I'm in a band where our guitarist and bassist recently upgraded their gear, and now they're playing through Mesa Boogie F-100 and a big Mesa Boogie Bass 400+. I absolutely love the sound we're getting. At first we were looking into Orange and Matamp, but the guitarist didn't like the dual channel sound of Orange.

I couldn't be happier with the sound, but I've been wondering what other people like and why...

What is your favorite amp sound? What do you have that gets you going, or what do you drool over? What is it about the sound that you love?

Do you think we were fools for not getting Orange?

I'm a Marshall guy myself but my other guitarist has an old Traynor Guitarmate that is an amazing tone machine...but not when he plays it!
He actually sounds better through an old Peavey!?! That thing is garbage if I put my Les Paul through it but with him on a strat it sounds good.

I like some of those old Peaveys! They may look like something you got at a garage sale for $15, but they have character. Back in high school our guitarist played through a Peavey bass amp, and it sounded surprisingly good. Its just a reminder that amps should be about sound, not looks.

I love nothing more than some old Fender tubes. I had a friend that had a '59 Bassman. I believe all the speakers were original. Sounded amazing for blues. I also like late 60s Twins. Very good for rock.

I haven't had that much experience with Amps, but the Marshall JCM2000 dsl 50, coupled with my ibanex RG prestige has the most gorgeous clear tone, and the crunch is really nice, the distortion isn't so severe as to drown out the tone, but you can crank it up for the noisy parts. Fender jazzmasters (are they called that?) sound top-hole too.

Amen. Fender tubes for me. I've got a Twin I run a TS-9 into and love the tone. If I could find a Bassman I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Fender reissued the Tweed '59 Bassman a few years back. I'm not sure if they are still in production or not. New they were pretty pricey, but I think you can find one for less than $500 on ebay.

Edit: Looks like I was wrong, they're still going to cost over $600 on ebay

it's all about what the situation calls for. blues = fender twin and strat and metal = les paul and a marshall or mesa boogie. i couldn't commit, so i have a les paul and a fender twin.

i'm looking for a nice bass map.
For practice but that could be used for little shows.
Looking for an amp with a nice bold sound but with lot of tone and that sounds good with pedal effects.

'71 Les Paul Deluxe running through a reissue 60 watt combo Fender Blues de Ville makes me smile everyday. Not much into crunch distortion. Would rather have a clean overdriven sound.

And for those hoity toity jazz gigs that come up, sitting in front of a couple of Marshall stacks kinda takes away from the mood. But for getting down and dirty, sweating and ripping, more than enough to bring the house down.

And funny thing too, my effects board is magic with the Fender but when I run it through a Marshall (JCM signature Slash model anyways) the effects barely come through. Go figure. The whole board gets overriden except for the tuner.

Bogner Shiva 210, closed back w/ reverb. Best sounding amp ever, IMO.

Smokes any Marshall, Fender, Mesa, and can hang w/ Matchless, Dumble, Naylor, etc. any day. Especially when used with a guit w/ quality single-coil p-ups.

I know there's a lot of players out there who have a strong dislike (dare I say "hate"?) for modeling amps.

But I ain't one of 'em. I've been using a Line 6 Flextone II XL combo for three years. I love, love, love it! It's great to have so many tone possibilities right there in one amp.

I use a guitar that I built from leftovers and I also use a Telecaster. With the Flextone, I've created specific rhythm, lead, clean, etc tones for each guitar. Now I don't have to worry about trying to "fix" the amp settings on the fly, since everything's programmed and saved on the amp.

The Flextone's line-out is also great for direct recording or feeding a P.A.

It just sounds great!!!!

before the pricks stole my guitars.......i used to run my bass through this peavy bass amp......with 4 10''s in it.

kicked good and hard.




and the guitar amp is a good 'ol kittyhawk.........crunch city if you want or crystal clean.



and the speakers that go with it........4 10"s as well.



alot of beer stains on these guys.


i figure the older and nastier they look.....the better they sound.


and it's all about the sounds you like anyways right?

Personally I would take a Mesa Boogie MK.IV. Great sounding amps for punk and metal.

But I have also played through some old Fender Bassmans... and those things have a killer blues tone.

...and costs more than the three combined. For someone on a college student budget: get a used Laney. I paid $300 for my GH100L. Great cleans, and overdriven it can stand against any Marshall, easily getting into Slayer/Wylde territory.

I play a fender hot rod deville with a rickenbacker 360 and a vox valvetone overdrive.

Great fuzz and, of course, absolutely gorgeous clean sound.

for heavy overdrive, you gotta love the marshall JCM9000 (I think that's the model)
