Ok, you've seen the Rolling Stone top 100 in this forum.
Let's name under rated guitar players!

I'll start with Neil Schon(Journey)

Kenny Wayne Shepard
Prince (or the artist formerly known as)
Robin Trower
Gary Rossington
Joe Walsh
Dan Fogelberg
Help me with these two, I can't believe I can't think of their name's!

This one should start some discussion:

George Harrison.

Everybody gives him credit for being a singer/songwriter/member of The Bealtes, but I think he is under-rated most of the time as a guitar player.

I also think Bruce Kulick is under-rated.

He is generally thought of as the replacement of the replacement of the replacement for Ace Frehley, but he spent 12 years as the lead guitarist for KISS. Not a bad gig, if you ask me.

perripken 09-12-2003 08:14 AM

Thanks G.O.T.- I knew they both shared the same first name!

As for George Harrison, I think he gets credit from people who really know music.

Hey... I know alot of people on this board don't like country music, but you can't leave this guy out (Was he on the RS 100?)

ROY CLARK

perripken 09-12-2003 08:16 AM

Nope, went back and looked-
Roy friggin Clark wasn't even on the list- How the hell can that be?

No one gives Nuno Bettencourt the respect he deserves.

Also, Martin Gore is great, but not really known for the guitar.

Nuno rocks! I'm a huge extreme fan because of his guitar playing-
Help me out with Martin Gore, not sure who he is.

I think Mark Knopfler is in the same catergory as George Harrison. As perripken pointed out,

Martin Gore is the guitarist/songwriter for Depeche Mode. His stuff is simple, but it sounds great.

I forgot this one. Johnny Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls. Awesome songwriter, great rock player.

No friggin way I was gonna say Neil Schon!! He was offered to play with Eric Clapton before he started with Journey, but he turned Clapton down, cuz he wanted to do his own thing. I'll also say Mark Knopfler, and the chick from Heart.:)

spectre 09-13-2003 09:00 AM

Almost forgot: Vernon Reid

Does that mean you don't think Neil is underrated?
Knofler was on the Rolling Stone top 100

Derwood 09-17-2003 04:49 PM

James "Reverend Horton" Heath.

My 2nd favotie behind Gilmour. Completely different genres. Heath just flat out kicks it rockabilly style.

Also the guitarist for Radiohead is fucking unreal.

ElwoodBlues 09-17-2003 07:08 PM

John Petrucci of Dream Theater.

He is so skilled and can play any style of music with style and emotion, yet he is so under appreciated

BulletBob 09-17-2003 07:15 PM

David Gilmour
Hillel Slovak
Dave Navarro
Chet Atkins

John Lennon as a rhythm guitarist and this is felt y no less an authority as John Fogerty of C.C.R. fame. John could really drive that band of his. Not sophisticated or technical, just that gutteral rhythm.

Great pick Ramones. That performance he did was awesome. I saw the video of woodstock on a documentary. The guy who was supposed to play after him didn't show so he had to stall and keep on playing eventually playing Sometimes I feel....Like a motherless child... Shit was great. Very moving he was exausted and sweating too. Wish I was alive then.

Asta!!

Adam Jones of Tool.
His style is a mix somewhere between east indian and hard rock, along with a few other mixtures of his own.

He can seemlessly go from soft and beautiful to a hard and dark style of playing.

A very underated guitarist in my opinion.
