Black Dahlia Murder.
I'm not sure where their site is but they're a kickass Death Metal band out of Detroit. Their lead singer carries a sword on stage from what I've heard. Their music is as good or better than any scandinavian death metal band, just brutal and awesome. certainly worth a dl.

Flatlined.
All the band members used to work at a bottle redemption place down the street from me. They have long since broken up(although there was a reuniun show last year). They released 2 CDs I think, both very hard and very good. Im from Western MA which has a ton of bands popping up around here. The most notable one is STAIND...find their first album Tormented. It is nothing like what you thought STAIND was...so much harder. http://www.themusicseen.com/bands.htm This site is a little old but has some good bands and some info about them. The up and comer on that site is Split Shift...I think they just got a major record deal recently. That's what's around my area...hope that helped any

As I Lay Dying (super fast kick drums)
Every Time I Die (good metalcore) Luddite Clone (brutal grindcore) The End (fucking metal/grind/screamo lunatics from Canada) Dresden Nocturne (found these guys a few months ago, good metalcore) Haste The Day (hardcore) Ion Dissonance (anger infusing metalcore) HEWHOCORRUPTS (corporate-core) Some of these are more underground than the others, but I'm a big fan of them all.

so this thread can be as useful to you as possible, what underground metal bands are you already into? i'll forge ahead with some suggestions regardless...
shadows fall (old-school thrash + metalcore) mastadon (almost-prog metal, but really heavy) killswitch engage (metalcore with a great sense of melody) lamb of god (heavy as hell) nevermore (mustaine produced their first album, which is about as good a recommendation as can be made for a metal band, i suppose) |

I second Ion Dissonance. If you're into "math metal," I'd also look into bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and Spiral Architect. Other bands I enjoy include Children of Bodom (not actually underground), Between the Buried and Me, and Shadowsfall. If you enjoy any Black Dahlia Murder, check out At the Gates. Very similar; some have come to bestow the moniker "xAt the Gatesx" upon BDM for their striking similarities, although BDM has a big following in the hardcore community because they're straightedge (shallow, if you ask me). Both, however, are good bands. Darkest Hour is another hardcore act that's been compared to many European metal acts, although I wouldn't invest in any of their albums. Most are extremely repetetive. Anyway, enjoy!
Oh yes, if you get any Nevermore, I would reccomend "Dead Heart in a Dead World" first. |

Lot of good bands listed here. One I didn't see was 40 Below Summer and Devil Driver. Devil Driver is the new band by the former frontman from Coal Chamber. I've seen both his bands in concert and I can honestly say I think Devil Driver might be the better band. A bold statement, I know, but if you get a chance and go check them out, I think you'll agree. A great website to get a lot of info on underground metal bands is <a href="http://www.shoutweb.com">http://www.shoutweb.com</a>.

Blackmarket Activities
Trustkill Ferret Metalblade Robotic Empire LifeForce Willowtip Eulogy Recordings State Of Grace Victory roadrunner (suppose people like the shit they put out hahaha i think it rocks that nickleback and killswitch engage are on the same label, fucking metal to the max men) Hopeless Those aren't bands as you probably noticed, but labels. If i typed the bands i know... Well you wouldn't be reading long enough to reach this closing statement. So there are a few (or more) labels for you to do your homework on, just google those labels and go to the bands section and you'll be a metal god soon enough haha. Good luck man. P.S. Underoath sucks, and zao, and all christian metal/core bands for that matter take the entire solidstate label for instance. But i have to admit, The Agony Scene tearrrrrrs it up for being christians Last edited by Hands.; 01-28-2004 at 05:18 AM.. |

Speaking of odd-timing and with respect to the original post, I'm gonna mention 7 Angels 7 Plagues. Check out Jhazmyne's Lullaby. Once you get used to the vocals, there's a wealth of melody and elusive timing to be found with them.
Reading back, KWSN mentioned that a lot of bands being mentioned are hardcore/metalcore more than they are straight metal. He's right, and although I don't wanna split hairs with some of you either, Bane and Shai Hulud lean more on an old school, youthcrew style of hardcore, rather than the stuff you hear today. Difference being that with some of Bane/Shai Hulud, things might start to sound punk rather than metal. These differences aside, I concur that they're both great bands. |

Cripple Mr. Onion.
I'm not really a metal fan... okay it'd be more accurate to say I can't stand 90% of metal, but I went and saw them play last night expecting them to be completely shit but was pleasantly surprised. While they had their share of hard-out thrashing it actually sounded okay and they had some cool quieter parts where they used some cool effects. Oh yeah, both the guitarists and the bassist (who was VERY good) play gigantic 8+ string instruments. www.cripple.co.nz for some mp3s

no offense to any dep fans here but i honest to god can't stand them. to me, they're nothing more than random, incoherent noise. but then again, that's only my opinion
