Dead Muscians - What would they be like now?
I was thinking about Jeff Buckley with this one. Basically this is for all the muscians who went way too soon. I often wonder what kind of stuff Jeff Buckley would be producing now or over the last 10 years or so. NO doubt it probably would have been great, just often wonder how his style would change etc.
Another musician is Syd Barret from Pink FLoyd. Although i believe he is not dead, imagine what Floyd would've been like if he was part of the band through the early 70's, maybe they woudln't done all the spacy soundscapes stuff and had a different style. Hendrix is another one who went to young as well (about 27), also Kurt Cobain, about the same age i believe? It would've been interesting to see how nirvana would change over the years? Which other muscians do you believe went too young or stopped too young and would love to see what they're getting up to nowadays. Also this isn't really about muscians naturally dying, and had a pretty full musical life. |

For me it's got to be Jim Morrison, definitely. I am lucky enough to own an original pencil drawing he drew (won it on an auction) but also have all the music the Doors ever made.
That man had conviction and made a real difference, something that you dont see a lot of nowadays.

Wes Montgomery comes to mind; he died at 43 back in 1968.

I believe Janis Joplin was just getting warmed up when she died at 27. Her first couple albums were good, but her last was a masterpiece.
Buddy Holly died at 22, if he lived he probably would've made a huge influece on popular music. Randy Rhoads was a good guitarist (understatement) dead at just 25. He'd be in his mid 40s now, I can only imagine what he could've done with all those years. (ages are approximate, so please be nice if I was a year off. 2 or more years off, then kick me.) also,
Cliff Burton - i bet he would've kept metallica on the straight and narrow trash metal path Shannon Hoon - Blind Melon put out some really good stuff, i even like Soup Tripping Daisy's signer - forget his name, but they were a great under-the-radar mid-90's alt band SRV - don't even get me started on where could've gone... depresses me everytime i think about his death |

Funny you should bring this up; I was thinking earlier today about Kurt Cobain and how Nirvana would have progressed, and wondering if the rock scene today would be much different if they were still around. There'd probably be no Foo Fighters for one thing, which would imo be a shame, but we might have a few more great Nirvana albums instead.

When you are a good musician (or author, or actor, or performer), and you die young, you instantly attain immortality.
If Paul McCartney had died immediately after the Beatles broke up, a lot of people would be asking these questions. Instead, they're saying things like "his current music sucks, he used to be so good." You'd probably be saying the same things about Lennon, Cobain, Morrison and Joplin. Because they never were given the opportunity to grow older and adapt themselves to their art at that age. Maybe that's why some of these artists killed themselves. Maybe they knew they would never be able to make it as high as they had before. There is also the chance that they would have faded into the background and you never would have heard them. Many more people heard of SRV after he died than before he died. If he was still alive, he'd be a brilliant blues player, but he wouldn't be on the pedestal we have put him on. He'd be in the ranks of Clapton, Buddy Guy, B.B. King - excellent musicians all, but not regarded as God. That being said, I constantly mourn the loss of Freddie Mercury, Keith Moon, and most recently, John Entwistle. Not that he died that young, and he did lead a very full musical life - but when I hear that the Who are going back into the studio, all I can think about is how the thunder will be missing. I also mourn John Lennon. I think about him often, and I wonder if maybe he would have dumped Yoko and eventually become a recluse.
