I agree, when I got home from Iraq I almost made a video about a friend that died with this song...

I definitely agree with a bunch of these. I've got quite a collection of depressing songs, but here are some of my favorites that might not have been mentioned:

The Point of It All-Amanda Palmer
Skinny Love-Bon Iver
We Are Nowhere and It's Now-Bright Eyes
Delicate-Damien Rice
King's Crossing-Elliott Smith (or any of his songs, really)
Doll Parts-Hole
Where Have You Been?-Manchester Orchestra
Broadripple is Burning-Margot & the Nuclear So-and-So's
Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt-Mewithoutyou
Sorrow-The National
Note to Self:-Owen
This Place is a Prison-The Postal Service
A Better Son/Daughter-Rilo Kiley
The Weary Kind-Ryan Bingham
World Spins Madly On-The Weepies

Hope this helps.

I am shocked no one has named Fleetwood Mac's "Sara" - I turn that on everytime I feel down.

"In the sea of love, where everyone would love to drown.
But now it's gone - it doesn't matter what for."

Also, if you all have never heard it before, Lita Ford's "War Of The Angels" is a fantastic song about suicide.

Nine Inch Nails - "Something I Can Never Have"

I still recall the taste of your tears.
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep anymore.

[Chorus:]
You make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I'm down to just one thing.
And I'm starting to scare myself.
You make this all go away.
You make this all go away.
I just want something.
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now.
This thing is slowly taking me apart.
Grey would be the color if I had a heart.

Come on tell me

[Chorus]

In this place it seems like such a shame.
Though it all looks different now,
I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look you're all I see.
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be.

Come on tell me

[Chorus]

I just want something I can never have

Oh, hell yeah....That one is D E E P.
I tried to get my band to play that one before but they were like, "We don't want people crying all over each other, we want them to dance!"

Hallelujah as done by Jeff Buckley is certainly on that list. I'm sure I have a couple dozen more on my old PC. I might have to boot it up and see what I can find!

I scoured all 10 pages to make sure someone else didn't mention this, but then again I may have missed it through blinking back all the tears.

How about Chris Mills "Keep the Corpse Beautiful" on his "Plays & Sings/Nobody's Favorite" album. (even the album art is depressing.)

A co-worker of mine brought the CD in, and there's even a warning on the damn packaging about how the music is specifically designed to bring you down! (I wanted to mention that last part more because I want to make it known that I don't make a practice of owning sad music. Life will get you down automatically; you don't need to give it any extra help, ferchrissakes!)

No kidding. I'd add pretty much anything by Radiohead. Their music videos must inspire nightmares.
