Is it possible for someone with NO piano experience to learn a difficult piece?
I really like Debussy's Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum and even though I've never learned the piano, I want to memorize this piece.

Sure, as long as you can read the music, it'll just take practice. But you'll only be able to play that one song well.

You don't even need to know how to read music. Find someone who can play the piano, and have them transcribe the music into finger placements. Its almost like Tabs for guitars. Its not really reading music, but if all you want to do is learn something without actually learning, its a good enough place to start.
Besides, back in the day, especially when ragtime was getting popular, none of the black musicians could read music. It was all done my memory, and musical abilities that supassed many others. So yeah, you can memorize a hard piece, but its going to take a lot of time, and patience. |
