Do the Strokes kick ass?
It is my stern belief that they do kick ass. Every single one of their songs is very listenable, so far. I am utterly amazed. As a youngster, I forced myself to listen to "grunge metal" or whatever it is called, like KoRn and LimpBizkit and what not (I'm still young, but you know...) I eventually realized that listening to such music hurts my ears, because it is loud and noisy and disturbing to my ears. The Strokes, however, have kick-ass beats and a kick ass singer and everything, all with the added bonus of not splitting my ears. Yup. I was disappointed when I bought the Queens of the Stoneage album, because the only two songs on it that kicked ass were "Go With The Flow" and "No One Knows". The rest of the album is... noisy and not very cool. The Mars Volta is also listenable, but that's not the point.
So, do The Strokes kick major ass or what? (hint, the results better be lop-sided in my favor :icare: ) |
I like The Strokes. Their first album was great but I haven't got around to buying the second one yet.
Ass-kickers for sure.
Yes, Virginia, The Strokes do kick ass.
You know, you might like The Cars -- at least their early stuff. Good songs that don't try to do anything unnecessary and are 3 minutes or less. |
Two people voted wrong. Why? Please correct this error.
not a big fan sorry
Don't really like them, but at times they have a neat guitar sound.
I like some of their stuff, but I don't see what all the big deal is about them. Just sounds like another garage band to me.
They suck. Along with all of the other "The" bands. Nothing original about them at all.

i like the White Stripes
Yeah, and The Mars Volta kicks ass, too. Where's K-Dub when... oh, nevermind.
I said no, but don't get me wrong. They are far less craptacular than most recent "rock and roll". Some of their songs are quite listenable, and most of their songs don't suck badly. Their only problem is that they are identical to the White Stripes, and a pale imitation of a half dozen better bands in the 80s. Still all credit for trying. Try harder.
Don't like the Strokes, so no, in my opinion they don't kick ass.
They definitley do not kick ass. They don't kick anything, but I hope their music kicks the bucket.
Sorry, didn't mean to be so harsh. But it was funny. |
Despite the anti-sentiment for The Strokes here on the TFP The Strokes ARE kicking ass on sales, not just radio play.
I like music that moves faster...way faster.

yeah TMV certainly do kick ass. I like the strokes but i hate the hype surroudning them 24/7 |
I'm lukewarm about The Strokes. I saw them live in Montreal when "Is This It?" came out and I asked myself the same question. I like their music, but not to the extent that I think they're revolutionary or truly "kick-ass".

Please explain how a 5 member band can be identical to a 2 member band? The singing, drumming, lyrics, style, etc are completely different. Maybe you were thinking of another band? The Velvet Underground maybe? Quote:
That said, I like The Strokes. And The Mars Volta. :) |
The strokes write some reasonably decent songs, but nothing I've never heard before. But their image really gets on my nerves. Their live sets are 30 minutes long. They look like they can't be bothered. Julian Casablancas sings like he's half asleep. And the music press are always pushing them as some kind of hard-living strung out methadone popping band from hell, and they're not any one of those things.
It's another case of the music media latching onto something completely mediocre and blowing it all out of proportion. |
Nope, just another cookie cutter MTV-brainwashed band for the masses.
I think The Strokes are a breath of fresh air in modern rock radio. It's refreshing to hear something that's not pop-punk, or rap-metal, or post-grunge, or *shudder* ....emo.
They may not be the most original band out there, but they put 99% of the stuff that gets major airtime to shame. I think it'll be interesting to see how they mature, and if future albums display a little more originality. Keep in mind, these guys are still really young. |
the strokes rule
I'm going to have to say the Strokes definitely kick ass, they've put out two quite strong albums and are just all around an excellent band.
There should be another poll:
"Do you hate The Strokes because they're popular? Yes/No" |

I like the strokes, I dont think they are quite as poplular as some people are saying. I don't hear them on the radio that often and I don't watch a whole lot of MTV, mainly because all the hip hop/rap, so I wouldn't know. Also if someone has a problem with sucking the corporate cock they should think about what they would do if they were in the situation. Everyone loves money and if you say you don't you are a liar. Everyone knows money makes the world go round ;)

Well, I would have to disagree with you on this one. Truth be told, The Strokes got their start playing every dive bar and crappy club in NYC before being discovered (and not by MTV). And since when does MTV play rock anymore? I thought it was P. Diddy, Brittney, and Clay Aitkens, 24-7. Any how, The Strokes aren't any great techincal band, but they do create some great pop songs that stick to a 3 minute rule. I think if they tried to make any epic 8 minute songs, they'd fail miserably. Its pretty obivous where their influences come from: Television, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, and The Cars. I'd rather have a band exude this sort of musical influence than a band like The Darkness who rely on Dio, Ratt, and Spinal Tap for artistic fuel. The Strokes aren't anything great musically, but they do have some catchy songs and exude that sort of disenchanted, underground attitude so popular with wanna-be punks and so desired with 16 year old girls. I just like them because they sound like the old NYC bands of the late 70s. |
i think the strokes have an awesome almost sparkley feel to their guitar riffs, i love them!
#5, take "less crapacluar than most" and run with it. How a 5 man band can sound like a two man band? That'd be style & production. They sure as hell sound identical to me. Much as Linkin Park sounds like Limp Bizkit with a touch of melody somewhere back there, and Pantera sounds like Gollum on nitrous (nothing wrong with that!)
Nah I dont really like them, musically and lyrically they are nothing special, and their sound is a bit too pop. I would not say that they suck, cuz they clearly can make some catchy songs.
I voted no. I've listened to them because my sister likes them, but I wouldn't buy any of their records or go to their show or anything.
No way. Not my thing. Just find them boring.
I wouldn't say they kick ass but they are pretty good.
Ugh, no thanks. I like White Stripes, but they have a completely different -- original -- sound.
A simple no, because they just aren't my kind of music I guess.
I find them rather boring. |
I have never heard of a more critically overrated band in my LIFE. I kept hearing "the Strokes are like *insert good band here*" and "the Strokes are reviving *insert description of genre here*". Christ, I heard like three of their songs, and it sounds like a drugged-out Ben Stein "singing" alongside the most repetitive guitar riffs I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. It's not that their guitar is technically more repetitive than say, death metal (although it actually is in a lot of cases), but the way they play actually accentuates the repetitivity of it. In short, I disagree and want to stab the Strokes in their collective eye, but respect your opinion.
