im trying to find the meaning behind "99 luftballoons, can anyone help?

It's about nuclear war. Basically, the singer and a friend are letting baloons fly off into the air. A military radar picks them up and mistakes them for incoming missles or whatnot. The whole world gets destroyed, except for Nena.

I think it had something to do with a german war protest or something.

Well, I've always believed that each balloon represented someone letting go of something, in a chaotic world full of uncertainties, and that the singer tied it all to what she had with her lover. The summer was drawing to an end and she was leaving the city and him for good, so she was doing what other had done before, which was letting go of her past and moving on.
The German version slightly differs from the American version, as it seems to pertain more to society at large, but my German's rusty. My 0.02$ Edit: I've just read the posts before and now the original version makes a hell of a lot more sense. |
Thanks guys.

Rockzilla's got in on Target. I saw an interview with Nena a long time ago, and that's exactly what she says. Just a Protest song. Nothing more.

There's an English version done by Nena herself and released in the UK; you can find how it compares to a translation of the German original here.

It's about balloons.

I'm really sorry to post this a second time in two days, but I can't resist...
