So Van Halen or Van Hagar?
We all know they were both great but which one did you like the band better with? I know with David the playing was faster and a little bit better and he was one hell of a showman, but I don't really care much for his voice or his songs for that matter. At least not what I heard at my young age I don't think he has a really great voice. I think Sammy has a fantastic voice and wrote much more beautiful songs. I believe it is noted that they had more hits and sold more records with him too. Also he made great solo records as well while we all know David didn't. Kinda would be a preference eh? Cause they were both so great and such a big asset to the band it would be impossible to argue over whether one was better or not when they were with the band so really it'd have to be who you liked more. I think I'm probably going to be the only one to pick.......my man......Sammy Hagar.
Dudes just awesome and he was a pretty niffty little guitar player too. http://www.musicimages.com/images/583-22g.jpg Sammy! Asta!! |
I thought they were a lot more fun with Roth. Hagar was decent, but I wouldn't listem to them unless they happened to be on the radio.
I liked David Lee Roth as the frontman, but not solo, and I like Sammy solo and not as a frontman.
I like both of them solo. "I Can't Drive 55" is one of my favorite songs. However, as far as their time in Van Halen, I've gotta vote for Diamond Dave. They rocked a lot harder then, and Roth was funnier than Hagar. The music was more about good times than anything else. :)
Van Halen, all the way.
There was an edge, astounding creativity to their music back then. |
David Lee Roth had many more hits with Van Halen than Sammy Hagar did.
I liked the fun loving attitude of Roth-era Van Halen, but I'm going to go with Hagar. I think the songs were just better.
Do I dare stir it up and admit to liking the Cary Cherone era Van Halen? |
Sammy is cool and stuff.... but David Lee Roth is the man. His voice and Eddie Van Halen's guitar were an awesome combination.
No question for me, I'm definitely a Roth man.

Sorry yall but Sammy Rocks. David was good in the day but Sammy is still the "Red Rocker"
Diamond Dave... ... he seems pretty strange nowadays though.. hehe.
Gotta say it is close...I liked both for their own reasons and always been a fan of the Red Rocker...but while Sammy is Sammy...Roth is still Van Halen
I liked Dave 'cause he had a sense of humor, and knew that it was all in fun. Sammy had no sense of humor, as far as I could tell. Gary, well, Gary just didn't fit, although Extreme's "Pornografitti" album was amazing.
I'm going to give the Grandma answer and say that I like them both equally.
I was always dissapointed, however, that Sammy was never allowed to do more guitar work with Van Halen. He did on stage, but not on the VH songs. Eddies ego got in the way and they never explored the possibilities of a two-guitar band. |
Van Halen with duelling guitars would have been amazing! I can't knock anything they've done, but having two lead players and only using one just seems like a waste of talent.
:) |
I like VH more for their music, esp. guitar work, than Vocals. So, I'm not too particular about who exactly is singing. I like sammy better as a solo artist, and he seems to be a genuinely friendly guy, as apposed to DLR's Assaholism.
van halen is all about guitar. the roth era stuff was better in terms of guitar work. i really do not like sammy's voice, and dave was not really a talented singer, but he seemed to fit with the style they played. as far as the two leads....eddie is awesome because he plays rhythm and lead at what seems to be the time. he'll be playing the rhythm and all of the sudden you hear harmonics and a some blistering riff and then a dive bomb and he playing rhythm again....another player would have just made it muddy sounding

Man I miss that band! |
Ah yes, Extreme.
The ladies loved it when we gave them a drunken taste of the harmonies on 'more than words' one new year's eve... As a frontman, I've heard Sammy makes a wicked tequila. |
Van Roth... But since he wasn't a choice i'd have to say Van Hagar.
Van Halen with DLR. Never cared much for Sammy.
I always liked the songe with Sammy more. Dave was all right, but he was a raging dick, and Sammy's got the tequila, too!
With Roth, it was party and sex music...With Hagar, it turned into a love fest.
Diamond Dave forever. :) |
Like both, but a voice is irreplacable.... It just wasnt right after Roth left...
Definitely Sammy. He's a WAY better singer and helped write much better songs too. Not to mention he's a nice guy. I saw him in concert one time in a fairly small venue and he took a break from playing when they needed to change stuff around or something and taught everyone how to make Cabo Wabo's on stage and then passed some around to the front row :) He's just Cool(tm). Roth is a jerk (but, yes, he's more funny).
I think its a little challenging for me to pick one. Roth-era songs are more just fun rock and roll driven whereas Hagar-era songs do tend to revolve around the love theme. But there were still some kick ass songs from the Hagar period (Poundcake, Top of the World, Humans Being). I'll have to go with Roth, you just can't beat him.
And Roth's solo album "Eat 'em and Smile" kicks ass. "Skyscraper" is ok but isn't that great. |

yup....sign me up for this answer as well. Van Halen died when roth left. Sammy died when he joined van halen. i'm glad sammy is solo again.....time for some more kickass tunes from him. |
VAN HALEN .... i fucking hate van hagar
Van Neither
David Lee Roth gave them charisma. I cant stand hagar. But i did enjoy some songs from him. But not as much as VAN HALEN!
