It really depends... Jones Beach Amphitheater is GREAT for some bands, but other bands just don't work there... same thing with Hammerstein Ballroom, Roseland Ballroom, Irving Plaza, etc...
All in all, I'd say Jones Beach Amphitheater (Wantagh, NY) is my favorite, followed by Hammerstein Ballroom (NYC), and then Hartford Amphitheater (where do you think?).

depends on the band. I can't see going to a Jimmy Buffet concert in an arena, I just doesn't fit. However, blues or jazz is at it's best in small, smokey clubs. Big power rock bands really shine at arenas.
Over all, I prefer bluesy rock played at small, smokey clubs. |

It'd surely be a club. A smaller, more intimate venue is usually best. It seems like the bigger the venue, the more likely the sound will be bad.
Also, at smaller clubs, the artists are more apt to hang out with the crowd. Of course that may have something to do with the fact that smaller, lesser known bands are more likely to play the smaller venues. But, anyway, that's my fav. |

small theatres are the best. I saw the Deftones there when they first started back in '97. Its great because the bands interact more with the crowd. I managed to work my way up to the stage, and Chino jumped into the crowd, right on top of me. I reached up and held the microphone while he sang into it. One of the best concerts of my life.

Hands down, small smokey clubs. I want to bump into the band members, I want to shoot the shit and have them accessable.
I still like bands if they're playing areana, but I won't go see them.

Bogarts, Cincinnati, Ohio. This place is the shiznit when it comes to concerts. Its a small venue, but its more like a hall than a club.

Depends on the band
If it's the Strokes or some kind of indy or electronic group, a club is great. If it's Radiohead, you gotta be in the front row of a huge venue. If it's Phish or any other 'jam' band, I prefer they play a sound proof room far far away from me.
