I reeaally liked this album.

Brand New Colony is my favorite song, but that whole album is really good.

I think they're alright, but i wish people wouldn't deify ben gibbard so much. I know people who don't like the postal service at all but love death cab for cutie and therefore must buy their album and go to their shows because they have to be loyal to ben... i think that's just stupid.

I only just heard of these guys on christmas from my gf in the states.. She sent me the lyrics to Such Great Heights, and it's a great song.. I'll have to listen to more of them and see what they're all about.

Definitely.

I think there was already a TPS thread on here but the disabled search function kind of makes that irrelevant.

Anyway, I'm proud to say I've bet Ben Gibbard and the rest of Death Cab, and they are really cool guys. They did a show at Nita's in Phoenix, and I got stationed on the back door. Also, I agree with other posters, the sound is sooo Seattle. I lived there before we moved to Phoenix, and TPS captures the mood there perfectly.

It's really good to see cool people be successful.

Give Up is a great album, and Transatlanticism is really good too, so long live TPS and Death Cab.

Oh yeah, if you've burnt out your copy of Give Up, or you just want more, try getting a copy of Dntels 'Life is full of Possibilities' the track 'The dream of Evan and Chan' is actually a TPS track. Also they remixed 'Do You Realize' by the Flaming Lips on the Lips EP 'Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell'

peace

I like the cd a lot. It's a shame that most of the "electronica" sounds like a 10 year old made it on a keyboard he got at a garage sale. I listen to it all the time, but it's hard to get other's interested when it's start going "boop be errr be boop"

From my experience I've found that everyone enjoys the cheerful beats, and absolutely love that "10-year-old-on-an-old-keyboard" sound.

On of my friends was complaining the other day about the lyrics in "I'm only sleeping," saying that they were so depressing, but the song itself sounds so peaceful. Can't please them all, I guess.

I really enjoy the singing and lyrics to boot...
and the backing music is good in it's own regard...
but I don't enjoy the two together at all... as far as electronic music for voice, there is MUCH better stuff out there (take Matmos, who does most of the production work for Bjork)

hmm

It's impossible for me to give an unbiased assessment of the Postal Service, because I'm fuckin' in love with Give Up. Jesus God, that's a good cd.

I grew up listening to 311, Metallica, etc, etc...but after I started to give up my baggy J'ncos and "witty" t-shirts (you know the type) in favor of vintage jeans, dress shirts, and messanger bags, I found that I was starting to appreciate more cerebral, calming music (although I still love the old stuff). The Postal Service has proven to be the perfect fit for my new tastes.

As for the strange samples and "10-year-old-on-a-keyboard" thing: I dig it. I think that the instances designed to sound like your speakers are shorting out, or that there's a hum or something in the equipment is brilliant. It may seem gimmicky but it works with their style.

That was the dumbest thing I've ever read. Thank you for that. Death Cab and The Postal Service are nothing like emo.

Here in Canada, no one knows about The Postal Service or Death Cab For Cutie unless you're pretty tight with Americans (i.e. worked at an american sleep-away camp).

For me, I heard about them through my fiance, but it took me awhile to get used to them, and actually start to like them.

Keep in mind, I'm a huge Ludacris fan.

illogan, how bout we keep the homophobia to a minimum, ok?

Yes, Death Cab is emo; they are the very definition of emo. They're still good. And The Postal Service is great, as is Dntel. Listening to Dntel as we speak, in fact.

I don't think you are going to last here very long with posts like that illogan.

But I do agree that it is emoish (with electronica to kick it up)... But I don't really care about the classifications much, I just love the album/group. Has anybody heard about any new stuff coming out from them?

good good album, ben's got two very good groups on his hands.
It seems he is putting most of his effort right now into Death Cab though.

I cant even remember now where I first heard of TPS, but I downloaded Such Great Hights after reading about them and loved it. Got the album and loved that too, I can see how some people could be put off by the simple electronic sound of it, but I just find it a really easy album to listen too...

Postal Service did their part to open the doors to indie dance. That being said, Out Hud, Boom Bip, and Brothers Past (whom, if you know what's good for you, you will check them out: www.brotherspast.com)

I love the Postal Service but absolutely detest Death Cab. People give me strange looks for this belief. I don't know what it is about Death Cab that grates against me so badly, I even hate Ben's singing for the band but I love it for the Postal Service.

Give Up is perhaps one of the best albums I have recently purchased along with Funeral by The Arcade Fire. The District Sleeps Alone Tonight is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a long time.

Whenever I start feeling a panic attack coming on, I crank up the PS. It's a nice way to chill out.

I'm not aware of any new albums for them, but I do know the new Death Cab is coming out album next month. I'm rather stoked for that.

As far as the question of whether or not either fall into the category of 'Emo' is tricky. Ben Gibbard certainly looks the part, however, if you study his lyrics, he shies away from the most typical Emo imagery "the midnights stars are burning the doves of my lonely soul." blah blah blah. And his guitar stylings actually aren't that close to stereotypical Emo, all I can really equate it to is the sound Seattle is producing right now. Call it what you will. It seems most often to be labeled 'Indie,' but people like to compartmentalize everything like that.

No strange look coming from me. I wouldn't go as far as saying that I detest Death Cab for Cutie, but I am not a fan. We saw them last night at Lollapalooza and I kept wishing that it was the Postal Service instead. I was hoping maybe he would get confused and throw one in. Oh well, no such luck.

It's definitely a GREAT album to tack memories to. I've got at least one set of memories for most of the tracks (some good memories, some bad).

So, did anyone read the article with Ben in Paste? It wasn't about TPS, it was more about DCFC (it also included interviews with the other members), but it was really a nice look into the life and recording style of Ben.

Plus, it came with a dvd that included a Postal Service music video.

I love their song "we will become silhouets(sp?). I think ben writes amazing lyrics which really suck you into the song. With transatlanticism and give up theyve kinda described melancholic music for me.

mmhmm... definitely love this cd. Such Great Heights is definitely my favorite song on there. The video for it is pretty cool too.

Hmm They remind me a little of Mates of State, but sounding a little less like they're on crack. If you like the Postal Service, you may enjoy Mates of State... little more "indie" though I suppose. Bah. Stupid labels.

Yep... that made everyone want to listen to them.
