store.

edmos1 03-05-2004 03:29 PM

just got mine, I told my Fiance to sign up for it, but she did not, now I am going to blow my $ 13.86 on who knows what, I can go crazy with that.

User Name 03-05-2004 04:55 PM

How does one prove that they indeed purchased a CD during the eligible time period? Did they ask for a receipt?

MSD 03-05-2004 07:35 PM

Where's my fucking check?

Kaos 03-05-2004 08:03 PM

So nice of them to offer it ONLY to Americans

Us Canadians are paying 19.99 - 25.99 per CD + our outrageous taxes.

phredgreen 03-07-2004 06:19 PM

gorilla 03-11-2004 05:39 PM

I got mine awhile ago... spent it the day I got it... I'd forgot about it completely, so getting almost 14 bucks was awesome! Though I've definately spent more then 14 bucks more then I should have had to on CDs

aarchaon 03-17-2004 04:16 AM

I wish I had nearly $14. I could buy a car, yacht, house and a family.
