Linkin Park...? Korn...?? i love how most of these bands are the ones that get the most airplay, too. i'm sure that has no effect on the list whatsoever.

Maybe we should bombard this post with our own personal Top 20 bands of the past 2 decades eh? :)

Like I said in the greatest guitar players post. It's because Nirvana is a "safe choice" Nirvana is one band everyone can agree on...or everyone doesn't have the heart to not agree on because he's dead. So lord forbid they don't put them #1. I personally like Pearl Jam better but I'm not too vexed at Nirvana being #1 cause I thought they actually were pretty damn good. And you gotta be really good first then die before you get considered the greatest. Ex: Drowning Pool....they just started out....guy died...very sad but they don't get any band nominations.

Nirvana the #1 band?! I wonder if anybody else sees anything wrong with this. I mean, they wrote some good music, but they are FAR from the best band of the past 2 decades. Kurt Cobain wasn't even half as talented as everybody hypes him up to be.

22. R.E.M. A good band, nothing special.
21. Van Halen Talented guitarist, top 22 worthy? No.
20. Limp Bizkit Disgusting, but worthy of the list because they have done a lot for/to modern music.
19. Phish Psshaw!!
18. Alice In Chains Excellent band of the mid 90's. Worthy of the ist.
17. Dave Mathews Band No.
16. Korn Apalling. But again, they are one of the MOST influential bands out there. Look at all the copy cats.
15. Aerosmith Robbed!! Should be top 10!
14. Oasis Good band. Not top 22 material though.
13. The Cure Top 10 for sure.
12. Nine Inch Nails Waaaay robbed. Top 5
11. Smashing Pumpkins Good stuff, top 20.
10. No Doubt I really like Rock Steady, but musically, it is nothing out of the ordinary.
9. Pearl Jam Not sure where to place them.
8. Green Day No arguments here.
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers See #8
6. Linkin Park Someone fetch me a gun.
5. Radiohead I won't complain about this one. Completely unique.
4. U2 Excellent!! I give it #3 slot.
3. Guns & Roses eeeh... good tunes, nothing life altering. Top 50.
2. Metallica Hate the nu-Metallica, but their old stuff was/is awesome.
1. Nirvana No fucking doubts here!! I credit them with giving birth to modern rock music. My favorite band ever. Well deserved.

sorry...van halen should be top 10. they were the next big band after zeppelin who should be on the list.

My honest and I am sure unpopular opinion:

Phish is the best band on this list. Their music is complex and amazing, not easily digested by the masses. They actually have the ability to improvise, something missing from most groups these days. You won't catch these guys playing the same set of three minute songs night after night.

Are you sure this isn't the list of bands with the most air time? Definately not the all time greatest bands list. It's missing way too many great artist.

Oh and by the way... some INCREDIBLE artists got COMPLETELY stiffed here... I think personally that the Smiths could take most of the bands on the list... and if this list was supposed to be about INFLUENCE, where are the Sex Pistols? Dead Kennedys? Bad Brains? Minor Threat? Anything that's even a slight derivative of 'punk' that's on the airwaves today owe their careers in large part to at least one of those bands. A lot of other underground bands influenced music like NO OTHER that aren't on the list. Sunny Day Real Estate gave birth to all of the 'emo' music that's so popular today...

Other bands that I'd (personally) put on the list:
SLAYER (best metal band ever? Probably.)
AT THE DRIVE-IN (Not the most popular band ever, but just listen to their music, it's the most innovative stuff out there, the Mars Volta are following right where they left off. Not to mention ATDI had the best stage show EVER. Trust me.)
BECK (Ok, I'm probably gonna get flamed for this one. But I think he's the best songwriter in the last 20 years, and has produced some of the best music, not to mention most influential on the 'indie' scene)
SNAPCASE (Completely biased opinion on my part, as they're one of my favorites, but I think they have the best lyrics and music of any band out there)
GLASSJAW (See Snapcase's description)
THE WHITE STRIPES (Yes, this is an unpopular opinion, with all the 'they have no talent blah blah blah' bullshit out there, but you have to realize that for one thing they have INCREDIBLE lyrics (all written by Meg, for all those that think she has no talent), and Jack is an OUTSTANDING musician, you really have to be a guitarist and see them live to understand how good he is... singing and soloing at the same time is just about the most difficult thing you can do in music. He makes it look simple)

Music television my ass. Marketing television, now your talkin'. Aside from the Chili Peppers, Radiohead, The Cure, NIN, Guns & Roses, and an honorable mention of Nirvana, Aerosmith, and Phish. I'll file this list under "kids who buy the hype's top 22 picks."

^^ Blame "the fans" cause thats supposedly who chose the list. I don't remember seeing them advertise for it. And don't bad talk Pearl Jam. They're an amazing band and very deserving of the list.
