I think I will cry now...

Well I just heard Avril's Cover of Chop Suey. Jesus...Jesus..

So I ask you, have you heard any covers that were just really bad? If so, share your experiances. Now if you'll excuse me I have more crying to do.

EDIT: A thousand pardons if this was done before, I searched and couldn't find it.

The Gladys Night version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine." And there is that Don Henley song the Ataris cover.

I think I like more covers than ones I dislike. Sometimes I like the covers more.

Yep, that Avril cover was so awfully sad, she didn't even know the lyrics...

Anything Atomic Kitten releases is a half-arsed cover of a good classic song, I hate them more than anyone in the music industry. I wasn't too happy with DJ Sammy's take on Heaven either.

Why cover someon else's music? That has to do with the difference between being a listener and a musician. Then again, that is likely another debate altogether.

Rob Zombie, Trina, and Lionel Richie (from the original group) doing a cover of 'Brickhouse.' The Commodores were a great group with some amazing talent. What a shame.

Pat Boone's entire "No More Mr. Nice Guy: In a Metal Mood" album. I have it, and it is great for the cringe factor.

And Costello; I LOVE cover versions, when there is reinterpretation involved. Look at jazz; it is all about quoting your predecessors.

The worst cover that I've ever heard is Sheryl Crow's rendition of Guns and Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine".

Honorable mention to William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (actually it's so bad that it's almost good - lol), and Rod Stewart's rendition of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train".

What they did was turn that horrible 80s Tears For Fears garbage and make a really good rock/metal song.

love that song in the orginal version though.
and that recent "Boys of Summer" (or WTF it is called) cover is so godawful it makes me realise just that much more how good the proper version is.

I do like many, many jazz covers though. Always refreshing to hear a different perspective on a timeless standard like "In the Mood" or "That Old Devil Moon"

I am a musician. I write my own tunes and jam on em with a few friends. But when I just wanna take a break and have some fun cranking on a song its always someone elses. It gets boring in the studio when youre recording one song for 4-5 hours with no break. Just having fun with a cover tune is a great way to break up the monontony of it all. And those end up getting recorded as well.

The worst cover song Ive heard was the Avril version of Fuel by Metallica at Icon. That was terrible.

So many bad covers:
Avril's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"
Sheryl Crow "Mississippi" - technically recorded it before Dylan recorded it, but Dylan still wrote it.
Dave Matthews "All Along The Watchtower"
My last band's lead singer insisting we do a cover of Dave Matthew's version of "All Along the Watchtower"

so many bad ones.

Yeah I'm gonna have to go with...uh....NO....The original is fuckin great and they totally ruined it. I also can't forget to mention when Britney Spears did a cover of I love rock&roll for the movie Crossroads which was just pathetic and lastly Papa Roach doing a cover of Sweet Emotions by Aerosmith. How bad was it? Well they re-aired that episode of MTV ICON twice last month and guess which performance they left out both times? Yeah you got it.

I have to agree that the Ataris cover of "Boys of Summer" is a piece of crap. My nephew just played me his new favorite song "I Want Candy" which was poorly covered by some bubblegum popster and I had to inform him that it was a cover. He was crushed and I was gleeful. But the worst cover I've ever heard, is an atrocious band called Anal Cunt covering "Unbelievable" by EMF. It is painful.

I heard on the radio a band who did a cover of The Cure, I think the song was "In between days" but don't ask me the name of the band, I heard it only once and I don't listen the radio often. That is a reason why. Can't believe you can cover The Cure and logicaly think that your song is better and worth playing on the radio. A proof that more and more band and singer (I don't call them artist) have no inspiration what so ever. Just a good idea and a way to make quick money out of it.

You cannot forget Madonna's horrible coverof American Pie, by Don McLean. Most covers are not as good as the original, but some are inventive. The newest cover that I like is Johnny Cash covering Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails. I like the song, and the video is poignant, especially with the timing of his and his wife's deaths. Its also funny to hear NIN on country music television.

Lenny Kravitz's version of American Woman by The Guess Who was freakin aweful too. He sissed it the fuck out. It's supposed to be angry like AMERICAN WOMAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!! Not sound like a fuckin barber shop quartet. Some songs should just be left alone. And yes Madonna should be stabbed, allowed to bleed for a while, and then shot for ever attempting to cover a Don Mclean song. He's a genius, she is not. Matter a fact the only thing that even made the video airable was her fuckin ass crack....which I could care less about I'm not too fond of them.
