Best Hip Hop in 2003

looking for some more good hip hop to listen to. not looking for any particular categories, just something that people think is worth either paying for or taking the time to download.

i'll go ahead and put a few of my favorites of this past year:
Little Brother - The Listening: All the hype around 9th Wonder is much deserved. Don't forget Phonte and Big Pooh though. Almost like Black Star but more playful, less serious.
Soul Position - 8 Million Stories: RJD2 is God. Blueprint's nice too, though he comes off a bit nasaly on a few tracks. 'Share This' is terrific, easily the album's best.
Outkast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below: This one's probably been covered several times over so I'm just gonna say, TLB beats Speaker, though it's close.
Science Fiction - Walls Don't Exist: Bought it recently and it's pretty good, deserves a few more listens. Instrumental hip hop is blowing up and Science Fiction is up there (below RJ and Shadow though)

anyways, post some of your favs from the past year

i could never get into aesop rock that much. he's got some great early stuff (daylight and how to be... come to mind) but other than that, production is too bizarre and i don't like his rhymes that much. 1135 is a good song, i like lif better than him though

Aesop Rock and Prefuse73 DEFINETLY

Atmosphere - Se7en's Travels
Jay Z - The Black Album
Jedi Mind Tricks - Visions of Gandhi
OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

Those are some albums that I thought were worthy of being some of the best rap in 2003.

I'm definitely gonna get that Prefuse73. Though right now, I'm leaning toward the Cunninlynguists album more so. I've heard a lot about Dizzee Rascal but i'm not sure what he's like. Can anyone fill me in?

another vote for the Outkast album... it may not be anything incredibly thought provoking or especially ground breaking, but those boys know how to make some damn good party music... ain't nothin' like a *good* pop song

follower of the child's crusade?

Dizzee Rascal is a cross between UK garage and hip hop; its basically rap over Garage beats with an East London attitude.

Buck 65's album was nice this year

Plus Sage and Joey Beats dropped a great record

Outkast out out another classic

Jedi Mind Tricks came out with a great record

Fiddy blew up

i've liked all of lyrics born's stuff off of the blackalicious albums, but i heard that "later that day" doesn't quite compare. something about superfluous singing. but i guess i'll go find some tracks from him, and dizzee rascal. thanks. also, if you follow the quannum (sp?) crew, any thoughts on the lifesavas "spirit in stone" album? loved the single hellohihey and their appearance at the end of one of the tracks of "blazing arrow" was impressive.

btw, i think talib kweli and mr lif both dropped in 2002. unless you mean the sleepy heads cd by lif, which really wasn't a full length. though i wouldn't mind seeing new albums by both. i phantom is great and while quality wasn't as good as i hoped (not up to blackstar or reflection eternal standards), was still great

OMG THANK YOU!!!!

I was just shaking my head at some of these. I'm sorry, but it irks me that people don't know the difference. SERIOUSLY! I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm glad you did!

As for me, I'd have to say, even though I don't like him as a person... as a producer, song writer, and artist, he's amazing...

Tha R'uh; Kels; The Pied-Piper....

Robert "R." Kelly himself.

Come on, with hits like Ignition, Ignition remix, Snake, Step In The Name of Love, Thoia Thoing, and all 50 of the collabo's he had with artists, it's clear that R. Kelly un-doubtedly succeeded with managing to get back on the public's good side by releasing tracks that people love to groove to. His ass is a chester, but his music is the shit.

yeah, i don't quite get it either. as to my understanding, rap's the same thing as hip hop music. of course, hip hop also encompasses other stuff, like djing, breakdancing, and graffiti. if someone could explain what the difference is, it'd be much appreciated

When you think of the term 'rap', think 'radio'. When you think 'hip hop', think 'not much of it on radio'. I recommend for all you hiphop heads (who don't already know about it), check out hiphopsite.com.

BTW: sorry for the double post TFP'ers
